8-year-old killed in Burke County crash

A child is dead and two others are hurt after a collision in Burke County Sunday evening, police said. The accident happened on Highway 70 near Sundown Road in Burke County around 6:30 p.m. The NC State Highway Patrol said a Ford F-150 crossed the centerline and hit a Kia head-on. The crash caused the car to collide with the guardrail and overturn. The driver of the truck, Benjamin Willis, and the Kia driver, Jacob Ferguson, were transported to the hospital in critical condition, officials said. Police said the child was in the backseat of the car and died at the scene. Officials believe impairment played a role in the crash, and charges are pending against Willis. MORGANTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Burke County officials are looking for an individual accused of causing thousands of dollars in damages to airplanes at Foothills Regional Airport. On May 26, deputies and NC State Highway Patrol responded to a reported breaking and entering at the airport. Surveillance video captured a white or silver/gray SUV, possibly a Jeep Grand Cherokee, pulling up to the airport around 8:39 p.m. A white man, around 30 to 40 years old, was seen exiting the vehicle. He was seen wearing light-colored pants, a dark shirt, dark boots, a dark baseball cap and carrying a small military-style backpack with MOLLE webbing. Officials say he attempted to steal multiple aircraft out of an airplane hangar. Although he was unsuccessful, the attempt caused an estimated $400,000 in damages to several airplanes, according to the aircraft owners. The investigation remains ongoing. BOONE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A young woman has been hospitalized after she was struck by a vehicle over the weekend while attending a concert in Boone. Mallory Price Mayor, 20, of Waxhaw, was seriously injured Saturday, April 26, after being struck by a Toyota Tacoma, operated by a 22-year-old, while crossing Old US 421 South near Cabbage Row Drive. The NC State Highway Patrol responded just before 10 p.m. to the scene. Highway Patrol confirms with Queen City News that the initial crash investigation did not show impairment or speed as contributing factors. The area was closed for about an hour. 'At the time of the collision, there was heavy pedestrian, as well as vehicular traffic in this area, because of the Thaw Out concert,' Highway Patrol said. NCSHP confirmed no charges will be filed in this accident. According to family and friends, Mallory had been returning home from the concert when the accident occurred. She reportedly suffered a fractured skull, brain bleed, and broken femur and underwent emergency brain surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. She remains in the ICU but is now breathing on her own following femur surgery on April 28. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover medical and living expenses. STATESVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man has died after colliding with a tree in Statesville, troopers say. Around 5 p.m. Saturday, NC State Highway Patrol responded to a crash in Iredell County on I-40 West near Old Mountain Road (Exit 144). Officials say, a 2005 Volvo S60 was traveling west on the highway when the driver, 28-year-old Ramon Gustavo Navo-Almanza of Claremont, lost control and drove off the left side of the road. When he veered back onto the roadway before going off the right side of the road and striking a tree. Man arrested after barricading himself inside Gastonia home: Police Navo-Almanza died at the scene. Officials say he was not wearing a seatbelt. The initial investigation indicates that excessive speed contributed to the crash. During the on-scene investigation, I-40 was partially closed for around two hours.
