Capt. Chowta urges MeitY to make Mangaluru a hub for large-scale data centres

Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta has urged the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to consider setting up a Data Centre Special Economic Zone (DCSEZ) in Mangaluru with policy and institutional support to attract private investment.
Meeting MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan in New Delhi on Tuesday, the MP discussed the potential of Mangaluru as a hub for hosting large-scale data centres and positioning the city as a key player in India's digital infrastructure growth story. 'Globally, data centres are now recognised as critical infrastructure, essential for everything from AI and cloud computing to financial systems and national security. Mangaluru can be a vital node in India's regionalised data backbone,' Capt. Chowta said.
The MP highlighted Mangaluru's strategic advantages—a coastal location with low seismic risk, abundant water resources, and proximity to undersea internet cable routes—making it an ideal location for establishing a Cable Landing Station. Such an infrastructure, he said, would improve internet latency and speed for the region while significantly boosting India's data capacity and security.
India AI Mission
The MP also requested MeitY's support in bringing initiatives under the India AI Mission to Mangaluru, including the possibility of organising AI Hackathons to identify and nurture local talent. Discussions also covered broader possibilities to develop the city and the surrounding region into a thriving IT and innovation hub, creating jobs, stimulating manufacturing linked to data infrastructure and driving export gains via New Mangalore Port, said a statement.
Capt. Chowta said the initiative is part of his ongoing effort to position Mangaluru as a strategic digital and technology hub in line with national goals.
'In line with enabling IT development beyond Bengaluru and building our region as the Silicon Beach, I shared my vision for Mangaluru as a hub for data centres and discussed bringing India AI Mission initiatives to the city, contributing to PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji's vision of a Viksit Bharat. This will also enable and incentivise Mangalureans across the world to come back to Ooru and be a part of the IT wave on our shores,' he noted.

WhatsApp users attention! Stop using WhatsApp web on office laptops immediately due to..., Government issues warning...

WhatsApp has become a fundamental aspect of our everyday lives. It has changed the way we stay in touch with friends, family, and colleagues. It has become one of the most popularly used messaging applications in today's society, allowing users to send text messages, pictures, videos, documents, and make calls, including voice calls and video calls, without delay. The convenience of remaining in touch at any time and anywhere has made WhatsApp a more reliable connection source over traditional means of communication, such as phone calls or emails. How can WhatsApp Web put your personal chats and files at risk? WhatsApp has become an amazing way to maintain interpersonal relationships and share important news updates. However, WhatsApp is no longer limited to personal usage; it is also used for professional work. Employees working in large offices often use WhatsApp Web on their desktops or laptops. Why has the government issued a warning against using WhatsApp Web at work? Recently, the Indian government has issued a stern warning against this. In an advisory issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) this time, the government has asked individuals to refrain from using WhatsApp Web on their computers or laptops while at the workplace, as doing so could expose sensitive information to their employer. Media reports suggest that the advisory warns that using WhatsApp Web may give administrators and IT teams access to personally identifiable chats and private files. This access could take the form of screen-monitoring, malware, or hijacked browser features. The advisory comes as the government's Information Security Awareness (ISEA) team has highlighted the risks associated with using messaging platforms on corporate devices. As a result, many companies now view WhatsApp Web as a potential security threat—a possible entry point for phishing attacks and malware that could compromise entire networks. The ISEA stated that many organizations are now considering WhatsApp Web to be a feasible security risk and a possible entry point for malware and phishing attacks, which could expose their entire network. The advisory warns that using office Wi-Fi may allow companies limited access to an employee's personal phones, exposing private data. Furthermore, the advisory also warned of the 'dangers' of using WhatsApp on company devices, listing risks such as potential data leakage if a laptop is compromised and the risk of interception on unsecured Wi-Fi. What precautions should employees take if they must use WhatsApp at work? What If You Have To Use WhatsApp On An Office Laptop? For employees who have to use WhatsApp Web, the Government recommends: Log out before leaving your desk: Always log out of WhatsApp Web when you walk away from your workspace. Be cautious of links and attachments: Don't click on links or open attachments from contacts you do not know, or do not trust. Follow company rules: Know and follow your organization's policies about using personal apps and devices for work purposes.
