8-year-old killed in Burke County crash
A child is dead and two others are hurt after a collision in Burke County Sunday evening, police said.
The accident happened on Highway 70 near Sundown Road in Burke County around 6:30 p.m.
The NC State Highway Patrol said a Ford F-150 crossed the centerline and hit a Kia head-on. The crash caused the car to collide with the guardrail and overturn.
The driver of the truck, Benjamin Willis, and the Kia driver, Jacob Ferguson, were transported to the hospital in critical condition, officials said.
Police said the child was in the backseat of the car and died at the scene.
Officials believe impairment played a role in the crash, and charges are pending against Willis.

DPS: Rear-end collision with semi leaves woman dead in Gaines County
GAINES COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- A 31-year-old woman from Artesia, New Mexico, was killed in a two-vehicle crash Saturday evening in Gaines County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. According to official reports, the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, at the intersection of US Highway 62 and County Road 213. Preliminary information from DPS investigators indicates that a 2012 Peterbilt truck, towing a trailer, was traveling eastbound in the left lane of US 62 when it began preparing to turn left onto CR 213. A 2019 Kia Forte, also traveling eastbound behind the truck in the same lane, failed to control its speed and collided with the rear of the trailer, DPS said. The driver of the Kia, identified as Miranda Mariah Greene, 31, of Artesia, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was reportedly wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported for the driver of the Peterbilt, identified as 55-year-old Klass Peters Banman of Seminole. The investigation remains ongoing. No additional details have been released. 37-year-old woman dies from injuries after head-on crash
A woman has died from her injuries after a crash in Logan County last week. The Kia was driven by 37-year-old Ashley Thomas, who was flown to the hospital with serious injuries. She died from those injuries on June 7, according to troopers. The driver of the Tesla was not hurt. Osoro was flown by MedFlight to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for serious injuries. Husband succumbs to injuries after Memorial Day crash that claimed wife's life, police said
PORT ST. LUCIE − A second person has died following a May 26 – Memorial Day − crash involving two vehicles in western Port St. Lucie, according to Port St. Lucie Police. A preliminary investigation found a 2011 BMW convertible driven by John Latowski, 74, of Port St. Lucie, traveled south on Northwest Glades Cut Off Road while a 2023 Kia driven by Cierra Lloyd, 24, of Fort Pierce, traveled west on Northwest Commerce Center Drive. Police about 1:30 p.m. May 26 went to the scene. 'At this time, it appears that the Kia failed to yield the right of way to the BMW, which caused a crash,' police stated. Latowski and his wife, Joan Latowski, 72, who was a passenger in the BMW, were taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce. Joan Latowski died at the hospital, while her husband succumbed to his injuries May 31 at the hospital, according to Port St. Lucie Police. The Latowskis both wore their seatbelts, said Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, police spokesperson.
