‘Param Bir Singh was mastermind of Antilia bomb scare'
MUMBAI: Salil Deshmukh, son of former home minister Anil Deshmukh, has alleged that former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh was the mastermind behind the planting of explosives in a vehicle outside Antilia, the residence of business tycoon Mukesh Ambani, chairperson and managing director of Reliance Industries. Salil also claimed that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) was on the verge of arresting Singh for his alleged involvement but he evaded action with the help of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The case has taken many twists and turns, ever since an SUV containing gelatin sticks was found parked in the vicinity of Antilia in February 2021. It has become a cocktail of political mud-slinging, personal vendetta, and a war of narratives.
Salil's accusation on Monday, made while addressing the media at the headquarters of the Nationalist Congress Party (SP), is the latest development in a saga that has seen his father being jailed over accusations of bribery and money laundering. The Deshmukhs claim they have been targeted because Anil Deshmukh, as home minister in the MVA government in 2021, had transferred Singh in the wake of the Antilia explosives scare.
Now, on Monday, Salil, alleged, 'The person who planned the planting of explosives near Antilia was none other than Param Bir Singh. He was about to be arrested by the NIA for his role, but with help from the BJP, he managed to escape.' He claimed Singh had framed his father as an act of vindictiveness.
'Based on hearsay, the Enforcement Directorate conducted several raids on our residence and took action. They did not hesitate to interrogate even my young daughter, who was six years old at the time. This entire unfortunate incident was a part of 'Operation Lotus',' alleged the 44-year old NCP (SP) leader.
Anil Deshmukh had made similar accusations against Singh in his book titled 'Diary of a Home Minister' released last year. He had alleged that dismissed police officer Sachin Waze was the main player but 'wondered that the mastermind of the entire case was different'.
The Deshmukhs claim Waze is close to Singh, who got him reinstated into the police force on grounds of shortage of manpower during the Covid-19 pandemic. When Singh was police chief, Waze reported directly to him, bypassing senior officers in the hierarchy, they allege.
Param Bir Singh was not available for comment as he did not respond to phone calls and text messages from HT.

BRS pans Bandi's rant against KCR
Lashing out at Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar for his comments against KCR, BRS leaders on Monday stated that the BJP leader speaks 'as if he was born to abuse' their party president. Addressing a press conference alongside Gangula Kamalakar and D Saravan Kumar, former MP B Vinod Kumar criticised Bandi Sanjay's alleged lack of understanding. He accused Sanjay of hiding facts and levelling criticisms against KCR with 'hatred'. Vinod Kumar questioned why Bandi Sanjay was silent on the Congress party, which he claimed had increased the estimated cost of the 'life saving' Chevella project by Rs 40,000 crore before its construction. The BRS leader pointed out that with a BJP government at the Centre and in Maharashtra, and with both Sanjay and G Kishan Reddy serving as Union Ministers, they, along with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, should secure permission for the project at Tummidihatti at 152 metres. 'We are giving him two months time,' Vinod Kumar declared. 'They say that water can be brought from Tummidihatti to Yellampalli through gravity, right? Bandi Sanjay should do that too. If you do these two things, Bandi Sanjay, we will felicitate you. Not only getting the project near Tummidihatti and getting it completed, Revanth Reddy has been saying that he doesn't have any money. Give that money from the centre and also get national status,' he challenged. Vinod Kumar asserted that KCR had meticulously considered all factors and decided on the Kaleshwaram lifting point near Medigadda due to its assured water availability. He credited KCR with achieving Telangana statehood and demonstrating its development. 'Now you build the project near Tummidihatti and show it,' he dared. He recalled that when Mid Manair was damaged, KCR did not blame anyone but repaired it and ensured water supply. He questioned how BJP leaders could claim that granting national status to the Kaleshwaram project would be a disgrace. He further asked why they do not address the damage caused to the Polavaram project, which was built with central funds.

BJP MP slams government for ‘misgovernance'
Gurupura: Accusing the Congress-led Karnataka government of undermining the state's development and ignoring the welfare of the poor, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta said the BJP would not rest until a mass movement is built to remove what he called an 'anti-people' administration from power. Speaking at a dharna protest organised by the BJP in front of the Gurupura Gram Panchayat office on Monday, MP Chowta criticised the state government for 'rampant corruption, maladministration, and centralisation of power.' He claimed the public was already feeling the impact of poor governance and that the state was nearing an 'emergency-like situation' under the Congress. 'The decentralisation of power was a core vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and a key aspect of the Indian Constitution. But this corrupt Congress government has weakened local governance structures from the gram panchayat to municipal corporations,' Chowta said. He alleged that powers earlier held by local bodies, such as issuing uniform land-use maps (9/11 forms), have been transferred to urban development authorities, making it difficult for ordinary citizens to build homes on single plots. He also accused the government of intentionally complicating simple procedures to encourage middlemen and bribe-taking. 'They lured voters with free schemes and guarantees, but are now clawing back hard-earned money from the public using indirect means,' he said. Recalling the BJP government's past achievements, Chowta noted that thousands of houses had been sanctioned for the economically weaker sections through gram panchayats. 'But under the current Congress regime, not even a single house has been handed over to the poor,' he said. He also alleged that the government has begun reducing the number of beneficiaries under social welfare programmes such as Sandhya Suraksha and old-age pension schemes, pushing many elderly citizens into distress. The MP further criticised the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, citing the recent killing of a Hindu activist in Dakshina Kannada district as evidence. 'Loot and corruption have taken over every department, and the state's financial health is worsening under this administration,' he claimed.
