ChatGPT-5 launch expected soon — here's everything we know so far
According to reports from The Verge and Reuters, the release window is just weeks away (if not days), and it's set to bring major upgrades in reasoning, memory and multimodal abilities.
Here's everything we know so far about ChatGPT-5, including what it can do, how it's different from GPT-4o and what to expect in terms of access and pricing.

That's the question on everyone's mind these days. While OpenAI hasn't confirmed an official launch date, sources close to the company say ChatGPT-5 is expected to debut in August 2025.
That timing lines up with comments from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who recently hinted that 'GPT-5 is coming soon' and teased that it gave him a response so good, he felt 'useless compared to the AI.'
Originally expected earlier this year, GPT-5 was reportedly delayed due to infrastructure constraints and further model tuning. But now, all signs point to a rollout happening within the next few weeks.
ChatGPT-5 is OpenAI's next large language model, designed to unify several capabilities under one system.

Unlike GPT-4o, which combined voice, vision and reasoning in a more modular way, GPT-5 is said to integrate OpenAI's most advanced text and reasoning models, including the o3 series, into a single, smarter assistant.
That means users can expect faster, more accurate responses across longer conversations, with better planning, fewer hallucinations and stronger contextual memory.
Here's what we're expecting from ChatGPT-5:
If OpenAI follows its current subscription structure, ChatGPT-5 will likely be available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise users at launch. That means you'll need to pay at least $20/month for early access.
It's unclear whether free-tier users will get access to GPT-5 at launch or have to wait.
There's also speculation that OpenAI's Pro tier will get the most advanced version of GPT-5, with faster speeds, access to Deep Research and advanced file tools.
For everyday users, ChatGPT-5 could be a major upgrade, particularly if you rely on AI for writing help, idea generation, coding or productivity. If the new model delivers on its promise of better memory, logic and creative output, it could change how we interact with chatbots entirely.
It also arrives at a time when Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude are rapidly improving, making the competition in consumer AI tools fiercer than ever.

Microsoft in talks to maintain access to OpenAI's tech beyond AGI milestone
Microsoft is reportedly in advanced talks with OpenAI for a new agreement that would give it ongoing access to the startup's technology even if OpenAI achieves what it defines as AGI, or advanced general intelligence. If the deal goes through, it would clear a key hurdle in OpenAI's transition toward becoming a fully commercial enterprise. The companies have been negotiating regularly, and they could come to an agreement in a few weeks, Bloomberg reports, citing three anonymous sources. The report cited some of the sources as saying that while the talks have been positive, other roadblocks could emerge in the form of regulatory scrutiny and Elon Musk's lawsuit to block OpenAI's for-profit transition. OpenAI is currently structured as a mission-driven non-profit that oversees a capped for-profit company – a setup that's meant to limit how fully it can commercialize or raise money. That structure hasn't stopped it from raising billions and operating like a traditional tech company, but OpenAI still wants to shake off its constraints. Microsoft, OpenAI's biggest backer with $13.75 billion invested and rights to some of the ChatGPT maker's IP, has put up meaningful roadblocks to OpenAI's future as a for-profit company, with talks dragging on for months. Microsoft wants a bigger stake in the restructured company and seeks to secure its access to OpenAI's tech beyond the current deal, which ends in 2030 or whenever OpenAI says it has achieved AGI — though no one can really agree on what that means. Microsoft has built its Azure OpenAI Service around the smaller company's models, and has integrated the startup's tech into Copilot across Windows, Office, and Github. If OpenAI suddenly declares it has achieved AGI and cuts off access, Microsoft would lose a huge strategic advantage. The ChatGPT maker has reportedly also told its investors that it expects to pay Microsoft a lower share of its revenue as it progresses. A source told Bloomberg that OpenAI also hopes to guarantee that Microsoft deploys OpenAI's technology safely, especially as it nears AGI. Microsoft also stands to gain from OpenAI becoming a for-profit company. The current setup caps investor returns, so a more standard structure would give Microsoft a chance to receive formal equity and significant returns, in addition to access to OpenAI's tech. Bloomberg reports that the two companies have been negotiating an equity stake for Microsoft in the low- to mid-30% range.

VeriSign falls after Buffett's Berkshire sells $1.23 billion stock
By Jonathan Stempel (Reuters) -VeriSign shares fell on Tuesday after Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway sold nearly one-third of its stake in the internet infrastructure and domain name registry company for $1.23 billion. Berkshire had been VeriSign's largest shareholder before selling 4.3 million shares at $285 each on Monday, a 6.9% discount to Monday's closing price. Shares of VeriSign fell more than 7% in early trading on Tuesday. The sale reduced Berkshire's ownership stake in the Reston, Virginia-based company to 9.6% from 14.2%. Another 515,032 shares may be sold to meet demand. Berkshire's remaining holdings are subject to a 365-day lock-up agreement. VeriSign said the sale was intended to reduce Berkshire's stake to below 10%, a threshold that triggers regulatory obligations. Berkshire did not respond to a request for comment. Buffett's company began investing in VeriSign in 2012, and prior to the sale owned nearly 13.3 million shares worth about $4.07 billion. VeriSign shares had risen more than six-fold since Berkshire began buying. Berkshire's smaller investments in technology companies have often been spearheaded by Buffett's portfolio managers, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler. Baird Equity Research analyst Rob Oliver, who rates VeriSign "outperform," wrote that the sale "could drive near-term weakness and questions around Berkshire's ultimate intentions with the stock. We continue to view the story as all about domain growth, which is strong and improving." Berkshire ended March with $347.7 billion of cash, and will update that total when it releases second-quarter results on Saturday. Buffett, 94, has run the Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate since 1965. Berkshire also owns close to 200 businesses including the BNSF railroad and Geico car insurance, and stocks such as Apple and American Express.
