SOG arrests two for extorting doctor, land broker
Surat: Surat Special Operations Group (SOG) police arrested two notorious extortionists from the Rander area on Wednesday in connection with separate cases involving a doctor and a land broker. Both accused were produced in court, which remanded Bachav to one-day police custody and Gaudil to two-day custody. In the first case, Dr Mohammad Zakir Meman of Bhatena lodged a complaint with Athwalines police against Imtiyaz Sadam Bachav and Sarfaraz Multani. Meman had purchased land in Kosamba through the two accused as mediators, but they allegedly withheld payment to the landowner, leading to a dispute. On July 17, while Meman and his wife were riding near Quality Restaurant in Athwalines, the accused allegedly stopped them, threatened to cancel the deal, and extorted Rs 50,000 at knifepoint. They also demanded more money, threatening to kill him if he failed to pay. In the second case, Lalgate police booked Sahid Shabbir Gaudil after land broker Tosif Pathan alleged that in March, Gaudil stopped him near a perfume shop in Lalgate and demanded a 50% cut in brokerage on any deal he closed. When Pathan refused, Gaudil allegedly held a knife to his neck and demanded Rs 1 lakh. Pathan handed over Rs 15,000 on the spot and promised the rest later under threat. Acting on the complaints, SOG tracked down and arrested Gaudil and Bachav from their homes in Rander. As the accused were taken away, locals celebrated by showering flowers on the police and bursting firecrackers.. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). From sisters worldwide, Op Sindoor heroes recieve 65k rakhis
Vadodara: They risked their lives during Operation Sindoor , ventured deep into enemy territory, and defended the borders when Pakistan attacked. This Rakshabandhan, the soldiers of the Indian armed forces received an outpouring of gratitude — 65,000 rakhis sent from women across India and 16 other countries. The initiative is led by Vadodara-based retired teacher Sanjay Bachav, who has been sending rakhis to troops on the border for the past 10 years. Some of these rakhis, he said, will be tied on the wrists of soldiers who took part in Operation Sindoor. "Sisters tie rakhi on the wrists of brothers who promise to protect them. Our armed forces saved our lives and protected us in the truest sense. Sending them rakhis is a small gesture of appreciation," Bachav told TOI. The idea struck him a decade ago when he realised that while festivals are celebrated at home in comfort, soldiers spend them guarding the borders. In 2015, he roped in his students to help pack 2,500 rakhis and courier them to army posts. Word of the initiative soon spread, and women from across India and even abroad began sending him rakhis, which he carefully packed and forwarded to the troops. "The aim was also to instil patriotism and respect for the armed forces among students. We began sending letters along with the rakhis, and some soldiers replied, thanking us for the gesture," he said. This year, women from 16 countries contributed, helping the count reach 65,000 rakhis — the highest yet. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
