Global ranking for M'luru a pride: MP

Mangaluru: Mangaluru achieved the top position in the list of safest cities in India and was ranked 49th globally, a matter of great joy and pride, said Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta. "This accomplishment not only elevates the status of the coastal region but also enhances Mangaluru's global reputation. In the mid-2025 Safety Index released by Numbeo, the world's largest data collection organisation, Mangaluru was recognised as the safest city in India, topping the list of the country's top 10 safest cities. With a safety index of 74.2, Mangaluru secured the 49th rank among 393 cities worldwide, which is a source of great happiness," said Capt Chowta. "This significant achievement of Mangaluru is not just based on statistics. The cooperation, participation, and civic awareness of all the residents played a major role in shaping Mangaluru into a beautiful and safe city. It is not easy for a city to be recognised as the safest in the entire country due to its infrastructure and civic discipline. This recognition is a testament to the safe and peaceful environment in which the people of Mangaluru live. The accolade received by Mangaluru fills us all with pride and will further encourage the city to progress," the MP said. This global recognition provides an additional reason and opportunity for all successful Mangalureans around the world to consider returning to their roots under the 'Back To Ooru' initiative. It offers a great chance to leverage the vast opportunities and possibilities here. "Mangaluru remains a beloved city for their dreams, ideas, investments, and developmental expectations. This ranking has opened a new direction for the future development and prosperity of Mangaluru, with all Mangaloreans participating in this success and being motivated to elevate the city to greater heights in terms of comprehensive development," he added. MP launches initiative to nurture startups

1 2 Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta on Saturday launched 'Bolpu – A Dawn of Opportunities', a flagship initiative aimed at nurturing startups, empowering budding entrepreneurs, and accelerating early-stage ventures in the region. The initiative is designed to offer a comprehensive support ecosystem, including funding, mentorship, market access, and continuous advisory on govt schemes to help founders build, launch, and scale innovative businesses rooted in local strengths but with national and global potential. Ten promising enterprises will be shortlisted each year. Through eight-week sprints, startups will receive expert guidance to ideate, build, test, and launch. Aligned with PM Narendra Modi's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat by 2047, Capt Chowta said the initiative draws inspiration from his election manifesto task sheet titled 'Nava Yuga Nava Patha', aimed at reigniting the spirit of entrepreneurship in coastal Karnataka. "After returning from the Army, I wanted to contribute to India's transformative journey. Many second-generation entrepreneurs in this region end up in tech jobs in Bengaluru and metros due to lack of support here. Bolpu hopes to change that," he said. The MP stressed that Bolpu will lay special focus on women entrepreneurs and aims to create at least 50 success stories in the next five years. "At a time when Mangaluru is often in the headlines for the wrong reasons, we need to present models of success that reflect our true potential," he said. 92% Mangalureans open to returning home: MP About 92% of Mangalureans working outside the region and around the globe expressed a strong desire to return home and work in the region if suitable opportunities are available, Chowta said, citing findings from the recent 'Come Home Tiger' survey conducted by Rohith Bhat, founder of TiE Mangaluru, as part of the Silicon Beach programme. The survey aimed to gauge interest among professionals from the region who are currently employed outside the region in relocating back to their hometowns. Johnson Tellis, Co-founder and CEO of Inunity, said, "When companies are built and nurtured by the people of Mangaluru, they carry with them a deep-rooted sense of responsibility to give back. The initiative to support at least 10 ideas or ventures every year is not just about startups, but about leadership. Each of those ventures represents a seed of leadership that will shape future cohorts." He said that the focus is on bringing together key entities: ecosystem enablers, thought leaders who reshape business thinking, and the globally spread Mangaluru diaspora.

Debate over renaming Dakshina Kannada district resurfaces

- MANGALURU: The Karnataka Cabinet renamed Bengaluru Rural to Bengaluru North, sparking renewed debate over the nomenclature of Dakshina Kannada district. People's representatives, political party leaders, and various organisations are advocating for the coastal district to be renamed 'Mangaluru'. While the demand for a change of the district's name is widely discussed on social media, an online meeting was also held recently involving leaders from political, religious, and social organisations. Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta told TOI that normally all districts are named after the name of their district headquarters. 'Mangaluru has its own significance when it comes to its historical background. The city is known as Mangaluru because of Goddess Mangalambike. People across the world identify residents of the coastal district as Mangalureans. Hence, calling our district 'Mangaluru' is better,' the MP said. KPCC General Secretary Padmaraj R Poojary said that the coastal city has several names, including Kudla, Kodiala, Maikala, Mangalapuram, and Mangalore. 'Naming Dakshina Kannada as 'Mangaluru' is an ideal suggestion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pensia Pilon 3 NN Pensia Facultativă NN Vezi oferta Undo Since Tulu is widely spoken in the district and the coastal city is also known as Kudla, the district headquarters may be called 'Kudla'. Many who participated in the Google Meet also expressed similar views, and according to me, 'Mangaluru' is an ideal name for the district as globally we are identified as 'Mangalureans',' he said. The seer of Gurupura Vajradehi Mutt, Sri Rajashekarananda Swamiji, said a new name for Dakshina Kannada should reflect the identity of the region since the district has its own cultural history. Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath said that renaming Dakshina Kannada as 'Mangaluru' is a necessity. Extending his support to the demand, he also mooted the idea of the region being known as 'Tulunadu' instead of 'Karavali'. Mangaluru City North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty, former Chairman of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy Dayanand Kattalsar, Tulunada Rakshana Vedike founder President Yogish Shetty Jeppu, and others also support the demand for a change in the name of the coastal district.

MP Chowta pushes to boost recruitment to armed forces from Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru: Against the backdrop of escalating tension between India and Pakistan, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta is taking steps to boost recruitment into the armed forces from the region. In this direction, he recently met with Maj Gen Hari B Pillai, ADG (recruiting - states), HQ Recruiting Zone, Bengaluru, to discuss enhancing military recruitment and exploring the potential of establishing a military station in Dakshina the sidelines of this meeting, Capt Chowta told TOI: "I am working towards making Mangaluru more visible on the defence map. As a first step, I want to provide the Army Recruitment Office with a permanent, accessible space within the city. They are currently operating out of a rented facility in Kulur, which limits visibility and reach."Further, he said that efforts are also underway to bring a T-55 medium tank to Mangaluru. "The tank, which played a significant role in the 1971 Indo-Pak war and was a mainstay of the Indian Army since its induction in 1966, was sanctioned and will soon be placed at a prominent location in the city," he Chowta also said that the proposal for India's first Coast Guard Academy in Mangaluru is in its final stage, awaiting cabinet approval. "Our long-term goal is to create a cultural shift where more youth from Dakshina Kannada consider a career in the armed forces. While Mangalureans are patriotic, the military is not always their first career choice, often due to a lack of awareness or the abundance of other career opportunities here," he noted that while recruitment numbers may be lower than in north India, yet, Dakshina Kannada in the last decade consistently contributed to the defence forces and has a strong ex-servicemen he said that he spoke to the defence minister and is in discussions with private players about setting up a Sainik School in the region on a PPP model. "I also plan to raise awareness about career opportunities in the armed forces by actively involving NCC alumni and current cadets in outreach efforts. A conscious and sustained effort is needed to build awareness and foster a culture of service," Capt Chowta added.
