CRPF canine hero Rolo, who lost her life during anti-Naxal op, awarded DG Commendation Disc posthumously
Rolo, who was part of the CRPF's elite canine squad and trained in infantry patrolling and explosive detection before she joined anti-Naxal ops, had played a crucial role in several missions. The cause of her death was declared as anaphylactic shock after 200 bee stings.
The CRPF Director General has paid tribute to Rolo by awarding her the DG's Commendation Disc posthumously.
New Delhi: The CRPF Friday bid a solemn farewell to sniffer dog Rolo, a member of the 228 Battalion, in Chhattisgarh's Sukma. The two-year-old Belgian Shepherd lost her life after being attacked by a swarm of bees during a major anti-Naxal operation in the Karegutta hills area, located along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border.
Constable Shubham Gajanan of the 228 Battalion, who was also Rolo's handler, told ANI that there is always an emotional connection between canine and handler. Describing what happened, he said Rolo had gone in to search an area that troops couldn't enter, which is when she came in contact with a swarm of bees. She was given first aid but passed away on the way to a medical facility.
He said Rolo had played a significant role in saving troops from IEDs during major operations, and even in the days before her death, did her duty with full alertness.
'When a canine warrior passes away, it feels like a soldier has passed away,' said Gajanan.

Mumbai: A special court on Wednesday convicted former assistant police inspector (API) Suresh Naik (65) in a 2016 corruption case, but sentenced him to the minimum prescribed four years' of rigorous imprisonment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The court observed that Naik committed misconduct as a public servant by breaching integrity and honesty, thereby tarnishing the image of public service, but noting his extensive service as an investigating officer, which led to the successful prosecution of culprits in 58 crimes, the judge awarded the minimum prescribed prison sentence and imposed a Rs 1 lakh fine. Naik was charged under Sections 7 and 13(1)(d) read with Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, which deal with public servants accepting illegal gratification and criminal misconduct, for demanding and accepting bribe from Ramkrishna Kute, then a 50-year-old driver employed with BMC's executive engineer of transport city who was trapped in a corruption case. On March 25, 2016, Kute was arrested after an acquaintance, Surve, misused his name and collected Rs 4 lakh from a chawl resident promising to reduce his water bill. It was alleged that of this amount, Rs 50,000 was handed to Kute. He was later released on bail, with a condition to attend Parksite police station every Thursday and Sunday. On May 5, 2016, Naik, who was the investigating officer in the case, demanded a bribe of Rs 5.3 lakh from Kute to show undue favour in an ongoing investigation and to cancel mandatory police station attendance. Two days later, Kute approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau. A trap was laid near Vikhroli police station and Naik was caught accepting the first instalment of Rs 30,000 from Kute. In a 172-page judgment sentencing Naik, special judge Shashikant Eknathrao Bangar said, "Though the accused served dutifully as a police officer for a long time, his misconduct during the incident in question casts serious doubt." The judge denied Naik's claims of false implication by Kute. Naik was out on bail during pendency of the trial. Public prosecutor Prabhakar J Tarange cited the depositions of nine witnesses, including Kute, to seek Naik's conviction. The Rs 30,000 seized during the trap was ordered to be confiscated to the state.

Long-Distance Runner Varsha Tekam Banned For 3 Years For Evading Dope Test
Indian long-distance runner Varsha Tekam was on Thursday handed a three-year suspension for evading a dope test by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). Varsha, who had finished second in the Pune Half Marathon last year with a time of 1:26.22, was provisionally suspended on May 26. According to the AIU, Varsha was suspended for "evading, refusing or failing to submit to sample collection by an athlete" under Article 2.3. "The AIU has banned Varsha Tekam (India) for 3 years from 20 May 2025 for Evading, Refusing or Failing to Submit to Sample Collection by an Athlete. DQ results from 15 December 2024," the AIU posted on X. The AIU said Varsha returned a signed "Admission of Anti-Doping Rule Violation and Acceptance of Consequences Form," confirming that she admitted to the anti-doping rule violation and accepted the asserted period of ineligibility on Tuesday.
