Watch: Chicago Sky's Angel Reese smacks clipboard out of coach's hands

UPI09-07-2025
July 9 (UPI) -- Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese took out her frustration by smacking a clipboard out of the hands of one of her coaches during a loss to the Washington Mystics, but later said the incident is "not happening again."
The incident occurred with about 30 seconds remaining in the game Tuesday in Washington, D.C. The Sky and the Mystics were tied at 77 before the Mystics received two free throws.
Reese, who was visibly frustrated with a foul call, walked toward the Sky bench. Vice president of basketball operations and strength and condition coach Ann Crosby went to meet Reese in the area and attempted to hand her a clipboard.
Reese used her left arm to smack the clipboard out of her hands, sending it flying toward the court.
Those **** were pissing me off shoutout to Ann because she know it was the heat of the moment and she didn't let me apologize because she knew! Not happening again tho‍♀️ https://t.co/SCqLJIPoQ6— Angel Reese (@Reese10Angel) July 8, 2025
Reese, who hosts a podcast called Unapologetically Angel, later wrote on X that Crosby "didn't let" her apologize for the incident because she knew she was frustrated.
"Those [expletives] were pissing me off," Reese wrote on the social media platform. "Shoutout to Ann because she know it was the heat of the moment and she didn't let me apologize because she knew! Not happening again tho."
Reese scored a game-high 22 points and collected 15 rebounds, four assists and a steal. She also totaled five fouls and three turnovers in the 81-79 setback.
The All-Star forward, who leads the league in rebounding, tied the score with two free throws with 14 seconds remaining. But Sky center Elizabeth Williams went for a block and was whistled for a foul on Mystics forward Shakira Austin on the next possession. Austin made both of her free throw attempts with 2.8 seconds remaining.
Sky guard Rachel Banham missed a deep 3-pointer off the backboard at the final buzzer.
The Sky outshot the Mystics 45% to 42.3%, including a 31.6% to 26.7% edge from 3-point range. The Skt made 25 free throws, compared to the Mystics' 31.
Reese, who has been among several WNBA stars to criticize officials in recent weeks, is among the league leaders in personal fouls (60). She trails only Ariel Atkins and Kiki Iriafen, who picked up 63 apiece so far this season.
She picked up 119 during her rookie campaign, which was tied for the third-most in the league and trailed only Aliyah Boston (130) and Kahleah Copper (121).
"We just have to be better," Reese said, when asked about Williams' late foul call. "We can't let it go down to one possession. Refs make calls that they know are not right and they'll look back and know that wasn't the right call."
Williams, who fouled out, totaled 20 points and seven rebounds in 30:07 of action. Austin led the Mystics with 15 points. She also recorded eight rebounds and five assists.
The Sky (5-13) lost three of their last four games, including their last two, and sit in 12th place in the WNBA standings. They have the second-worst record in the WNBA after the Connecticut Sun (2-16).
The Sky will host the Dallas Wings (6-14) at 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday in Chicago.

Magic rookie Jase Richardson hit the gym with Desmond Bane, others

Orlando Magic guard Jase Richardson was spotted in the gym in photos posted by the team on social media in preparation for his upcoming rookie campaign. Richardson was seen working out alongside Desmond Bane, Jonathan Isaac and Tyus Jones at the AdventHealth Training Center. Several players have been in and out of the practice facility throughout the summer, with Richardson among the latest to get in some work. The offseason period is a great chance for incoming rookies to hit the court with their new teammates to build chemistry. After playing with a few roster players in summer league, Richardson had the opportunity to get on the court with some of the veterans. Richardson was named to the All-Big Ten third team last season at Michigan State, averaging 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists on 41.2% shooting from 3-point range as a freshman. He ranked ninth in the country in box plus-minus (plus-11.6) and 14th in offensive rating (132). The 19-year-old debuted with the Magic in the NBA Summer League, averaging 16.5 points, 2.5 assists, 1.5 rebounds and one block on 55.6% shooting from the field in two appearances. He produced 19 points and four assists in his last game on July 13. Richardson projects to check a lot of boxes for the Magic and was a player they were even looking at with the 16th pick before trading it away. He faces an uphill battle vying for rotational minutes, but he appeared to pass the test in his first action this summer.

Commanders activate Terry McLaurin off the PUP list as contract extension talks linger

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Commanders activated Terry McLaurin off the physically unable to perform list on Saturday amid lingering contract extension talks with the All-Pro wide receiver. McLaurin, who is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.2 million contract signed in 2022, reported to the team on July 27 after skipping the initial four days of training camp and June's mandatory minicamp. That turned a holdout to a hold-in but has not necessarily accelerated extension talks or returned McLaurin to practice. The team placed its top target on the PUP list with an ankle injury, and McLaurin requested a trade on July 31. McLaurin and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels fueled an offense that ranked fifth in points scored last season and carried the Commanders to a 12-5 regular-season record and the franchise's first NFC championship game appearance since 1991. They haven't built off that success in camp with the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the New York Giants approaching. Three other offensive starters have missed significant time with injuries. The activation comes one day after offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury expressed a desire to work with a full lineup. 'We need to start getting those guys, when they're available out there,' Kingsbury said. ___

‘Different': Kevin Durant on Alperen Sengun's elite play for Turkey

Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun were both Western Conference All-Stars last season, and they're now teammates in Houston. This week, Durant is watching his co-star shine in European play. As they gear up for the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket 2025 competition, Turkey lost Friday's preparation match versus Germany by two points. It was part of the DBB SuperCup and effectively a road game for the Turkish squad, since the game was played in Munich. But that narrow defeat certainly wasn't the fault of Alperen Sengun, an NBA All-Star center with the Houston Rockets. In under 32 minutes played, Sengun led the way with 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists while making 8-of-11 shots (72.7%) and 7-of-9 free throws (77.8%). That total included a number of highlight moves, most notably a crossover spin from the perimeter that led to a running dunk. It's not a move that is seen frequently from big men, but Sengun isn't a normal big man. One person who noticed was new Rockets teammate Kevin Durant, a future Hall of Famer and former Most Valuable Player (MVP). Responding to a clip of the move, Durant simply summed it up with one word. 'Different.' Durant was responding to an X user who asked if any other big men were able to move as fluidly in space. The list is quite small, and it's a unique skill set that Durant will try to help Sengun maximize once training camp opens for the 2025-26 Rockets next month.
