Three of the chefs at the Sept. 22 event are newcomers to the annual competition, which is called the Ottawa edition of Canada's Great Kitchen Party, but in past years was known as Gold Medal Plates. These chefs include Simon Beaudry, the 31-year-old chef at Les Fougères in Chelsea, Simon Laroche, chef at the pasta-focused restaurant Caméline in Gatineau's Hull sector, and Michael Hauschild, the private chef who runs the Kanata-based catering company InHaus Cooking.

Returning competitors are Chef Jason Sawision of Stofa Restaurant on Wellington Street West and Mitch Lacombe of Gitanes on Elgin Street. Sawision came in second at last year's qualifier, and Lacombe finished third.

Last year, chef Lizardo Becerra of Raphael Peruvian Cuisine on Elgin Street prevailed over Sawision, Lacombe and three other Ottawa chefs to win his spot at the national competition, which was held in Ottawa last winter. A B.C. chef won gold, following the grand finale event on Feb. 1 at the Rogers Centre in Ottawa.

Becerra, who recently opened a second, more casual restaurant called Barrio on Rideau Street, is hosting the Sept. 22 qualifying event at Raphael Peruvian Cuisine. All of the event's 80 spots have already been sold.

In 2024 and 2023, the qualifying event was held at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, and at each, six chefs competed during an event that saw guests move from chef's station to chef's station and then eat at high tables.

FTC sues ticket reseller, saying it illegally exceeded purchase limits for Taylor Swift, other shows
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit Monday against a ticket broker, alleging the company used illegal tactics to exceed purchasing limits for popular events and then resold tickets at significantly higher prices. In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Maryland, the FTC said Maryland-based ticket broker Key Investment Group has used thousands of fictitious Ticketmaster accounts and other methods to buy tickets for events, including Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. According to the FTC, Key Investment Group – which does business under brand names like Epic Seats and Totally Tix – purchased at least 379,776 tickets from Ticketmaster between Nov. 1, 2022, and Dec. 30, 2023. The company spent nearly $57 million to buy the tickets and resold them on secondary marketplaces for approximately $64 million. For just one Taylor Swift concert, Key Investment Group allegedly used 49 different accounts to purchase 273 tickets, dramatically exceeding the Eras Tour's 2023 six-ticket purchase limit per event, the FTC said. Fans were so frustrated by the difficulty getting tickets for Swift's tour that the U.S. Senate wound up grilling Ticketmaster in a 2023 hearing. In a statement released Monday, Key Investment Group said it will vigorously defend itself against the FTC's lawsuit. 'The case threatens to dismantle the secondary ticket market for live events, further consolidating power in the hands of the industry's largest monopoly,' the company said. Key Investment Group said the FTC is misapplying the Better Online Ticket Sales Act, a 2016 law which it said was meant to target malicious software, not legitimate resale businesses. Key Investment Group sued the FTC in July to try to prevent the agency from using the law against it, saying it uses human employees — not bots — to buy tickets. But the FTC said that law also prohibits anyone from circumventing security measures and other controls meant to enforce posted ticket limits. In March, with Kid Rock by his side in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing U.S. officials to ensure ticket resellers are complying with Internal Revenue Service rules. The order also directed the FTC to ensure 'price transparency at all stages of the ticket-purchase process' and to 'take enforcement action to prevent unfair, deceptive, and anti-competitive conduct in the secondary ticketing market.'

Crankshaft's visit to Winnipeg, from start to finish
Cranky bus driver Ed Crankshaft and his son-in-law Jeff Murdoch are back at home after a whirlwind trip to Winnipeg. The pair — who have sported Winnipeg Blue Bombers gear in the Crankshaft comic strip for several years — set off in late July on a month-long story arc to visit the Manitoba capital to see a football game. A year after the Ohio-based Crankshaft comic creator and avid Blue Bomber fan Tom Batiuk visited the city, he launched his characters into a month-long road trip to Winnipeg. (Mikaela MacKenzie / Free Press files) The story started July 21 and was published in the Free Press and nearly 500 other newspapers that carry the strip, including the Los Angeles Times, Denver Post, Dallas Morning News and Seattle Times. Ohio-based Crankshaft creator Tom Batiuk first tuned in to the CFL during an NFL lockout in 2011. He took a shine to the Blue and Gold and has followed the team since. He visited Winnipeg last summer to research the city and took in a game at Princess Auto Stadium, as a guest of the Bombers — even running out on the field with the team before the game.
