Romantic drama 'Saiyaara' earns Rs 83 crore at the box office
Helmed by Mohit Suri of "Ek Villain" and "Aashiqui 2" fame, the movie is produced by Yash Raj Films.
The film also marked the highest opening day release ever for a debutant-led film as well as the highest for a love story. Pandey is actor Ananya Pandey's cousin.
The film's impressive three-day run at the box office has beat lifetime collection of other debuts of star kids like Alia Bhatt's "Student of the Year" and Jahnvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khattar's "Dhadak", which earned Rs 70 crore and Rs 73 crore (lifetime).
"Saiyaara" follows Krish, played by Pandey, a fiery, ambitious musician, and Vaani, played by Padda, a shy lyricist recovering from heartbreak. The chemistry of the lead pair, built through soulful songwriting sessions and raw emotional moments, is the heart of the film, reads the official logline."Saiyaara" opened with Rs 21 crore, earned Rs 25 crore on day two and as per trade tracking website Sacnilk's early estimates, it has made Rs 37 crore on day three.It is also Suri's highest opening among his other films -- "Ek Villain" earned Rs 16 crore on day one, "Aashiqui 2" made over Rs 6 crore and "Murder 2" earned almost 7 crore on the first day of their release.
The film is among the highest grossing opening weekend alongside films like Vicky Kaushal's "Chhava" (Rs 122.43 crore), Salman Khan's "Sikandar" (Rs 90.25 crore) and Akshay Kumar's ensemble comedy "Housefull 5" (Rs 91.83 crore). The music of "Saiyaara", which features seven songs composed by Mithoon, Sachet-Parampara, Tanishk Bagchi, Rishabh Kant, Vishal Mishra, Faheem Abdullah and Arslan Nisami, is already a chartbuster.
Alongside Pandey and Padda, the romance also stars Geeta Agarwal, Rajesh Kumar, Varun Badola and Shaad Randhawa in key roles.

First is Ajay Devgn's return as Jassi in the film Son of Sardaar 2, which is a sequel to his 2012 hit. The second film is Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi's Dhadak 2. The film is a spiritual sequel to Dhadak (2018) which star Ishaan Khatter and marks Janhvi Kapoor's debut film. The film was a remake of the Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal (2018). Originally slated for release on July 25, Son of Sardaar 2 was pushed to August 1. Looks like these two films will face a big challenge at the box office with Saiyaara's continuing its strong run, and also Mahavatar Narsimha's growing numbers. South actor Vijay Deverakonda's Kingdom, which was recently released in theatres too has earned well on its first day. And looks like this latest release too can be a threat the films. Dhadak 2's production house, Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, is going the Kesari 2 way with this film. It's releasing only in 1000 screens across India, focusing on the urban centres, with more screens expected to add in case the word of mouth is in their favour. In order to attract footfalls, both the new releases — Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2 — are offering 50% discounts on ticket prices using certain coupon codes.

Bollywood director was targeted by gangsters, received training from CID, had to quit films and flee the country to protect himself
Director Rajiv Rai, known for his 1997 film Gupt starring Kajol and Bobby Deol, and Mohra starring Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon, faced several threats from gangsters and even an attack at his office when Bollywood was facing a lot of heat from the underworld. He relocated to the UK and has now returned to India. In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, the director recalled the horrific time in the 90s. He also revealed that the police had asked him to not engage with the underworld calls. They also advised Rai to take training from the CID for precautionary purposes. During the conversation, Rajiv shared, 'The problem happened after Gupt. After that one, I gave two films that weren't upto the mark. So, that was also very troubling for me. I got a call on my landline the next day. Nobody asked for money. I didn't say anything, I never came on call, we never talked. I right away called the police and they asked me to not talk.' He added, 'We had recorders in the office, everything was recorded and sent to the police. I must have said hello on the first call, main samajh gaya yeh galat hai. I spoke for four seconds, then I pretended that I am someone else. I feel that the number of calls I used to get at that time, maksad toh paisa hi hoga (they must want money).' Recalling the attempt of attack at his office in 1997, he was relieved that his bodyguards protected him that day. 'Mere upar attack hua, maine kaam chorra tha (I was attacked after I left work). It happened in my office, I don't talk about it much. They came with guns and bullets. Agar mere aage aate toh main abhi hota hi nahi. I was inside, but my bodyguards were there. Vo bhaage toh darr gaye. It's complicated, chaar neeche, chaar upar, inka mission confusion mein hi kharaab hojaata hai (Lack of planning and confusion spoiled their mission). 90% of the time, the police used to tell me that they misfire professionally,' he said. I thought that agar mujhe goli lagg gayi, toh kaun dhyaan rakhega (My father was unwell, who would have taken care of him)? My son wasn't well, he was autistic and I had to educate him. There were so many threats. So, I had multiple reasons. I thought that I should call it a day, God has given me a little bit of money.' Moreover, the director revealed that he went on to make more money after moving away. 'And, when I didn't work for 20 years, I actually made money through my old films. I made more money, jitna maine unn dino mein nahi banaaya jab main kaam karaha tha (I made less money when I was working). Legally fight has to be you come to my office, we don't even have Rs 5K in cash. Rakhte hi nahi the log.' After receiving the threatening calls, the police advised him to undergo training from the Crime Investigation Department. 'I used to keep visiting after every three months to check on my father. I went to several countries, mujhe police ne bola tha kabhi bolna nahi (police advised that I should never reveal this). When this attack happened, I had to take training,' Rajiv shared. 'So, I used to go to CID for training. Jab phone aaye toh mujhe bola gaya ki training lo. They used to teach kaise gaadi badalni hai, always look over your kuch (When I got the threatening call, I was asked to train. They taught me how to change the car, look over my shoulder… a lot). I had a police permission to cut the red lights, because at that time, they can shoot you when your car stops,' he concluded.

Saiyaara actor was Rs 2 crore in debt, relied on family's support during bankruptcy: ‘Didn't have enough money for survival'
Actor Rajesh Kumar has been a part of landmark series on both television (Sarabhai vs Sarabhai) and the web (Kota Factory). He can now add theatrical films to the list, having played a supporting role in the blockbuster romantic drama Saiyaara. Starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, the film is directed by Mohit Suri. It debuted in July to mostly positive reviews, but shocked everybody with its box office performance. The movie recently crossed the Rs 400 crore milestone worldwide, and will probably pass the Rs 500 crore mark this weekend. Rajesh Kumar is basking in the film's success, heralding it as a much-needed return to the limelight. In an interview with Meri Saheli, he spoke about the film's success, and his recent personal difficulties. Rajesh took to farming some years ago, and was hit with the harsh realities of the business. He went bankrupt, and at one point, had only Rs 2500 in his account and was Rs 2 crore in debt. He said, 'Bankruptcy, yes. The incoming and outgoing flow had gone for a toss. There was no incoming, and I had exhausted all my reserves because of the outgoing. I went under debt of Rs 2 crore. (Bankruptcy) is a big word, but definitely, I had that feeling with me for a long time. I was not able to generate money for survival also. This was definitely a phase.' Rajesh said that he wants to dispel the myth that farming is only undertaken by people who have no other options. He said that nobody these days dreams of becoming a farmer when they grow up, and he wants to change this mindset. He said that he relied on his family's support when he wasn't making any money himself. Rajesh quit acting and took up farming in 2019, but he was immediately struck by a series of setbacks. First, the weather turned against him, and then, he had to contend with a pandemic. 'Financially, I was on a slide. By the lockdown, I had used up my savings, and was literally bankrupt. I didn't have anything in my pocket. I had huge loans, and that was adding to the pressure,' he told Rajshri Unplugged. Things became so bad financially, Rajesh took up a role in a film called Binny and Family but couldn't afford to buy his kids simple gifts. 'I had just Rs 2,500 in my bank account when I was in the UK. I traveled back and forth twice during that 24-day shoot, but I couldn't bring back even two chocolates for my kids,' he said in an interview with Dainik Bhaskar. In an older interview with Galatta India, he said that farming made him a better actor. 'Farming helped me become a better actor. Now, whenever my role demands emotions, I simply remember my farming days and tear up.' He laughed as he said, 'I don't have to visualise as an actor that my parents died or a friend died, I simply remember: 'Arey yaar, khet mein aag lag gaya tha uss din (The farm caught fire the other day)',' he said.
