Court issues arrest warrant against Nirmal Lifestyle director, raps Mumbai police for inaction

Hindustan Times2 days ago
Mumbai: A metropolitan magistrate's court in Mulund has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Rajeev Jain, director of Nirmal Lifestyle, a real estate company, for repeatedly ignoring court summons in a cheating case. The court has also held the senior inspector of Mulund police responsible for not executing prior warrants and for not submitting any compliance report. Court issues arrest warrant against Nirmal Lifestyle director, raps Mumbai police for inaction
The court said that despite being issued a bailable warrant on January 28, the accused had not appeared before the court, and no explanation was submitted by the investigating officer. 'Till date, no report is submitted on record. It appears that the investigating officer has not complied with the order passed by this court,' the magistrate said.
The issue stems from a complaint filed by Juliana D'Souza, a senior citizen who booked a flat in a Nirmal Lifestyle project in Kalyan in 2016. According to D'Souza, the project was stalled and 100s of flats were not delivered to their owners. She finally approached the court in 2024 with the help of a Thane-based social activist Melwyn Fernandes. Following her complaint a cheating case was filed against Jain under the Maharashtra Ownership of Flats Act (MOFA), 1963.
Her representative, advocate Sunita Banis, filed a petition on May 14, 2024 accusing Jain of 'deliberate non-compliance' and urged the court to issue a non-bailable warrant against him.
Banis' application emphasised that D'Souza was vulnerable and had suffered 'grave hardship, including homelessness, as a direct consequence of the accused's unlawful acts'.
Banis told the court, 'The accused has repeatedly failed to appear before this Court and seems to have no regard for the law.' She added, 'This is not merely about one flat. It is about the systemic failure to protect senior citizens from being defrauded by powerful developers.'
The court noted that the accused was delaying the matter, that no police report had been submitted, and hence issued a show cause notice, asking the senior inspector to explain himself. The matter is now listed for further hearing on August 14.

J&K: Raids on terrorists' homes in Kishtwar

JAMMU: J&K police carried out Saturday multiple searches at the homes of Pakistan-based terrorists and alleged associates in Jammu's Kishtwar, a day after similar raids in neighbouring Doda. Saturday's searches covered 26 houses, including that of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Mohammad Amin Bhat alias 'Jehangir Saroori', with officials describing the action as part of a larger clampdown on the terror ecosystem in Kishtwar. The terrorists whose homes were targeted have been operating from Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and smuggle arms and ammunition from across the border, the officials said. As part of the clampdown on Friday, raids had rolled in Doda district's Chenab region, directed at the houses of Pakistan-based terrorists across 15 locations. 'The searches in Bhaderwah, Gandoh, Thathri and Kastigarh areas of Doda were aimed at intensifying the crackdown following terror activities in the district from across the border. Many based in Pakistan are helping foreign terrorists by providing them logistics and other support through their contacts here,' an official said. Separately, police have initiated the process of attaching properties of 36 terrorists, who hail from Kishtwar and are based in Pakistan or PoK. They were declared 'proclaimed offenders' in Jan last year, the officials said.

J&K: 2 soldiers killed as 9-day Kashmir gunfight grinds on

SRINAGAR/LUDHIANA: Lance Naik Pritpal Singh, 28, and Sepoy Harminder Singh, 26 — both of Sikh Light Infantry and attached to 19 Rashtriya Rifles — were killed Saturday in an ongoing gunfight with Pakistan-trained terrorists in south Kashmir's Kulgam district as one of the valley's longest counterterrorism operations in recent years stretched into its ninth day. The counteroffensive, codenamed Operation Akhal, began Aug 1 in Akhal Khulsan forest on intelligence of three to five terrorists in the rain-lashed, rugged mountains. Army, paramilitary and J&K police units — backed by drones, helicopters and para commandos — have so far killed at least two terrorists and left about 10 security personnel wounded, according to sources. The deaths took the toll of security personnel killed in operations in J&K this year to 16 — three in Kashmir valley and 13 in Jammu division, including three from Pakistani firing during the standoff following Operation Sindoor. Army's Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said the two soldiers from Punjab 'fell in the line of duty'. 'Indian Army expresses deepest condolences and stands in solidarity with the bereaved families,' it posted on X. Pritpal from Manupur village in Khanna district was married Feb 24 and had returned to duty in April. He joined the Army in 2015 after clearing class 12, continuing a family tradition — two of his uncles served in uniform. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo 'We got a call at 5.30am saying he was wounded, and then another an hour later saying he died fighting terrorists,' said his elder brother Harpreet. His father Harbans said Pritpal last told him two days ago he was fine and would come home on leave at month's end. According to the Army, Pritpal was hit by splinters when a hiding terrorist threw a grenade at him. His body will be flown to Halwara air force station and taken by road to Manupur for cremation with full military honours. Harminder from Mandi Gobindgarh in Fatehgarh Sahib district was the sole breadwinner for his parents and an ailing sister. He joined the Army eight years ago. 'He had told me that he would take care of all the arrangements for my daughter's wedding in Oct. 'Don't worry,' he assured,' said his uncle Harbans Singh, adding the family had planned to arrange Harminder's wedding next. 'They are living in abject poverty. Harminder's father Jaswant is landless and works as a labourer. He was their lone hope.' His body is expected to reach his village Sunday for cremation. J&K CM Omar Abdullah paid tributes at Chinar Corps HQ in Srinagar, while LG Manoj Sinha said: 'Their valour, grit and determination will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with the bereaved families.' Northern Command chief Lt Gen Pratik Sharma and J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat have reviewed the operation on the ground. The seek-and-shoot sweep is part of an intensified crackdown after the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack. Security forces have killed 14 terrorists in Kashmir zone this year, including three top Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives linked to the Pahalgam attack, slain in Srinagar on July 28.
