Young scores 24 points, Loyd and Bell switch roles and Aces roll past Wings 106-80
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jackie Young scored 24 points, Jewell Loyd had a strong game off the bench and the Las Vegas Aces beat the Dallas Wings, who rested rookie star Paige Bueckers, 106-80 on Sunday. Loyd came off the bench for the first time in her first season with the Aces to score 20 points, and Kierstan Bell replaced her and scored a career-high 19. The duo combined for seven 3-pointers as Las Vegas hit a season high 15, with five from Young. A'ja Wilson scored 14 points with 10 rebounds and seven assists for Las Vegas (13-13), which snapped a two-game losing skid. NaLyssa Smith scored 11 points. Arike Ogunbowale scored 18 for the Wings (7-19) with Haley Jones adding 15, DiJonai Carrington 14 and Teaira McCowan 12 with 13 rebounds. Young had 14 points on four 3-pointers for the Aces in the first quarter, which ended with the score tied at 27, and the Wings shot 59%. Bell hit a 3-pointer to put the Aces up 39-36 midway through the second quarter and followed with another as Las Vegas surged to a 56-44 halftime lead. It was the 10th 50-point half Dallas allowed and the second straight. Dallas only had 12 turnovers but the Aces turned those into 26 points while the Wings got 10 points off 10 turnovers. Monfils upset in Toronto Masters
Gael Monfils missed squandered four match points in blistering heat before exiting in the first round of the ATP Toronto Masters on Sunday, losing 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/3)to qualifier Tomas Barrios Vera. French showman Monfils had his four winning chances in a pair of third-set service games against the Chilean who won his first match at Masters level while ending a seven-match losing streak dating to late February. The pair both struggled in 35 Celsius summer temperatures, with number 142 Barrios Vera winning after nearly three hours on court. Monfils struck a record 15 double-faults, the most ever recorded by the 38-year-old in a best-of-three match. Barrios Vera moved into a second-round match against American Alex Michelsen. "I don't know how I saved so many match points," the 27-year-old winner said. "It was super-close, super-tight. "I tried to fight for every point, tried to serve well. "This victory is very important for my confidence playing this type of (big) event." Monfils, who also lost in the Canadian first round a year ago, rallied from a set and a break down as he competed for the 14th time in Canada but was unable to get over the line for victory. He broke the Chilean twice in the second set to level the match but came undone in the third. The 2016 and 2019 semi-finalist, struggling with the heat as early as the third game of the afternoon, got back into contention as Barrios Vera double-faulted and lost his second-set momentum. The Frenchman leaned heavily on his racquet between points as he looked to be struggling with his fitness as he tried in vain to close out the win. He ended with 30 winners and 47 unforced errors while Barrios Vera had nearly 60 unforced errors in victory. Elsewhere on opening day Reilly Opelka of the United States defeated Austrian Stefan Ofner 7-6 (8/6), 7-5 while France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard advanced past Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki 6-4, 6-2. Learner Tien beat American compatriot Colton Smith 6-4, 7-5. The Masters field is missing four of the ranking top 10, including No. 1 Jannik Sinner and second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz, both due to various injuries. The event - now controversially expanded to just under a fortnight - began two weeks after the Wimbledon final won by Sinner over Alcaraz. A virus nearly killed him; now, Brett White just shot 59 and won his first Americas title
Make that two 59s in as many days on PGA Tour Americas. This time it led to victory. Brett White began Sunday's final round of the Commissionaires Ottawa Open seven shots behind leader Philip Barbaree Jr., who had carded 13-under 59 a day earlier at Eagle Creek Golf Club. Now it was White's turn to break 60, and while Barbaree closed in 70 to tie for 10th, White rocketed to 23 under, which earned him a spot in a three-man playoff with Danny Fisher and Nathan Franks. White had made 10 birdies on his first 17 holes on Sunday before he drained a 63-foot eagle putt for the third 59 in PGA Tour Americas history. Then in extras, White birdied the par-5 18th hole twice to seal his first career Americas title and jump to third in points. White, 32, is eight years removed from nearly dying from viral encephalitis, which he contracted while a member of PGA Tour Latinoamerica. He spent three weeks in the hospital and had to relearn basic tasks, including talking and walking. His return to golf came about a year after his hospitalization, and he won the 2019 Nevada Open and 2020 Michigan Open as part of his comeback. He got through Korn Ferry Tour Q-School in 2021 to earn his KFT card for 2022, though he notched just two top-25s in 20 starts to lose his status. 'It's been a wild ride,' White told Golf Channel in 2021. 'Over a long journey, sometimes you go back and go, wow, I gotta be thankful for where I'm at. There was a point in the hospital where it was, hey, let's make sure you can be on your own; and then it was, OK, I want to be able to run around with my kids; then it was, let's play golf for fun; and it just kept on progressing. I've tried to get better every day, and I don't think I've stopped.' The top 10 players at the end of the PGA Tour Americas season receive KFT cards.
