Golden Jubilee year shines bright for New Mangalore Port with record cargo handling
Mangaluru: In a year that marks its 50th anniversary, the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) has reached a historic milestone—handling 46.01 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo in 2024–25, its highest-ever annual throughput. The achievement, which surpasses last year's record of 45.7 MMT, reflects the Port's growing prominence in India's maritime logistics landscape.
To celebrate the feat, NMPA held its annual "Awards Nite 2024–25" on May 14 at the BDC Auditorium, honouring stakeholders whose collective effort made the milestone possible. From shipping agents and terminal operators to exporters and stevedores, a wide spectrum of contributors was recognised for their role in overcoming challenges such as global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions.
The event was inaugurated by Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta, who praised the Port's resilience and vision in navigating a complex global environment. 'Amid global crises like the Russia–Ukraine war and Red Sea disruptions, NMPA has demonstrated operational excellence,' he said. He also called for the establishment of a Maritime University and skill development centres to prepare the region for its growing logistics role.
Presiding over the event, Dr. Venkata Ramana Akkaraju, Chairman of NMPA, said, 'This historic achievement is the result of tireless teamwork and partnership. Our Golden Jubilee year has become even more meaningful because of this record performance.'
Deputy Chairperson Smt. S. Shanti highlighted how collaborative efforts and operational efficiency helped the Port navigate a volatile global trade environment, while Commissioner of Customs, Mangaluru, Ms. P. Vinitha Sekhar, noted that Customs surpassed all its financial targets this year—crediting NMPA's support and coordination.
Looking ahead, the Port aims to continue enhancing its infrastructure, invest in digital transformation, and deepen its stakeholder engagement—cementing its role as a key maritime hub on India's west coast Chairman said.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta wrote to urban development minister Byrathi Suresh, urging immediate action to prioritise the widening and development of the road between Marakada and Maravoor bridge, which connects Mangalore city to the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA). The main road from Mangaluru city to the airport was already developed into a four-lane road up to Marakada. However, beyond that, the road between Marakada and Maravoor bridge is very narrow, causing significant obstacles to smooth and safe vehicular movement. Additionally, the poor quality of the road is leading to traffic congestion. Since this is a major road for airport travel, passengers are facing various issues due to delays. Therefore, the MP requested urgent action to convert the narrow and deteriorated road between Marakada and Maravoor bridge into a four-lane road to alleviate the difficulties faced by airport passengers and local residents. Once this road is developed, the entire stretch up to MIA will be a four-lane road, reducing travel time from the city to the airport. Further, with the onset of the rainy season, potholes have developed on this road, making travel difficult. "The urban development department should prioritise the construction and concreting of four lanes in this specific area. This is essential not only for reducing traffic congestion but also for supporting economic potential of Mangaluru and its surrounding areas as a commercial hub. Hence, the minister should promptly direct the relevant authorities to initiate both short-term maintenance and long-term development of this crucial road section in Mangaluru," he urged.

Govt Mandates Price Cut on Edible Oils
HighlightsThe Indian government has instructed the edible oil industry to promptly pass on the benefits of a recent Customs duty reduction to retail consumers. On May 31, India reduced the basic Customs duty on imported crude palm oil, sunflower oil, and soybean oil from 20% to 10%, increasing the import duty differential between crude and refined cooking oils. The Solvent Extractors' Association has notified its members to implement the duty reduction benefits, with the impact on retail prices expected to be seen in a couple of weeks. The government has asked the edible oil industry to immediately pass on the benefits of a Customs duty cut to retail consumers. It has also directed the industry to share weekly updates of brand-wise maximum retail price of cooking oils with the Department of Consumer Affairs. India reduced the basic Customs duty on imported crude palm oil, sunflower oil and soyabean oil to 10% from 20% on May 31, which effectively increased the import duty differential between crude and refined cooking oils to 19.25% from 8.75%. In a letter addressed to the Solvent Extractors' Association (SEA), which represents the cooking oil industry, the department said: 'This adjustment aims to address the escalating edible oil prices resulting from the September 2024 duty hike and concurrent increases in international market prices.' The SEA said it has asked its members to pass on the benefits to consumers. 'There are 700,000-800,000 tonnes of cooking oils in the pipeline, which were imported by paying higher duties. The effect of the duty reduction will be seen in retail prices in a couple of weeks,' SEA executive director BV Mehta told ET. ET has seen the government's letter dated June 2. The SEA wrote to its members on June 4. The edible oil industry had been urging the government to increase the duty difference between crude and refined oils to help domestic refiners compete with cheaper imported refined oil. The duty cut 'not only ensures a level playing field for domestic refiners but also contributes to the stabilisation of edible oil prices for Indian consumers.

Lack of coordination between Railways and Smart City delayed twin RuB commissioning: Chowta
Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta told officials of Mangaluru Smart City Ltd. and the Southern Railway to work in coordination to commission the twin Railway Underbridges (RuBs) on Morgan's Gate-Jeppinamogaru Road at Mahakalipadpu in the city. Visiting the worksite with Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyasa Kamath on Wednesday, Capt. Chowta said the delay in completing the project appeared to have been caused by the absence of coordination between the Railways and the MSCL. Even though the Railways pushed the concrete boxes for the RuB, concreting of the underpasses and approach roads could not be completed, he regretted. Meanwhile, Smart City officials blamed untimely rains for the delay in commissioning the RuBs and said that water stagnation in the underpass was hindering the completion of the approach roads. Railways has to lay a pipeline to pump and drain out stagnant water towards the Netravathi, after which the approach roads could be completed, they said. Notwithstanding these claims, the officials promised to open at least one carriageway of the underpass for traffic by July 15. The Hindu had reported on June 2 about the opening of the RuBs, work on which had started in March 2021, getting stalled and thereby forcing people to endure the inconvenience indefinitely. The then MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Mr. Kamath had laid the foundation stone for the twin RuB project under 'deposit' scheme with the MSCL depositing ₹30.7 crore for the RuBs with the Railways, and the MP getting ₹19.87 crore from the MPLAD funds for the construction of the 1.07 km four-lane road. The work did not gain momentum for nearly a year thereafter and picked up only after December 2022, when the Railways closed the Mahakalipadpu Railway Level Crossing to all vehicles, except two-wheelers.
