PENAMPANG: The launch of SME Corp Malaysia's new office and the Sabah Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Hub on Saturday marked a significant step forward in the Federal Government's efforts to empower local entrepreneurs, particularly in Sabah. Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said the initiative was inspired by his vision to provide accessible facilities and advisory services for the business community in Sabah. 'This hub serves as a one-stop centre for business owners to obtain guidance and information on government entrepreneurship programmes,' he said during the launch at Donggongon Square, here. In 2024 alone, 10,035 entrepreneurs visited SME Corp's physical hubs, with 2,607 visits recorded in the first quarter of this year. Ewon also announced the continuation of the Bumiputera Enterprise Enhancement Programme (BEEP) Plus in 2025, following its positive reception in Sabah and Sarawak. 'I'm pleased with the outcomes of this programme, which aligns with the 'Look East Within the Country' initiative and is tailored specifically to support micro-enterprises in East Malaysia,' he said. As part of the initiative, 15 local entrepreneurs received a total of RM841,099.97 in grants. SME Corp Malaysia Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Bernard Giluk Dompok said the launch was a major milestone under Ewon's leadership in boosting Malaysia's entrepreneurial ecosystem. 'The opening of this hub not only brings the Minister's vision to life but also demonstrates Kuskop's commitment to expanding access to business support,' he said. He also thanked industry players and strategic partners for their continued support in developing the MSME sector. SME Corp CEO Rizal Dato' Nainy said the MSMEs form the backbone of the Malaysian economy, comprising 96.9 per cent of all business establishments. 'This year, we're focusing on digitalisation and global competitiveness. We aim for over 90 per cent of enterprises to digitalise operations by the end of 2025,' he said, adding an MoU with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) will further support financing, digital tools and training. He encouraged local entrepreneurs to fully use the facilities at the Hub and participate in national-level events like SME Venture @ Asean 2025, scheduled for October in Kuala Lumpur. Ewon urged members of the local business community to be proactive in seeking out information on government assistance, funding opportunities and market access. Malaysia aims to expand cocoa cultivation to 10,000 hectares by 2030
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) has set a target to expand Malaysia's cocoa cultivation area to 10,000 hectares by 2030. This initiative aims to meet rising demand for high-quality Malaysian cocoa, up from the current 5,985 hectares. Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin highlighted the Cocoa Cultivation Promotion Programme as a key strategy. The programme, led by KPK and the Malaysian Cocoa Board, focuses on boosting cultivation through the plantation sector. Chan also announced an upcoming engagement programme in Tawau to promote cocoa farming in Sabah. He shared this during a Dewan Rakyat session in response to a question from Datuk Lo Su Fui (GRS-Tawau). Recent data shows dried cocoa bean prices surged by 141 per cent to RM24,274 per metric tonne in 2024. This marks a significant rise from RM10,073 in 2023, reflecting growing market demand. When asked about cocoa-based products, Chan emphasised KPK's focus on branding premium local cocoa. The ministry promotes single-origin and fine-flavoured cocoa to attract global chocolate makers. KPK also provides tailored support to farmers, including fertilisers and pest control measures. These efforts aim to enhance soil fertility and reduce crop losses from pests and diseases. The expansion plan aligns with Malaysia's goal to strengthen its position in the global cocoa market. Farmers will benefit from targeted assistance to sustain and grow their cocoa cultivation. The initiative underscores Malaysia's commitment to high-quality cocoa production and agricultural sustainability. Photo: Facebook SHAH ALAM - Bayan Baru Member of Parliament (MP) Sim Tze Tzin has warmly welcomed the Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz into Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), lauding his track record as an effective technocratic Minister with both corporate and global experience. In a statement posted on X, Sim described Tengku Zafrul as a capable leader with the right values and breadth of experience to strengthen the party. Recalling their first meeting, Sim said that he first knew Tengku Zafrul when he was still the CIMB Bank Chief Executive Officer (CEO). 'It was 2020 in a Hari Raya Open House. He sat beside me and we had a very engaging and intellectual conversation on economy and investment. A discussion that left a lasting impression on me. 'He has proven to be an effective technocratic Minister, navigating complex financial challenges during Covid pandemic,' he said, praising Tengku Zafrul's leadership during his tenure as Finance Minister in 2020. 'I can confirm that I applied to join the party and I informed the secretary-general on the matter,' he told Malaysian media at the Malaysia Pavilion in World Expo 2025 on Friday. Asked if his application had been accepted, Tengku Zafrul replied: 'Yes,' adding that it was approved following the party's leadership council meeting about two weeks ago. In May, Tengku Zafrul resigned as an Umno supreme council member, Kota Raja division chief and as a party member, after earlier stepping down as Selangor Umno treasurer in April last year. He had also informed PKR President and Prime Minister Anwar of his intention to join PKR. His move came shortly after PKR figures Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad resigned as Ministers, following their losses in the party's internal elections. Speculation about Tengku Zafrul's defection from Umno to PKR had been ongoing since late last year.
