Vijayapura-Mangaluru Central Special to run as regular service from Sept. 1
The South Western Railway (SWR) on Tuesday announced that the Vijayapura-Mangaluru Central-Vijayapura Express Special will run as a regular service with effect from September 1 from Vijayapura and September 2 from Mangaluru. Train No. 07377/07378 Vijayapura-Mangaluru Central-Vijayapura Express Special will run with revised numbers, Train No. 17377/378 from the dates of regular services, the Zone said in a notification. The services will operate with the existing timings, stoppages, composition and maintenance pattern. The Railway Ministry had on June 27 approved SWR's proposal to regularise the services of the special trains, bringing much relief to patrons who had been demanding regularisation of the services. Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta said that with the regularisation, the long-pending demand from patrons was fulfilled, much to the relief of passengers between the two cities. This move would benefit patients from North Karnataka seeking medical care in Mangaluru, students pursuing education in coastal districts, and regular passengers. The departure timing of the Mangaluru Central-Vijayapura service was revised from 2.35 p.m. to 4.45 p.m. at Mangaluru Central by the Ministry. The special train initially operated between Vijayapura and Mangaluru Junction till November 2019 and was cancelled during the COVID-19 outbreak. The service was restored from December 1, 2021, and extended to Mangaluru Central from April 20, 2024. Passenger associations in Mangaluru, Davanagere, Hubballi, and Vijayapura, the then Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, incumbent Capt. Chowta and Vijayapura MP Ramesh C. Jigajinagi had urged the Ministry to regularise the services.

Capt. Chowta urges MeitY to make Mangaluru a hub for large-scale data centres
Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta has urged the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to consider setting up a Data Centre Special Economic Zone (DCSEZ) in Mangaluru with policy and institutional support to attract private investment. Meeting MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan in New Delhi on Tuesday, the MP discussed the potential of Mangaluru as a hub for hosting large-scale data centres and positioning the city as a key player in India's digital infrastructure growth story. 'Globally, data centres are now recognised as critical infrastructure, essential for everything from AI and cloud computing to financial systems and national security. Mangaluru can be a vital node in India's regionalised data backbone,' Capt. Chowta said. The MP highlighted Mangaluru's strategic advantages—a coastal location with low seismic risk, abundant water resources, and proximity to undersea internet cable routes—making it an ideal location for establishing a Cable Landing Station. Such an infrastructure, he said, would improve internet latency and speed for the region while significantly boosting India's data capacity and security. India AI Mission The MP also requested MeitY's support in bringing initiatives under the India AI Mission to Mangaluru, including the possibility of organising AI Hackathons to identify and nurture local talent. Discussions also covered broader possibilities to develop the city and the surrounding region into a thriving IT and innovation hub, creating jobs, stimulating manufacturing linked to data infrastructure and driving export gains via New Mangalore Port, said a statement. Capt. Chowta said the initiative is part of his ongoing effort to position Mangaluru as a strategic digital and technology hub in line with national goals. 'In line with enabling IT development beyond Bengaluru and building our region as the Silicon Beach, I shared my vision for Mangaluru as a hub for data centres and discussed bringing India AI Mission initiatives to the city, contributing to PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji's vision of a Viksit Bharat. This will also enable and incentivise Mangalureans across the world to come back to Ooru and be a part of the IT wave on our shores,' he noted.

State withholding Ayushman Bharat for Over-70s, says MP
Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta on Monday told the Lok Sabha that Karnataka's refusal to fund its share of the Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana has left senior citizens in the state without free healthcare. Speaking under Rule 377, Chowta said the scheme, launched last year by the Narendra Modi government, provides citizens aged 70 and above with cashless hospital treatment up toRs5 lakh annually. 'The Karnataka government's refusal to contribute 40% of the cost has effectively stalled its rollout in the state, depriving lakhs of elderly people of critical, life-saving care,' he said. In the Mangaluru region alone, Chowta noted, about 80,000 senior citizens are unable to access the benefit. He urged the Union government to act swiftly to protect the health rights of Karnataka's elderly and ensure that the state implements the popular scheme in full.
