Charlie Brooker reveals hidden Black Mirror references you missed in season 7
The anthology show, which started life on Channel 4 in 2011 before moving to Netflix in 2016, is now on its seventh run – and if Brooker has his way, it'll be on air for another 14 years.
Speaking to The Independent about the Easter eggs featured in each episode, Brooker instructed viewers to hit 'pause' regularly as 'there's little details hidden in the captions', sarcastically adding: 'They're little jokes and gags to keep things light in such a fun and breezy watch.'
Brooker also set a challenge for viewers: 'I should say, in all these episodes, there's one Easter egg prop that's in every single episode – the same thing. I'm not gonna tell you what it is.'
Below, Brooker and his co-producer Jessica Rhoades have run through all the references to look out for in every new episode.
Episode one: 'Common People'
'There's the Juniper lodge,' Brooker said, in reference to the hotel Amanda (Rashida Jones) and Mike (Chris O'Dowd) stay at on their anniversary. This is a reference to the Emmy-winning season three episode 'San Junipero'.
While dining on their anniversary, the song 'Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)' by Irma Thomas can be heard being performed in the background. This song has recurred throughout Black Mirror, first appearing as early as season one episode '15 Million Merits', where it's sung by Jessica Brown Findlay's Abi.
It also featured in season six episode 'Joan is Evil'.
Series two episode 'The Waldo Moment' is also referenced in the scenes showing Mike's hurting himself for money on website Dum Dummies. One user is called I_AM_Waldo, a nod to the cartoon character-turned-politician
A few scenes also reference future episodes – namely season seven's second instalment 'Bête Noire', which is set in a confectionary company named Ditta. When adverts are added to Amanda's plan, she starts reciting adverts for the company.
Another scene references season seven's third episode 'Hotel Reverie', which is named after a fictional 1940s classic film that exists in the Black Mirror universe. The film is playing in a cinema that the couple walk past.
Producer Jessica Rhoades added: 'I think Rashida is a little Easter egg in herself 'cause she was involved in 'Nosedive'.' Season three episode 'Nosedive' was co-written by Jones and Michael Schur.
Episode Two: 'Bête Noire'
'There's a literal Easter egg in the lobby – a 'White Bear' Easter egg – but whether you actually see it, I'm not sure,' Brooker said. 'White Bear' was the second season's second episode, which aired all the way back in 2013.
The reference might have stemmed from the fact that the school Maria (Siena Kelly) and Verity (Rosy McEwan) went to – Colworth Manor High – is based in the town where they filmed the episode.
Barnie's Chicken – which becomes a point of contention among the episode's characters – is where Alex Lawther's character in season three episode 'Shut Up and Dance' worked.
The most memorable scene in the episode shows Verity (and then Maria) glugging organic almond milk, whose brand is raiman – Raiman is the name of the main character in 'Men Against Fire', another season three episode.
Of course, the episode being set in Ditta is a reference to the previous episode – and it is situated opposite Tuckersoft, which is the maker of the game that was the source of the interactive episode 'Bandersnatch'. Tuckersoft references recur throughout season seven.
Episode Three: 'Hotel Reverie'
When actor Brandy Friday (Issa Rae) is researching film star Dorothy Chambers (Emma Corrin), she goes on YouTube and watches videos uploaded by Pia (Myha'la) and Davis (Samuel Blenkin) – the two podcast makers from season six episode 'Loch Henry'.
Videos on the sidebar also reference another season six episode – 'Demon 79'.
'We also have a Space Fleet shirt in the control room,' Brooker said, referencing the online game featured in 'USS Callister'. The shirt is worn by a technician played by Ted Lasso 's Charlie Hiscock.
The Nubbin used to transport Brandy into Hotel Reverie is similar to the tech used in season one classic 'The Entire History of You', while Radio Times highlighted two blink-and-you'll-miss-it details: that Dorothy previously starred in starred in St Juniper and My Kingdom for a Pig, which is surely a reference to Rory Kinnear's prime minister in the show's very first episode, 'The National Anthem'.
The former is a 'San Junipero' reference – and it's not the only one: Brandy lives in Juniper Drive. The fictional actor's version of Hotel Reverie is also made available on Streamberry, the fictional streaming service first introduced in season six instalment 'Joan is Awful'.
Episode four: 'Plaything'
'Obviously the biggest one is Colin Ritman and Mo Thakur, who return from 'Bandersnatch',' Brooker said. These are the characters played by Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry, who cameo in the episode.
Poulter's Ritman is revealed to be a fan of Waldo, the controversial animated political candidate featured in season two episode 'The Waldo Moment'.
Rhoades points out that 'all the posters' in the video game company Tuckersoft headquarters – itself a reference to 'Bandersnatch' – are references to past episodes, including season five's 'Striking Vipers'.
Episode five: 'Eulogy'
'Eulogy has fewer Easter eggs, but there is the odd little thing,' Brooker said, pointing out that the aforementioned prop used in every episode is easiest to spot in this moving Paul Giamatti instalment.
Episode six: 'USS Callister'
'USS Callister' episode within itself is an Easter egg,' Brooker said, with Rhoades chiming in: 'And there's a human Easter egg – a character from 'Demon 79' pops up in the space battle.'
Brooker also pointed out that 'the character of Pixie they meet is listening to the song by Ashley O', the pop star character played by Miley Cyrus in season five's 'Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too'.
The end of the episode features a bunch of references, with the show's creator stating: 'If you watch the news ticker at the very end, there's a bunch of Easter eggs in there.'
He's not lying – the headlines read as follows:
Hotel Reverie reboot hits Streamberry – an obvious 'Hotel Reverie' and 'Joan is Awful' reference
Thronglets 2 launches to critical acclaim – a 'Plaything' reference
Former UK PM Michael Callow enters Celebrity Vet School – a brilliant 'National Anthem' reference
'Mysterious Talisman' found in plane wreckage – a 'Demon 79' reference

Killer, 34, murdered and dismembered student, 19, on first date after ‘watching Netflix series showing mutilation'

Teen Sade then went back to Anderson's apartment where, at one point in the night, the alleged killer put on Netflix show Love, Death & Robots. One episode of the series called "The Drowned Giant" portrays the horrific mutilation of a human body on the beach. In a chilling similarity, prosecutors have claimed that monster Anderson dismembered Sade's body on a beach in Wisconsin overlooking Lake Michigan. Juror Melissa Blascoe told the Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel: "I was like [...] that's disgusting because that could have been where he got some of his ideas or fantasies. "I physically felt like I was gonna throw up at that point. I know a lot of people were shaking and crying." Anderson was also charged with arson and hiding a corpse in connection with Sade's death. He was found guilty on all counts. Cops said it's believed Anderson spread the 19-year-old's remains across Milwaukee County and burned her car in an attempt to hide key evidence. Surveillance footage showed Sade's car leaving Anderson's apartment in the early hours of April 2. Eerie new video shows 'killer' dad Travis Decker as cops fear 'expert' soldier won't be caught for MONTHS after murders It then arrived at the beach along the shores of Lake Michigan. When Sade didn't turn up for work the next day, concern was sparked on her whereabouts. The student's manager Justin Romano told CNN that she was "very outgoing, she would talk to everybody here." He added: "She was always there to lighten the mood." After Sade hadn't showed up for her shift - which "wasn't like her at all" - Justin added: "We kind of knew something was up. "We had been calling her all day." Anderson is thought to have dismembered Sade and set her car alight behind an abandoned building. He then took a bus back to is apartment. 10 Maxwell Anderson, right, with his defense attorney Anthony Cotton, left Credit: AP 10 The booking photo of Maxwell Anderson is seen as part of state exhibit in the trial of Anderson, center Credit: AP 10 A photo of the studio apartment of Sade Robinson was presented as part of the state's exhibit in the trial of Maxwell Anderson Credit: AP 10 Sade's grieving mom Sheena Scarbrough Credit: WISN 12 ABC Despite "extreme fire damage" to Sade's car, cops where able to identify the outfit the 19-year-old had been wearing on the night of the date alongside part of an iPhone consistent with hers, CNN reports. Cops had been called to Warnimont Park after a human leg was horrifically discovered, which was later identified as belonging to Sade. Anderson had planned to kill the student weeks before her death, a "confidential informant" claimed, Fox News reports. Anderson's attorney Tony Cotton argued that the prosecution showed no evidence of his intention to kill Sade. The attorney also raised how Anderson didn't try to hide his identity as he travelled on public transport home and was also in clean clothes despite having allegedly dismembered Sade's body in a muddy location. Jurors reached their verdict in one hour on the ninth day of trial. Milwaukee County Assistant District Attorney Ian Vance-Curzan said: "While we are satisfied with this verdict, our hearts go out to the family of Sade Robinson." And Milwaukee County Sheriff's Det. JoAnn Donner - who had spent months working on the heartbreaking case - said: "My heart goes out to the family and [Sade's] friends and really, the community at large. "It's everyone's come together, and it's really hard to take that step back as a law enforcement officer and not get that really emotionally involved during the case. "I will admit that I did go back to my office after the verdict, and I had a good cry because I finally got to have that emotion. It does affect us too." And Sade's grieving mom Sheena Scarbrough said in a GoFundMe set up for her daughter's memorial service that she was a "loving daughter, a cherished sister, and a dear friend to many". Anderson is to be sentenced on August 15, where he faces a mandatory life sentence in prison. 10 Prosecutor Ian Vance-Curzan holds up a jacket that had DNA in sections of the jacket from Maxwell Anderson and Sade Robinson while questioning state witness Sharon Polakowski Credit: AP 10 Sharon Polakowski, forensic scientist, senior DNA Analysis Unit from the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory Milwaukee, testifies for the state on DNA found on clothing of Maxwell Anderson Credit: AP

The film follows the story of Stella, Auggie, and Chuck, who visit a haunted house and find a book of horror stories written by a long-deceased author named Sarah Bellows. Bellows' stories soon come to life, and the scary monsters and creatures they contain emerge in the real world, putting Stella, Auggie, and Chuck in more danger than they realise. Joining the cast of the 2019 film were Breaking Bad star Dean Norris, who played Hank Schrader, and Orange is the New Black actress Lorraine Toussaint, who played Yvonne in the Netflix series. The books upon which the film is based were released in 1981, 1984, and 1991 and were published shortly before author Schwartz's death at the age of just 64. Unlikely UK TV star admits love of WWE ahead of tonight's Money in the Bank show
The wrestling brand has gained millions of new fans since its move to Netflix - including national treasure Stephen Fry who went to this year's WrestleMania with his husband Elliott Spencer Since WWE signed their multi-billion pound deal with Netflix, more British viewers have been watching wrestling than ever before. But potentially joining other fans in settling down to watch tonight's Money in the Bank, which sees John Cena take the next high profile step on his retirement tour as well as setting the agenda for the next few months of high-flying action, is an unlikely national treasure. High-brow star Stephen Fry explained he too has started watching WWE in an interview released this week. Chatting with Rylan on the BBC podcast How to Be in Love, Fry made rare comments about his life with his husband, comedian Elliott Spencer. The couple have an age gap of 30 years with Fry candidly saying that the difference meant he had been introduced to things he might not have experienced otherwise. Speaking of his husband, Fry said: "So much of what I love in music and literature and so on is not necessarily from this century. He teaches me things I just didn't know. He introduced me to Kendrick Lamar, which was a great thing to do because Kendrick Lamar, I've decided, is a great poetical spirit. "He also has a great affection for – and I guess you could call it ironic, but it's real – WWE. And I just don't know if I can reveal this extraordinary truth, but I bought a couple of tickets to WrestleMania in Las Vegas." Who knows if the famous pair will be settling down to watch tonight, but either way tonight's event, as the first Money in the Bank shown on Netflix, will have the biggest ever audience for the annual institution. The show starts at midnight in the UK and is the latest premium live event that Netflix subscribers, whether direct or who watch for free as part of their Sky TV bundles - can see without actually paying an extra penny. No matter what the final results are tonight, British fans can have a ringside seat on the drama that unfolds once the iconic briefcases have been won. WWE is holding a huge pay-per-view event in Paris in late August and the UK is hosting several 'Road to Clash in Paris' live shows in the run-up. As well as shows in Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds and Cardiff, Dublin's 3Arena will host the city's first ever Friday Night SmackDown. Meanwhile, Birmingham will host their first Monday Night Raw in almost a decade. Tickets are available for all shows via Ticketmaster here. Meanwhile fans who want to push the boat out can get VIP hospitality packages via Seat Unique with a host of perks including free food and drink and priority seating. WWE Money in the Bank 2025 final card and start time Unlike many of the other premium live events in WWE's calendar, Money in the Bank has relatively few matches as the two titular clashes for the iconic briefcases take centre stage. Confirmed for tonight at the show, which starts streaming on Netflix at 12 midnight UK time, are: The Men's Money In The Bank Ladder Match - Solo Sikoa vs LA Knight vs Penta vs Seth Rollins vs Andrade vs El Grande Americano Women's Money In The Bank Ladder Match - Alexa Bliss vs Roxanne Perez vs Rhea Ripley vs Giulia vs Naomi vs Stephanie Vaquer Cody Rhodes & Jey Uso vs John Cena & Logan Paul in a tag team match Lyra Valkyria vs Becky Lynch for the Women's Intercontinental Championship
