Northeast can be national model for sustainable mining: G Kishan Reddy
With its rich biodiversity and deep-rooted community traditions, the Northeast region has the potential to set a 'national benchmark for sustainable and inclusive mining,' Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy has said.
Speaking at the 2nd North East Geology and Mining Ministers' Conclave held in Guwahati on Friday, Reddy said lawful and sustainable mining practices are vital to protect the sensitive ecology of the Northeast region. 'The Central government will provide complete support and technological expertise to enhance real-time monitoring and enforcement at the ground level,' he added.
The two-day conclave, organised by the Ministries of Coal and Mines and the Assam government, is aimed at stepping up mineral and coal exploration in the Northeast states, with an eye on boosting industrial growth, energy security and regional development.
The Union minister released several documents, including Geological Potential on North East and Mining in India's North East, Book on Coal Resources and Exploration in North East Region, and a brochure on commercial coal mining in the North Eastern Region (NER). 'These publications showcase the potential of mineral resources in the NER and the roadmap for their strategic exploration and sustainable development,' said Reddy.
Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma released eight thematic District Resource Maps pertaining to the NER, prepared by the Geological Survey of India, which provide insights on mineral deposits and further exploration activities in the region.
The conclave comes at a time when mineral auctions are gaining pace across India. In FY25, 283 mineral blocks were put up for auction, with 161 awarded so far. The cumulative total now stands at 515 auctioned blocks, including five from Assam and four from Arunachal Pradesh, said the Ministry of Mines in a statement on Thursday.
Reddy emphasised the role of the National Critical Minerals Mission (NCMM) and offshore mining in critical mineral exploration. These reforms are already bringing 'great results' across the mining regions of India, including the Northeast, he said.
'With over 1.78 billion tonnes of coal spread across the 20 coalfields, along with lignite, limestone, natural gas and base metal reserves, the Northeast holds huge strategic economic importance in this region,' he added.
The minister emphasised employment and revenue generation opportunities that the mineral blocks would create. 'For the first time, four critical mineral blocks in Arunachal Pradesh and five major mineral blocks in Assam have been auctioned successfully,' he said. Their operationalisation is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities and revenue for the state governments in the region, he added.
He announced the Mines Ministry will sanction a token amount of Rs 10 crore to each Northeastern state to encourage employment.
The Coal Minister highlighted the government's infrastructure push with the Highways, Internet, Railways and Airport (HIRA) model of development in the Northeast, saying the region is fast emerging as a centre of economic growth and a vital link to Southeast Asian markets.
The government has built 11,000 kilometres of highways, hundreds of mobile towers, extensive new railway lines, doubled the number of airports, developed waterways on the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, and established a 1,600-kilometre-long Northeast gas grid to ensure reliable energy supply for industries, he said.
'With these reforms, the region is emerging as a centre of growth, and fundamental to India's Act East policy,' he added.
Reddy also noted that India's trade with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) currently stands at approximately $125 billion and is projected to exceed $200 billion in the coming years.
'This positions the Northeast as a strategic trade bridge and a gateway to ASEAN markets,' he said.

Demand for MSME stock exchange in UP
Lucknow: Based on its on-ground experience of interaction with UP's diaspora in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh Development Forum — a not-for-profit social organisation working to integrate UP diaspora for development of the state — has urged the Uttar Pradesh govt to establish a dedicated MSME National Stock Exchange in Uttar Pradesh. In a letter to UP MSME minister Rakesh Sachan, UPDF president Pankaj Jaiswal wrote: "While existing stock exchanges such as BSE and NSE offer an SME platform for IPOs, these often operate under the overwhelming shadow of large-cap markets much like a sapling growing under a Banyan tree. We believe that if UP being the national leader in MSMEs takes the bold step of establishing a dedicated MSME Stock Exchange, it would serve as a catalytic financial institution for MSMEs across India." He added UP's exchange could focus exclusively on the unique capital needs of small and medium enterprises. He listed out several advantages of the exchange, such as simplified and fast-track listing procedure; tailored compliance mechanisms; sector-specific investor networks. "The initiative would not only solve capital accessibility issues but also position Uttar Pradesh as the capital state for MSMEs, just as Mumbai is for capital markets," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Co-live Spaces Starting from 42L+ | Whitefield Sumadhura Learn More Undo Sachan, during his interaction with UPDF in Maharashtra on Saturday, gave a presentation on the policy support being provided to MSMEs in Uttar Pradesh and elaborated on the govt's flagship "PLEDGE Scheme". No pre-arrest bail for ex-CEO in city co-op bank scam
Mumbai: A sessions court refused to grant interim relief from arrest to former CEO of the New India Co-operative Bank Ltd, Abhimanyu Bhoan, in the bank scam case. The city's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) had registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust against Percept Ltd founder-director Harinder Pal Singh, New India Co-operative Bank former chairman Hiren Bhanu and his wife Gauri, bank's former CEO Abhimayu Bhoan, Ranjit Bhanu (deceased) and five others for allegedly causing a loss of around Rs 25 crore to the bank between 2014 and 2023. This is the second FIR registered against the Bhanus and Bhoan. In Feb, a case was filed against the Bhanus, Bhoan and seven others after RBI officials found Rs 122 crore cash missing from the cooperative bank. According to the fresh FIR, Bhanu and a few bank officials had sanctioned a loan of Rs 77 crore to Percept Group, a media and entertainment firm. Police claimed that Bhanu, who was then also the director of Hermis group of companies, received nearly Rs 6.4 crore from Percept as kickbacks, which was shown as business dealings with the Percept Group using fake invoices. The police said the fraud took place between Sept 3, 2014 and Oct 19, 2023. The FIR was registered at Dadar police station, and the probe was later taken over by EOW. Rejecting the plea for interim relief, the judge said that the allegation in the earlier FIR is to the extent of receiving Rs 1 crore by Bhoan from the Rs 127 crore allegedly siphoned by co-accused Hitesh Mehta. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 月 *만원대 '실비보험' 최적가 비교가입! Manimajra's 24x7 water supply project hits turbulence; MC internal report, Chandigarh BJP chief flag major flaws
1 2 3 4 Chandigarh: What was once hailed as a flagship initiative under the 'Viksit Bharat' vision is now under intense scrutiny. The ambitious 24x7 water supply pilot project in Manimajra, inaugurated with much fanfare by Union home minister Amit Shah in Aug 2024, has hit turbulent waters. Amid growing concerns and political pressure, Punjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria is set to convene a high-level meeting to dissect the project's faltering progress. The move comes in the wake of a strongly worded letter from Chandigarh BJP president Jatinder Pal Malhotra to the Union home minister, expressing alarm over the project's execution. Sources confirm that the ministry of home affairs has since forwarded the letter to the UT Administrator, prompting urgent administrative attention. The project, spearheaded by Chandigarh Smart City Limited and executed through a Rajasthan-based agency, was envisioned to revolutionize water supply in Manimajra — transitioning from intermittent to round-the-clock pressurized water delivery, complete with smart metering and automated control systems. But the reality on the ground paints a starkly different picture. A confidential internal report by the Engineering Department of the Municipal Corporation has laid bare a series of alarming discrepancies: No zone in Manimajra has achieved 24x7 pressurized water supply; pressure reducing valves (PRVs) and variable frequency drive (VFD) pumping systems remain non-operational; major lapses in the construction of underground reservoirs, pumping stations, and the rollout of the SCADA automation system; and much-touted smart water meters are yet to be fully deployed. The project was awarded through an e-tender at a staggering Rs 165.86 crore, split into capital expenditure (capex) — Rs 74.56 crore — and operational expenditure (OPEX) — Rs 91.29 crore. Despite the scale of investment, the outcomes have been underwhelming — a fact that has not gone unnoticed by local leadership. Malhotra has reportedly warned that the project's failure is damaging the BJP's image and undermining the Prime Minister's development agenda. What's Next? With the spotlight now firmly on the project, the upcoming meeting chaired by Kataria is expected to be a turning point. Malhotra's letter to Shah In a letter to Amit Shah, Chandigarh BJP president Jatinder Pal Malhotra said, "In August 2024, a project was inaugurated by you, in the presence of administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, chief secretary Rajeev Verma, and other dignitaries, for 24-hour water supply with proper pressure for all floors. The funds amounting to Rs 75 crore were allocated for the project under the smart city mission. The reality of this project clearly reflects that the whole project has collapsed, and nobody is held accountable and responsible for this wastage of Rs 75 crore. Sir, on one side, taxes are being imposed on the public, and on the other, Rs 75 crore have been wasted. Certainly, there are policy lapses or a lack of accountability in the system of administration of UT Chandigarh. The media reports are causing grave damage to our reputation in public at large and are also not in tune with our visionary Prime Minister's dream of VIKSIT BHARAT: 2047. Your good self is thus humbly requested to intervene in the matter and call for a detailed inquiry report on the same."
