Apple signs $500 million deal with MP Materials for rare earth magnets, eyes US supply chain expansion

Apple has signed a $500 million deal with MP Materials for rare earth magnets, mitigating supply risks after China curbed exports this year and representing a major coup for MP that sent its shares soaring by a fifth.
The backing from one of the world's most valuable companies comes after MP, which operates the only U.S. rare earths mine, last week agreed to a multibillion-dollar deal with the U.S. Department of Defense that will see the Pentagon become its largest shareholder.
The Las Vegas-based company's stock price has nearly doubled since the government deal was announced. It has had remarkable turnaround since last year when it contemplated merging with an Australian rival as profits plunged in what CEO Jim Litinsky called a 'very frustrating' pricing environment for rare earths.
The deal, announced on Tuesday, guarantees Apple a steady flow of rare earth magnets free from China - the world's largest producer.
For Apple, the cost to support U.S. magnet production pales in comparison to the long-term risk that it could lose access entirely to the critical components, analysts said.
"We're in an era where executives are willing to pay a significant premium for a reliable supply chain. They don't want stoppage," said Gracelin Baskaran, director of the critical minerals security program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
China placed export restrictions on rare earths in April in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs. Though the U.S. and China reached a deal in June that has resolved much of the rare earth dispute, broader trade tensions continue to underscore demand for non-Chinese supply.
As part of the agreement, Apple will prepay MP $200 million for a supply of magnets slated to begin in 2027.
The companies did not disclose the length of the deal nor the volumes of magnets to be provided.
The agreement calls for magnets produced from recycled material, in keeping with Apple's long-standing goal of ending its reliance on the mining industry. They will be produced at MP's Fort Worth, Texas, facility using magnets recycled at MP's Mountain Pass, California, mining complex.
"Rare earth materials are essential for making advanced technology, and this partnership will help strengthen the supply of these vital materials here in the United States," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.
Bob O'Donnell, president at market research firm TECHnalysis Research, said Tuesday's move "makes complete sense" given that Apple requires significant amounts of rare earth magnets for its devices.
"Plus, by focusing on a U.S.-based supplier, it does help position Apple more positively in Washington," he said.
Apple, which said the deal is part of its $500 billion four-year investment commitment to the U.S., has faced threats from Trump over iPhones not made in the U.S. But many analysts have said making the iPhone in the U.S. is not possible, given labor costs and the existing smartphone supply chain.
Apple did not disclose which devices in which it will use the magnets. MP said the deal will supply magnets for hundreds of millions of devices, which would constitute a significant share of any of Apple's product lines.
MP produces mined and processed rare earths and has said it expects to start commercial magnet production in its Texas facility by the end of this year.
Last week's deal between MP and the U.S. government includes a price floor for rare earths designed to spur investment in domestic mines and processing plants, which has been lagging partly due to low prices set in China.
The company also has magnet supply deals with General Motors and Germany's Vacuumschmelze.
Rare earths are a group of 17 metals used to make magnets that turn power into motion, including the devices that make cell phones vibrate. They are also used in weapons, electric vehicles and many other electronics.

A tractor tilling a farm is nothing unusual in Punjab. But a tractor tilling a farm on its own, without a driver in saddle to steer it, is surely unusual. This unusual sight was seen Monday as Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) unveiling its Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based auto-steering system for tractors with a live demonstration at its research farm. The tractor in question, with a cultivator attached, moved through the farm creating furrows and raising dust, even navigating the turns and bends with ease, evoking whoops of joy from onlookers. Vice-Chancellor (V-C) of the university, Dr S S Gosal, later termed the live demonstration as a major milestone in 'PAU's transition from conventional farming to digital, precision-based agriculture'. The GNSS-based system, he said, facilitates driver-less movement of the tractor. The computer-controlled system uses signal receivers, sensors and cameras for smooth navigation in precision agriculture and reduces human effort. Gosal said that the 'auto-steering system is a satellite-guided, computer-assisted tool designed to automate steering during tractor operations'. 'By combining signals from multiple satellite constellations with sensors and a touchscreen control console, the system guides tractors along accurate, predefined paths. It ensures consistent steering even in low-light conditions, reducing fatigue, overlap, and missed areas during fieldwork,' Gosal said. Key components of the system include a GNSS receiver for accurate positioning, a wheel angle sensor to track steering movement, and a motorised steering unit. The ISOBUS-compliant console allows for advanced features such as auto headland turns, skip-row functionality, and custom turn patterns. The operator can switch between manual and automatic modes with a single button. 'Field data from PAU trials show the system's strong performance. With manual steering, field implements like disc harrow, cultivator, rotavator, and PAU smart seeder showed overlaps between 3 to 12 per cent. With the auto-steering system, these overlaps dropped to about 1 per cent. Missed areas reduced from 2 to 7 per cent to under 1 per cent. The system maintained an impressive pass-to-pass accuracy of ±3 cm, leading to better resource use and consistent crop establishment,' the PAU said in statement Gosal said that the launch of this system reflects the PAU's decisive push towards digital transformation in agriculture. The university is not just embracing technology for the sake of innovation, but as a necessary shift to keep farming profitable, efficient, and sustainable, he remarked. He pointed out that digital tools like auto-steering not only improve productivity but also lighten the physical burden on farmers. Dr Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Director of Research, PAU, observed that advancements including machine learning, sensor networks, and navigation technologies are essential in view of shrinking natural resources and rising input costs. According to him, scientific and scalable solutions like the auto-steering system are the future of Indian agriculture. Dr Rishi Pal Singh, Registrar of PAU, recalled how the university's innovations recently received national recognition when the Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan operated PAU's sensor-based, remote-controlled paddy transplanter during a demonstration in Patiala. The university also held a live demonstration of the remote paddy transplanter. Dr Manjeet Singh, Dean, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, explaining the university's remote-controlled two-wheel paddy transplanter, said that the machine allows farmers to operate from shaded areas, drastically reducing exposure to heat and humidity during transplantation. He said the technology has shown remarkable results, including up to 12 per cent increase in field capacity, 85 per cent reduction in fatigue, and a 40 per cent drop in labour requirements. Both the driver-less tractor and the remote paddy transplanter may go a long way in cutting down on labour costs too, experts said. The university also informed about its progress in precision irrigation. The Centre for Water Technology and Management is developing (internet of things-) IoT-based irrigation systems that monitor soil moisture, water levels, and weather in real time. These systems automate irrigation scheduling for crops like rice, wheat, maize, and summer moong. Trials in Sangrur have shown improvements in water use efficiency, reduced greenhouse emissions, and lower energy and labour input.

China on Monday said that a senior executive at Wells Fargo, one of the United States (US)' largest banks, has been restricted from leaving the country because of her involvement in a criminal case. The confirmation comes after reports of the same surfaced last week, according to a report in the South China Morning Post (SCMP). 'Mao Chenyue is involved in a criminal case currently being handled by Chinese law enforcement authorities and is subject to the exit restrictions in accordance with the law,' Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, as quoted by the SCMP. The spokesperson did not specify what Mao is alleged to have done, nor which law enforcement agency is handling the case. 'She cannot leave the country for the time being,' Guo added, noting that Mao is required to 'cooperate with the investigation pursuant to Chinese laws', the report added. Guo added that 'no matter whether they are Chinese or foreigners, they should abide by Chinese laws in China'. He also said that her 'lawful rights and interests' would be protected while the investigation is ongoing and framed the situation as 'an individual judicial case'. According to her LinkedIn profile, Mao has been a managing director at Wells Fargo since 2012. Wells Fargo suspends business travel to China Soon after reports of Mao's exit ban surfaced last week, the US-based bank suspended all business travel to the country. "We are closely tracking this situation and working through the appropriate channels so our employee can return to the United States as soon as possible," Wells Fargo told Reuters then. Not an isolated Incident China's use of exit bans can further worsen its relations with the United States. These travel restrictions can prevent individuals—both Chinese citizens and foreigners—from leaving the country if they are involved in legal disputes, ongoing investigations, or sometimes for reasons that are not made public. The US State Department has warned its citizens on multiple occasions to reconsider travel to China. "Exercise increased caution when traveling to Mainland China due to arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including in relation to exit bans," it said in an advisory issued in November 2024. According to the SCMP report, another US citizen—an employee of the US Commerce Department's Patent and Trademark Office—had also been blocked from leaving China a few days ago. The individual has reportedly been stuck in the country for several months, allegedly over national security concerns, the report added.

Taj parent expands partnership with Ambuja Neotia Group for 15 new hotels

Taj Hotels' parent company and the hospitality arm of Tata Group, Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), on Tuesday signed an agreement with the Kolkata-based Ambuja Neotia Group for 15 new hotels. These 15 new sites will be a combination of greenfield, brownfield, and conversion projects, and are spread across the states of West Bengal, Sikkim, and Himachal Pradesh. The projects are expected to be completed in the next three to seven years. This capital-light arrangement will grow the partnership between the groups to over 40 hotels. To be sure, in November, IHCL had acquired a majority stake in the Ambuja Neotia Group's Rajscape Hotels, which manages the Tree of Life Hotels and Resorts brand. The two groups currently operate 24 hotels, with four more—including a Taj Ganga Kutir Resort & Spa in Raichak and a Tree of Life in Sirmaur, Naldehra, and Shivpuri—expected to be operational within the next year. The 15 new properties include a Taj resort in Sunderban, Darjeeling, Shimla, and Rabong, SeleQtions hotels in Kolkata and Siliguri, and a Tree of Life in Lataguri. Of these, four are currently under construction and will be built over the next three years. A few select projects will also feature Taj-branded villas in Darjeeling, Sikkim, Lataguri, and Raichak. "We are present in most of the geographies, but there is an undersupply in the north-east. While we continue to remain strong there, we want to grow to a 25-hotel portfolio in the region and will reach 30 hotels by 2030. We are delighted to extend our partnership with the Ambuja Neotia Group, known for their luxury hospitality developments showcasing the spirit of this region," said Puneet Chhatwal, managing director and chief executive officer at IHCL.
