Vadodara: They risked their lives during
Operation Sindoor
, ventured deep into enemy territory, and defended the borders when Pakistan attacked. This Rakshabandhan, the soldiers of the
Indian armed forces
received an outpouring of gratitude — 65,000 rakhis sent from women across India and 16 other countries.
The initiative is led by Vadodara-based retired teacher Sanjay Bachav, who has been sending rakhis to troops on the border for the past 10 years. Some of these rakhis, he said, will be tied on the wrists of soldiers who took part in Operation Sindoor.
"Sisters tie rakhi on the wrists of brothers who promise to protect them. Our armed forces saved our lives and protected us in the truest sense. Sending them rakhis is a small gesture of appreciation," Bachav told TOI.
The idea struck him a decade ago when he realised that while festivals are celebrated at home in comfort, soldiers spend them guarding the borders. In 2015, he roped in his students to help pack 2,500 rakhis and courier them to army posts. Word of the initiative soon spread, and women from across India and even abroad began sending him rakhis, which he carefully packed and forwarded to the troops.
"The aim was also to instil patriotism and respect for the armed forces among students. We began sending letters along with the rakhis, and some soldiers replied, thanking us for the gesture," he said.
This year, women from 16 countries contributed, helping the count reach 65,000 rakhis — the highest yet.

OJEE publishes 1st round merit list for medical, dental courses

Bhubaneswar: Authorities of the Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE), which is conducting counselling for MBBS/BDS seats from the state quota, has published the first round merit list for 1,813 seats. A total of 1,720 students are included in the merit list, official sources said. OJEE chairman D P Satapathy on Sunday said the candidates included in the merit list need to take admission by Aug 24. "Verification of the candidates will be conducted on Aug 25 and 26," he added. "Some medical seats reserved under the NRI and ST quotas are vacant. These seats may be filled in the second, third or vacancy rounds. Some seats from the state quota will also get vacated after a few students take admission under the all-India quota," said Satapathy. He said Odisha offers 1,659 MBBS and 154 BDS seats under the state quota. OJEE conducts counselling for 12 govt and 3 private medical colleges and 2 dental colleges, including a private one. This year, 50 MBBS seats were reduced from a private medical college. "Out of a total of 1,863 MBBS and BDS seats, 1,813 will be allocated for candidates under the state quota," he added. Out of the total MBBS and BDS seats, 15% are reserved for the all-India quota. The remaining seats will be left for state quota admission. With 3 teachers for 3 students, this K'pada school is staring at closure

1 2 Kendrapada: In most schools, the teacher-student ratio is often a cause of concern. But the 91-year-old govt primary school at Badahat village in the district has three teachers teaching just three students. While two students study in Class III, the third is in Class II. But this was not always the case. Earlier, it had a healthy number of students, but enrolment declined steadily over the years as many parents began sending their children to English-medium schools that have come up in the district. Sayed Mohammad Khalid, one of the teachers, said, "Last month, I joined the school and it felt very strange because there are only three students. The rest of the children from the village and nearby areas study in private schools. We have highly qualified teachers. Efforts are being made to encourage parents to enrol their children in the school. We are expecting positive outcomes." Besides Khalid, Priyambada Sundarray and Susanta Kumar Sahoo are the other two teachers. "We have been visiting homes in the village to convince parents to send their children to the govt school. All the facilities are available in this govt primary school. But villagers consider it better to send their children to private English-medium schools," rued Sahoo. A few years back, around 30-40 children used to study in the school, but now only three children come to school. District education officer (DEO) Pabitra Mohan Barik said following govt guidelines, the school will be closed. "It will be merged with another school soon for better use of resources, efficiency, and education upgrade," Barik said. Asked about the criteria to determine merger of schools, Barik said the strength has to be less than 20 students. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
