Britain's Rowland takes Formula E title with two races to spare

CNAa day ago
BERLIN :Nissan's Oliver Rowland won the Formula E title for the first time and with two races to spare on Sunday, the Briton becoming the all-electric series' 10th different champion in the space of 11 seasons.
Rowland had needed to lead Pascal Wehrlein by 59 points after the second of two races in Berlin, the championship's penultimate weekend, and he did it by finishing fourth with his Porsche rival only 16th despite starting on pole.
The Briton now has 184 points with Wehrlein on 125.
Sunday's race at Berlin's old Tempelhof airport was won by Jaguar's Nick Cassidy, completing a weekend sweep after teammate Mitch Evans won on Saturday, with Andretti's Jake Dennis second and Jean-Eric Vergne third for DS Penske.
The final two races of the season are in London on July 26-27.
It was the first time a Japanese manufacturer had won the championship.

Bardet makes brief Tour appearance as water carrier

MONT-DORE :A month after hanging up his wheels, former Tour de France podium finisher Romain Bardet found himself back at the race on Monday – but this time on the roadside, handing out water bottles to former teammates during Stage 10. The 34-year-old Frenchman, once hailed as the great home hope and a perennial team leader at the Tour, made a surprise appearance in the Massif Central, the region he calls home. Where he once attacked on mountain passes, Bardet was instead offering bidons to Picnic PostNL riders – a quiet, symbolic role-reversal that was not lost on fans or the peloton. Bardet retired last month following the Criterium du Dauphine, ending a career that included two Tour podiums, in 2016 and 2017, and four stage victories on the world's biggest race. While his days of leading GC battles are over, Bardet's brief stint as a water carrier showed he is still very much part of the cycling family.

Grieving Toone, Mead find support in each other at Euro 2025

ST. GALLEN, Switzerland : When England midfielder Ella Toone scored a scrappy goal from close range in the first half of their 6-1 rout of Wales at Euro 2025 on Sunday, the 25-year-old kissed her hands and pointed to the sky. It was a gesture to her late father Nick, who died in September of prostate cancer. Beth Mead, who has said she is dedicating Euro 2025 to her mother June who died in 2023 from ovarian cancer, similarly pointed to the sky when she added to England's tally with a second-half goal. The two, who are playing in their first major tournaments since losing their parents, have found a strong shoulder for each other. "We've really bonded over such a terrible thing," Toone told reporters after the game. "It's nice to have someone who's been through it and who understands and knows exactly what's going on and what's going on in my head as well. "We've definitely got each other's backs. We're proud of each other and what's nice is that we're constantly talking about them. We know we're doing them proud." Toone wrote a first person piece about grieving the loss of her dad, who was diagnosed the day after England's Euro 2022 victory over Germany in the final, for The Players' Tribune in January. Mead, whose mother died six months after England's victory in 2022, said their opening game of this tournament against France - a 2-1 loss - was emotional. "We both said in the first game we really struggled a little bit," Mead said. "You look to the stands for your person who was standing there and they're not there anymore. I think my mum was the first person I would look for in the stands. "I obviously understand what Ella felt in that moment and it's just special to be able to have that moment, think about them and dedicate it to them."

Jannik Sinner avenges loss to Carlos Alcaraz by dethroning him at Wimbledon

Photo: PARIS, FRANCE: After his disappointing loss at Roland Garros, Jannik Sinner made an incredible comeback by winning this year's Wimbledon title, dethroning the defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the final match. Sinner won with an impressive 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 score and claimed his fourth Grand Slam title. He also made history by becoming the first Italian to lift the Wimbledon singles trophy. With his achievement, Sinner expressed: ' It's mostly emotional, because I had a very tough loss in Paris… But at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter how you win or how you lose at important tournaments; you just have to understand what you did wrong and try to work on that, and that's exactly what we did. We tried to accept the loss and just kept working. This is for sure one of the reasons I am holding this trophy here. I am just so grateful that I am healthy and have great people around me, and holding this trophy means a lot.' He had three chances to clinch victory in their semifinal match, but Alcaraz made comebacks and won the five-hour-long match. Determined to win at Wimbledon, Sinner now played with focus and gave excellent shots towards Alcaraz's weaker side. The 23-year-old Italian had control of the match and finally defeated Alcaraz, ending a streak of five losses against the Spaniard. Speaking to Alcaraz, Sinner expressed: 'Carlos, again, an amazing tournament, but mostly thank you for the player you are… It's so difficult to play against you, but we have an amazing relationship off the court and on the court, we just try to build up, and to do that, we need the best teams in the world. Keep going, keep pushing, and you are going to hold this [trophy] many times. You already have two [titles]!' Moreover, Sinner declared after his win: 'It's so special. Seeing my parents here, my brother, my whole team, it's amazing. Actually, a special thanks to my brother, because there is no Formula 1 race this weekend, that's why he is here.' Despite his loss, Alcaraz congratulated Sinner and stated, 'It's difficult to lose. It's always difficult to lose, even if it is in the final, but first of all, I have to congratulate Jannik once again… It is a really well-deserved trophy [after] an unbelievable two weeks here in London for you, playing great tennis. For your team as well. I know that there are a lot of family and a lot of friends watching you here, so it's just an amazing team around you.' 'I'm really happy for you. So just keep it going, and I'm really happy to be able to build a really good relationship off the court, but then a good rivalry on the court. It makes me improve every day, so thank you very much and congratulations,' Alcaraz added. On social media, Sinner posted: ' Living in my dream ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thank you!!! 💜💚 @wimbledon ' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jannik Sinner (@janniksin) Netizens praised Sinner by commenting on the post: ' Huge congratulations🎉 on your well-deserved victory, Jannik🥕. Thank you for showing the world the highest level of resilience and determination of a champion. The sportsmanship you and Carlos have displayed has definitely added so much value to the sport🎾.♥️,' 'The most magical player in the world! You deserve it so much…,' and 'The way you overcame the heartbreak of Paris to capture this title is an inspiration, Jannik. I'm sure I speak for many when I say that your example was one I needed to see today. Well done, Champion 👏🏽.'
