Driver arrested after crash injures 3 children at lemonade stand in Burke County
BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A 24-year-old woman has been charged after a crash sent a vehicle off the road and into three young girls who were running a lemonade stand. The accident happened around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, on Conley Road near Arthur Mull Road, just south of Morganton. According to the NC State Highway Patrol, Haley Erin McCorkle, of Hickory, was trying to turn left out of a driveway in a Chevrolet HHR when she pulled into the path of an oncoming Nissan Altima. The impact pushed the Nissan off the road and into a front yard, right where three girls, ages 7, 8, and 9, had set up a lemonade stand for the afternoon. All three were critically injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. Two were airlifted; the third was taken by ambulance. 'I was scared': Family of Morganton girl hit by car, along with two others, recounts the tragic moment None of the drivers involved were hurt in the crash. McCorkle is now facing charges for failure to yield the right of way, causing serious bodily injury. Troopers said there's no indication that speed or impairment played a role in the crash. Family members of the injured girls said the crash happened in an instant. 'I was right there, and it just happened so fast,' said Elizabeth, the sister of one of the girls. 'I just ran and got my mom.' The girls' parents described the scene as terrifying and heartbreaking. One father said he was traumatized after seeing what happened to the children. Despite the pain, the families said they're grateful it wasn't even worse. 'Be more careful, the more mindful that there's kids out of school for the summer and the little things like this, and just try to pay more attention,' said the mother of one of the young girls. 'I can't blame anyone for the accident. Accidents happen. But I was upset about it. I've just had to pray about it.' The road was closed for about two hours while troopers investigated. 8-year-old killed in Burke County crash
A child is dead and two others are hurt after a collision in Burke County Sunday evening, police said. The accident happened on Highway 70 near Sundown Road in Burke County around 6:30 p.m. The NC State Highway Patrol said a Ford F-150 crossed the centerline and hit a Kia head-on. The crash caused the car to collide with the guardrail and overturn. The driver of the truck, Benjamin Willis, and the Kia driver, Jacob Ferguson, were transported to the hospital in critical condition, officials said. Police said the child was in the backseat of the car and died at the scene. Officials believe impairment played a role in the crash, and charges are pending against Willis. Suspect wanted after causing $400k of damages while attempting to steal airplanes from Foothills Regional Airport: Sheriff
MORGANTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Burke County officials are looking for an individual accused of causing thousands of dollars in damages to airplanes at Foothills Regional Airport. On May 26, deputies and NC State Highway Patrol responded to a reported breaking and entering at the airport. Surveillance video captured a white or silver/gray SUV, possibly a Jeep Grand Cherokee, pulling up to the airport around 8:39 p.m. A white man, around 30 to 40 years old, was seen exiting the vehicle. He was seen wearing light-colored pants, a dark shirt, dark boots, a dark baseball cap and carrying a small military-style backpack with MOLLE webbing. Officials say he attempted to steal multiple aircraft out of an airplane hangar. Although he was unsuccessful, the attempt caused an estimated $400,000 in damages to several airplanes, according to the aircraft owners. The investigation remains ongoing. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A crash involving an overturned boat is causing significant traffic delays on I-77 South in Davidson, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The accident, which happened just after 8 a.m. Friday, May 9, is blocking both the left and center lanes. Woman in the ICU after struck by vehicle while leaving concert in Boone
BOONE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A young woman has been hospitalized after she was struck by a vehicle over the weekend while attending a concert in Boone. Mallory Price Mayor, 20, of Waxhaw, was seriously injured Saturday, April 26, after being struck by a Toyota Tacoma, operated by a 22-year-old, while crossing Old US 421 South near Cabbage Row Drive. The NC State Highway Patrol responded just before 10 p.m. to the scene. Highway Patrol confirms with Queen City News that the initial crash investigation did not show impairment or speed as contributing factors. The area was closed for about an hour. 'At the time of the collision, there was heavy pedestrian, as well as vehicular traffic in this area, because of the Thaw Out concert,' Highway Patrol said. NCSHP confirmed no charges will be filed in this accident. According to family and friends, Mallory had been returning home from the concert when the accident occurred. She reportedly suffered a fractured skull, brain bleed, and broken femur and underwent emergency brain surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. She remains in the ICU but is now breathing on her own following femur surgery on April 28. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover medical and living expenses.
