Stone in 'good situation' to press for Test recall

BBC News27-01-2025
England fast bowler Olly Stone believes he is in the right physical shape to press his case for a Test recall this summer. The 31-year-old was involved in the winter tours to Pakistan and New Zealand after being awarded a central contract, external in October, but did not play. And he is facing competition from the likes of Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson and fit-again duo Mark Wood and Jofra Archer for a place in head coach Brendon McCullum's plans with an Ashes series in Australia just 10 months away."I think everyone knows it's not possible to play every single game of every single series," Stone told BBC Radio Norfolk."With the physical demands of international cricket, there are some people that are freak enough to be able to play all those games, but we know as a unit that we're going to have to rotate."And the fresher people can be, the more chance there is for England to win games - they've always said that if there's a crop of us fast bowlers fit and firing and ready to go to the Ashes down under, especially, it will give us the best chance of hopefully bringing the Ashes home."Stone has taken 17 wickets in five Test appearances but has only come up against Australia in 50-over cricket, with best figures of 4-85 in Melbourne in November 2022.He is currently playing for Dubai Capitals in the International League T20 tournament in Sharjah, as a way of preparing for his return to red-ball cricket with Nottinghamshire in April."I want to play as much cricket as I can. Thankfully at the moment I'm in a good situation and can make the most of this [opportunity], which leads nicely into pre-season in March," said Stone."You're very fortunate now - if you want to, and you're lucky enough to be picked in the competitions, you can literally play all year round. There's three comps going on at the moment - the IL out here, South Africa and the BBL (Big Bash League)."If you don't get picked up in one, hopefully there's another one or two comps you can fall back on and go and get some experience elsewhere. You have to be savvy with which ones you go to and whether they're going to benefit you as a cricketer, and then wait and see if you get picked up."Back in 2021, Stone contemplated abandoning his hopes of playing Test cricket because of persistent back problems. But the Norwich-born former Northamptonshire and Warwickshire pace bowler is relieved to be free of injuries, which have plagued him for much of his career."I'm in a great place. I've got a good amount of cricket under my belt this winter. Obviously I'd have loved to play a bit more on the Test tours I was on, but just to be a part of that is brilliant for me," he added."Hopefully, come October I get another year or two [on a central contract] and can be a part of it for a little bit longer."It's a weird one - even if you don't get your central contract, it doesn't necessarily mean you're not going to be involved. All it takes is a couple of injuries and before you know it your name's back in the mix."It would be nice to get another one, but I wouldn't treat it as the end of the world if it wasn't to happen."

Cyriel Dessers throws open Rangers transfer door with major caveat as Ibrox 'bucket list' revealed

The striker has lifted the lid on his previous contact with Club Brugge amid lingering interest from AEK Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers admits he would be open to a return to Belgium after previously holding talks with Club Brugge. ‌ But the Nigeria international says it is too early to make the move away from Ibrox. ‌ The 30-year-old has been tipped for a move away from Rangers throughout the summer with Greek side AEK interest booted out by Rangers. ‌ And with Hamza Igamane facing a uncertain future amid interest from Lille and Feyenoord, a departure for last season's top scorer would leave Danilo as the only option for Russell Martin up front. And speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Belgium-born Dessers has revealed the Light Blues' Champions League playoff rivals have previously made contact to sign him. The former OH Leuven and Lokeren frontman said: "There were indeed two contacts with Club (Brugge). "Once when (Ivan) Leko was manager there, and the last time when I was playing for Cremonese. But that interest never materialised." Pressed on if he would consider a move back to Belgium - and specifically Club Brugge - Dessers went on: "Why not? "It's still too early anyway, but I've been living abroad for quite a while and I recently bought a house in Mechelen. There are a few Belgian teams I'm particularly fond of." ‌ KV Mechelen was then floated as a potential destination - and Dessers admits the question has been asked by the club previously. "They asked if I could come play for Mechelen. "And I don't think my wife and in-laws would mind either. Although we'll have to see how that works out with my career. "KV Mechelen is a fantastic club. And for the rest, I try to leave as many doors open as possible. You never know what a career will bring." ‌ Dessers goes into the first leg of the £40million Champions League shoot-out as a major injury doubt - and concedes the side are underdogs as he looks to achieve part of his Rangers' dream. He said: "I think it's clear that Club Brugge is the favourite. They're a team that qualified in the Champions League (for the knockout stage) last year – that's quite something. "But I don't think we're an easy team to face either. People sometimes look down on the Scottish league – as if there are only two teams – but it's really not that easy here. "We were also in the quarter-finals of the Europa League last year and, with a bit more luck, could even have reached the semi-finals. Our team is optimistic about this match. We've always been strong in Europe at Ibrox in recent years. "There are three things on my bucket list: to win the championship, to go to a big tournament with Nigeria and play in the Champions League."

Australia's Konstas renews focus in bid to keep Ashes hopes alive

SYDNEY, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Teenager Sam Konstas is looking to bury the memory of his West Indies disappointment and batter down the door to the Australia team for the upcoming Ashes series with a torrent of runs in all formats over the next couple of months. The 19-year-old opener scored 50 runs at an average of 8.33 as Australia swept their hosts 3-0 in the Caribbean in June and July, but Konstas said it was a great learning experience and still thinks he could fill the void left in the test side by the retirement of David Warner. "I feel like every cricketer is going to go through that. You're going to have your ups and downs," he told Sydney's Daily Telegraph. 'One of the Aussie boys was saying even the best players in the world fail 70 per cent and perform 30 per cent of the time. I feel like it's just a great learning to have and I feel like I'll become a better cricketer experiencing that.' After Konstas scored a spectacular 60 against India on debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day last year, his test outings have largely been on the down side of the ledger. He has dumped social media in a bid to remain as focused as possible on resurrecting his fortunes initially in two four-day matches in India with Australia A in September, and then in the Sheffield Shield with New South Wales. "I think the first few games will be big, but for me, it's just trying to nail my process and don't get too fixated about that," Konstas added. 'I'm just trying to be in the present moment and score runs in whatever format I play. If I tick that off, then let the selectors make their choice.' Konstas said he had received plenty of good advice from Australia skipper Pat Cummins on dealing with pressures of playing test cricket and from veteran Steve Smith on the batting side of the game. 'I feel like as long as I prepare as well as possible, I tick all the boxes … and then just let my reactions do the talking. Just try and keep it simple, see ball hit ball,' he said. 'If it's in my zone, be attacking. Hopefully, understanding game situations better. Little things like that. But for me, it's just the way I prepare and the way I want to go about things and just having that clarity and freedom to do what I do.' Australia begin their defence of the Ashes in the first of five tests against England in Perth from November 21 to 25.
