Passengers who claim they fell ill with severe gastric symptoms after travelling on a 'filthy' cruise ship are taking legal action against P&O Cruises.
The 'growing group' of passengers are suing P&O Cruises' parent company, Carnival UK, following voyages on Ventura in May.
Steve and Lynn Smith, a retired couple from Southport, paid over £2,500 for a two-week birthday break around the Canary Islands and Madeira onboard Ventura.
Two days after boarding the voyage from Southampton on 10 May, Lynn reported vomiting and diarrhoea and was advised to stay in her cabin by the ship's medical centre. Steve suffered similar symptoms with vomiting and a high temperature later on in the cruise.
The couple claim they have not fully recovered from the illness one month on.
Mr Smith said: 'We didn't even get to leave the ship to go on any excursions as we fell ill pretty early into the holiday.
'We weren't the only ones either, and we even saw someone being sick in the restaurant. When I think back, it's no wonder really as the food was served uncovered and seemed to be repeated during different mealtimes. There were also flies on the food, which is really not something I'd expect on a cruise.'
He added: 'Neither of us feel 100 per cent since coming home and we know there's nothing that can change what happened, but we need to know why.'
Jason Howard, 53, and his two sons similarly fell ill during a one-week cruise around Spain and France after boarding Ventura on 24 May.
The family from Worthing say they were also advised to isolate in their room after experiencing diarrhoea, vomiting, bloating, headaches and dizziness.
Mr Howard said: 'Prior to getting on the ship, we were told that boarding was pushed back two hours for enhanced cleaning, but when we got on, our cabin was filthy. There was rubbish and used contact lenses on the floor, the skirting boards were dirty and it was clear the room hadn't been hoovered. I had to complain three times before it was cleaned properly.
'The public toilets on the 15th deck by the main pool were also filthy and we avoided using them altogether.'
The personal trainer added: 'The whole ordeal was awful and I'm still not right to this day. All I want now are some answers; it's the least we deserve.'
According to law firm Irwin Mitchell, recent complaints come after more than 60 passengers reported illness outbreaks onboard the cruise liner in 2024.
Jatinder Paul, a solicitor at Irwin Mitchell specialising in international personal injury cases, said: 'The latest news of illness onboard the Ventura and the symptoms our clients are reporting is a concern. The effects of gastric illness should never be downplayed as, in some cases, it can lead to serious long-term and permanent health complications.
'While nothing can change what our clients have been through, we're determined to provide them with the answers they deserve. It's also vital that if any issues are found in relation to the Ventura, these are resolved immediately to prevent others from suffering similar illness.'

A Royal Caribbean passenger who was injured using a water slide is intending to sue the cruise line, according to his lawyer. The incident took place on board the Icon of the Seas last Thursday, when the man headed down the 'Frightening Bolt'. As he travelled down the slide, an acrylic glass panel on the left side suddenly cracked, creating a hole in its wake. The man's skin was 'sliced through' by the glass, according to his attorney Alex Perez, who told Local10 that the cruise guest was now planning to file a lawsuit in response. At the time of the initial report it was not clear how serious the passenger's injuries were but Royal Caribbean confirmed he received medical care. A video of the incident that was shared on social media showed water gushing from the hole as passengers looked up from below. Jim Muldoon, who caught the moment on camera, is heard asking, 'Did the person fall?' as onlookers rushed to warn anyone else at the top of the slide. Lillian Destefano, who witnessed the nail-biting incident, said she was thankful the situation was not more serious. 'As I understand it, it was cracked,' she told Local10, referring to the slide. 'Like the gentleman that went before him, who just got cut slightly, and then when the other gentleman went down, it sliced him, but he passed it, and then the glass fell and the water gushed. No-one fell through, thank God.' A Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson told the Local10 in a statement Friday: 'Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide.' The cruise line said the water slide was closed for the remainder of the trip, pending an investigation. The cruise travelled to Royal Caribbean's Coco Cay island before returning to Port Miami on Saturday morning. The Independent contacted Royal Caribbean for comment. The Icon of the Seas is among the largest cruise ships in the world, with 20 decks, over 2,800 cabins and space for 7,600 guests and 2,350 crew. It also boasts the largest waterpark at sea with six record-breaking slides, the company says.

MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE, Kenya, Aug 12 (Reuters) - When Ritz-Carlton opens its first safari lodge on Friday in Kenya's Maasai Mara reserve, guests will pay nightly rates starting from $3,500 per person for tented suites with private decks overlooking a river crossed by migrating wildebeest. But the director of a Maasai conservation institute and researchers say the true cost of those sublime views will run much higher by damaging one of the world's most renowned ecosystems. On Tuesday, Meitamei Olol Dapash from the Institute for Maasai Education, Research and Conservation (MERC) filed a lawsuit in a Kenyan court against Ritz-Carlton, its owner Marriott (MAR.O), opens new tab, the project's local developer Lazizi Mara Limited and Kenyan authorities to try to block the scheduled opening. Dapash alleges in the lawsuit that the 20-suite camp, which boasts plunge pools and personalised butler service, obstructs a crucial migration corridor between Maasai Mara and Tanzania's Serengeti. Researchers say migration allows wildebeest to find food and maintain genetic diversity among herds. The lawsuit also says there is no evidence an environmental impact assessment was conducted. Dapash's lawyers asked the Environment and Land Court in Narok to suspend the lodge's opening and hear the case on a priority basis. Marriott, which entered into a franchise agreement with Lazizi, said in a statement it was committed to respecting the environment and that Lazizi had obtained all necessary approvals. Lazizi's managing director, Shivan Patel, said Kenyan authorities conducted an environmental impact assessment, which had established that the site was not a wildlife crossing point. The Narok County government and National Environment Management Authority, which are also named as respondents in the lawsuit, did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment. The dispute is the latest flashpoint in East Africa's grasslands between luxury tourism and Maasai herders who say that the sector's development is harming their habitats and ways of life. In Kenya, local communities have complained about what they say are land grabs by wealthy investors. In Tanzania, protests against the eviction of tens of thousands of Maasai to make way for hunting lodges have led to deadly clashes with police. Dapash, who founded MERC in 1997 as a grassroots network of Maasai leaders, said the Ritz-Carlton's development was the latest in a long list of lucrative tourism projects that government officials have green-lighted at the expense of local wildlife and people. "Without the county government regulating the tourist behaviours, the tourist activities, we saw the habitat, the environment degraded so badly," he told Reuters. County officials have acknowledged that over-tourism has harmed Maasai Mara's natural environment but have said that focusing on "high-value tourism" can help address this by bringing in more money at less environmental cost. Announcing the new Ritz-Carlton in February, Marriott said it would offer a "front-row seat" to the annual Great Migration of millions of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles. The lodge lies along the Sand River, an important water source for animals from elephants to birds, that snakes back-and-forth across the border between Kenya and Tanzania. Hotel staff declined to let Reuters reporters enter the property. Dapash, who is a PhD candidate in sustainability education at Prescott College in the United States and has run unsuccessfully for parliament several times, said the lodge sits on a wildebeest crossing point well-known to locals. Joseph Ogutu, a Kenyan researcher at the University of Hohenheim in Germany who has studied wildlife migration in Maasai Mara, said the new construction would deal a further blow to fauna in the reserve. Many species' populations in the reserve have shrunk by over 80% since the 1970s, according to Kenyan government data. "It is highly ill-advised to build a lodge on one of the most critical paths of the Great Migration," he said. Grant Hopcraft, an ecologist at the University of Glasgow, said the project would "likely have large and long-term ecological implications for the migration". Neither Hopcraft nor Ogutu are party to the lawsuit. Lazizi's Patel said it was the county government that proposed the site to him. And he questioned why Dapash had only started raising objections to the project in recent weeks. "The project has been ongoing for a year," he told Reuters. "We pushed it so hard to ... avoid any disruption, damage to the environment." Dapash said he only learned of the project in May because it is far from the main population centre. The lawsuit questions whether a required environmental impact assessment was ever conducted. Under Kenyan law, the National Environment Management Authority must publish a summary of the assessment in the official gazette indicating where it may be inspected. Reuters could not find any such notice in the official gazette. Patel said he could not share the assessment for confidentiality reasons and referred Reuters to NEMA. NEMA did not respond to requests for comment. The lawsuit also says the project violated a management plan for Maasai Mara adopted by the Narok County government in February 2023, which calls for "no new tourism accommodation developments" before 2032. Patel disputed this, saying the project was built at an "existing" site that had already been in use for many years. He did not say how it had been used. Narok County did not respond to requests for comment. Dapash said the public needed answers. "The preservation of wildlife migration for us is a treasure that we cannot afford to lose," he said. "We need to see that due diligence was done."

Thousands of Britons have been forced to undergo corrective surgery after a faulty knee-replacement implant left them in pain and some addicted to painkillers. Problems started to emerge after US company Zimmer Biomet began using a modified version of its NexGen knee implant in 2012. The implant was widely used in the NHS because it was cheaper, but patients were soon in excruciating pain after the implant moved, leaving the bone to be worn away. Debbie Booker from Southampton had an operation to replace her left knee in 2016. Although the operation was initially seen as a success, she soon began to experience severe pain while on holiday in Majorca a year later. Her implant – which replaced damaged surfaces of the femur and the tibia with artificial components – had slipped from the tibia and was rubbing against the bone. 'I laid a bag of ice on my knee and for four days I had to do that every few hours because I was in agony,' she told BBC's File on 4 Investigates. Ms Booker said she soon became addicted to prescription painkillers, such as fentanyl and morphine, to help with the pain. Even after a second knee replacement, she has been left with health problems. 'Limping and virtually immobile' 'It's put my whole body out of alignment. I walk with a limp,' she said. She is now waiting for a hip replacement. Another patient said she was left virtually immobile after the implants. 'The consultant told me every time I stood up, I was standing on a broken leg. It was absolute agony,' she told the BBC. Knee surgeons said Zimmer Biomet had been too slow to acknowledge problems with the implant and to fix them. The company also refused to pay for secondary surgery for patients. BBC's File on 4 Investigates revealed concerns were first flagged about the implants in 2014 by the National Joint Registry (NJR), which keeps a record of implant surgery across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. But it said there was insufficient data to draw any reliable conclusions. In the decade since, more than 10,000 people have been fitted with the modified implant in the UK. Prof Leela Biant, one of the UK's leading knee surgeons, said Zimmer Biomet failed to act quickly enough after problems were identified. She said she and her colleagues raised issues as far back as 2017. 'The issue is [the company's] initial reluctance to acknowledge a problem and to not really engage with the process to evaluate these patients until [Zimmer Biomet] got to a situation where they had to,' she said. In 2022, the NJR estimated that patients were nearly twice as likely to need corrective surgery after receiving the NexGen implant, when compared with the average knee implant. In the same year, Zimmer Biomet recalled any unused implants from the UK market. The average cost of replacement surgery is between £10,000 and £30,000, with the total bill of fixing the Zimmer Biomet implants expected to run into millions of pounds. A spokesperson for Zimmer Biomet said the company had 'acted appropriately' when new data became available on the implants. '[We acted] in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements,' the spokesperson said.
