Dietrich Enns throws 5 scoreless innings in return to majors as Tigers beat A's
Dietrich Enns pitched five scoreless innings in his return to the majors as the Detroit Tigers beat the Athletics 8-0 on Thursday.
Enns (1-0) gave up a single and two walks in his first game since he threw two scoreless innings for the Tampa Bay Rays against the Miami Marlins on Sept. 24, 2021.
The 34-year-old pitched for the Seibu Lions in Japan from 2022-23 before going 13-6 last season for the LG Twins in South Korea.
Jeffrey Springs (5-6) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks in five innings.
Spencer Torkelson and Gleyber Torres homered for the Tigers while Zach McKinstry had three hits, including a double and a triple.
Torkelson, who came into the game hitting .193 with nine homers in his past 54 games, led off the second with his 17th home run of the season.
Jahmai Jones hit a two-run double to put the Tigers up 3-0 in the third.
Torres hit a two-run homer to make it 5-0 in the seventh. McKinstry hit a two-run triple in the eighth and scored on a sacrifice fly.
The Athletics had runners on first and second with no one out in the third, but Enns retired Jacob Wilson on a fly to right and got Brent Rooker to ground into a double play.
The win was the third of Enns' MLB career. The first two came against Detroit on Sept. 11 and 16, 2021.
The Athletics continue their road trip with a weekend series against the New York Yankees. RHP Will Warren (4-4, 4.56) is scheduled to start Friday's opener for the Yankees.
Detroit will have RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-0, 4.58) pitching on Friday in the first of three home games against the Minnesota Twins.

DETROIT (AP) — Dietrich Enns probably won't have to wait another 1,371 days for another chance to pitch in the major leagues. Enns threw five scoreless innings while allowing only one single and two walks in a start for Detroit on Thursday in the Tigers' 8-0 win over the Athletics. It was the 34-year-old left-hander's first big league game since Sept. 24, 2021. 'He's earned the right to pitch again in some capacity,' Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. 'We're looking forward to getting him out there after we get him his normal rest and see if it's going to be in the bullpen. Is he going to be starting, I don't know. But it's going to be in the big leagues.' After pitching the past three years in Japan and Korea, Enns went to spring training this year with the Tigers on a minor league deal. The former Central Michigan University pitcher got called up from Triple-A Toledo for his Detroit debut in the series finale against the Athletics. 'That was always the goal, to get back,' Enns said. 'Use those stops along the way, wherever I was, to hone the craft and get better and try and be as good as I can when I'm at the major league level.' Enns' last big league appearance had been two innings in relief for Tampa Bay against Miami at the end of the 2021 season. 'Dietrich came in and stayed under control and stayed within himself from all the excitement and the return after a thousand days or whatever it's been. Delivered a great performance at a time when we needed it. So hats off to him and everyone around him that helped get him to this moment.' Enns made only his second start in 12 big league games. He has a 3-0 record, the first two wins coming in relief against the Tigers when he was pitching for Tampa Bay in 2021. He pitched in two games, with one start, for Minnesota in 2017. 'Did exactly what he needed to do. ... Stuck to the plan and got a lot of quick outs,' catcher Jake Rogers said. Former MLB star Wander Franco convicted of sexual abuse, avoids jail time
A court in the Dominican Republic on Thursday convicted Tampa Bay Rays infielder Wander Franco of sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl. Franco, 21 at the time and now 24, was sentenced to two years suspended prison time, according to ESPN, which reported that the judge will outline conditions for Franco to meet before the suspended sentence kicks in. He has not played in the majors since allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a minor first circulated online in 2023.
