Humphrey Ker 'astonished' by interest shown in Wrexham

Leader Live24-04-2025

Humphrey Ker, has become a familiar figure at the club - thanks in part to the Welcome to Wrexham documentary in which he featured.
He has been working alongside Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds since the celebrity duo took over as co-chairmen of the club in 2021.
The documentary they all featured in, couple with back-to-back promotions, has helped put Wrexham, both as a club and as a community, on the world map.
New fans have come in from all over the world including Brazil, Canada, Iceland and more.
And yet, during an interview on BBC News this week, Humphrey revealed that the level of interest shown by the club's American fans still 'astonishes' him to this day.

Rarely will you go to the STok Cae Ras these days without hearing an American accent or two as people travel over from the States to see what Wrexham has to offer.
Talking to the BBC about the impact of Rob and Ryan and the documentary, Humphrey said: "What they (Rob and Ryan) are very aware of is, how much hard work has gone into this. From the outside, people think 'oh you know Wrexham have got money and that's all you need to be successful'.
"But, it's not just as simple as spending money. Phil Parkinson, our manager deserves an unbelievable amount of credit.
"It's extraordinary, what we've been able to do with the documentary and the football club is tell people in America why football is so significant to us. But, I'm astonished by the level of interest.
"America is fascinated by English football and we (Wrexham) are a way in for a lot of people who don't follow it in other ways."
Wrexham could well clinch a historic third consecutive promotion this weekend - something no ever team has ever done in the English Football League.
A win over Charlton Athletic on Saturday (April 26), coupled with dropped points by Wycombe Wanderers, would seal promotion to the EFL Championship.
Looking ahead to that, Humphrey said: "If results go the right way for us then, yeah there will be a bit of a party, which is quite bad for me because I'm running a marathon the next day."
Humphrey will be taking on the Manchester Marathon in aid of the Wrexham Miners Rescue Project on Sunday (April 27).
To get the fundraising ball rolling for Ker, Wrexham AFC co-chairmen Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds pledged £26,200 each to the fund.
By now, the fundraiser has collected just over £85,000.

Grinning Littler and Humphries had walked out to Vindaloo, sparking a chorus of boos from the German crowd. The golden boys spurned FIVE darts to take a 3-2 lead but the German pair Ricardo Pietreczko and Martin Schindler took out 286 in six darts to go in front. England's pair never seemed to recover from that setback. The Germans were roared on by the home crowd and ripped the Three Lions pair apart to hit five legs on the bounce to open up a 7-2 lead - and just one away from glory. Qualifier Tatjana Maria shocks Madison Keys to reach final at Queen's

The 37-year-old mother of two arrived in London on a nine-match losing run but, after coming through qualifying, she is now unbeaten in six contests and will take on American Amanda Anisimova for the trophy on Sunday. Maria's latest victim was American second seed Keys, who was unable to cope with the German's unusual, slice-heavy game, falling to a 6-3 7-6 (3) defeat. From qualifying to the final. Three straight Top 20 wins. The Oldest ever @WTA 500 finalist!!! Take a bow, Tatjana Maria 👏#HSBCChampionships — HSBC Championships (@QueensTennis) June 14, 2025 After sealing the victory, Maria celebrated with her husband and coach Charles-Edouard and elder daughter Charlotte courtside, while younger daughter Cecilia slept in a pushchair. Saturday's win followed a quarter-final victory over former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, and Maria, a semi-finalist at the All England Club in 2022, told the BBC: 'Really, to be honest, I cannot believe it's true. 'It's such a special place. I could not wish a better tournament to be in the final and I'm so, so proud. I had my ups and downs but you always have to keep going. I love to play tennis, I love the sport. We live for these special moments.' Now the world number 86 – the oldest player to make a WTA 500 singles final – will take on eighth seed Anisimova, who prevailed in a topsy-turvy battle against top seed Zheng Qinwen, winning 6-2 4-6 6-4. Anisimova faltered having three times led by a break of serve in the second set, with both players finding the windy conditions difficult. The turning point came after Olympic champion Zheng had recovered from another poor start to a set to lead 3-2 in the decider. The Chinese star had three chances to make it four games in a row but Anisimova withstood the pressure and broke serve in the next game on her way to a first grass-court final. 'I'm so happy to be through this match,' said the 23-year-old. 'I've never gotten a win over her. 'Every time we've played we've had some really tough battles and I was just really relieved at the end there. The conditions were very tricky but we still managed to play some really good tennis.' On facing Maria, Anisimova added: 'I'm super happy to see her in the final. It's incredible what she's doing and her family is so cute. It's really special for her and it's going to be a great final.' Meanwhile, there was a career-best victory in qualifying for the men's event next week for Britain's former Wimbledon junior champion Henry Searle. The 19-year-old claimed a 7-6 (0) 7-6 (6) win over top seed Bu Yunchaokete and will take on American Mackenzie McDonald for a place in the main draw.
