UK Supreme Court overturns ruling on motor finance commissions in win for banks
Supreme Court president Robert Reed said the car dealers who sold the vehicles and arranged the finance did not owe fiduciary duties to customers, reversing a surprise Court of Appeal ruling that sent shockwaves through the motor finance industry.
Reed said the Court of Appeal had "failed to understand that the dealer has a commercial interest in the arrangement between a customer and a finance company."

Oscar Piastri edges out Lando Norris in final practice in Hungary
Lando Norris trailed Oscar Piastri by just 0.032 seconds in final practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Norris headed both sessions at the Hungaroring on Friday but played second fiddle to his championship rival and McLaren team-mate in the concluding running before qualifying. Rise in number of Guernsey minimum wage complaints
A government agency has seen a rise in the number of complaints related to the minimum wage. Director of the Employment and Equal Opportunities Services Ian Gavet said he had been presented nine cases since he began his role in said his predecessors had dealt with just one case in 2023 and one more in the nine cases in 2025 to date, Mr Gavet said three had been dismissed as the minimum wage had been paid and three enforcement notices had been sent to employers because the minimum wage had not been paid. One case had been dismissed because the employer could not be found, one case had been referred for consideration of prosecution and one case was actively being investigated, he said. Mr Gavet said the Employment and Equal Opportunities Service helped employers, employees and trade unions to understand local employment and discrimination minimum wage in Guernsey will increase to £12.60 an hour for adults on 1 October rate for workers aged 17 and 18 will also rise, from £10.80 to £11.35.

Tanak handed five minute penalty and suspended points deduction
Aug 2 (Reuters) - Hyundai's world rally championship leader Ott Tanak has been handed a five-minute penalty and a suspended 35-point deduction after an incident with a scrutineer at Rally Finland. Stewards reported that the Estonian stopped for tyre checking as directed at the end of Friday's stage seven but then accelerated abruptly before being given the signal to depart. The car's front bumper struck a scrutineer, who suffered minor injuries. Tanak was ruled to be in breach of the International Automobile Federation's sporting code regarding unsafe conduct, failure to follow scrutineer instructions, and misconduct. The time penalty dropped the driver to 29th overall in Finland, with the rally finishing on Sunday. The opens new tab website reported that Tanak had apologised and told a hearing on Friday evening that his car had cooling problems after he hit a tree on the seventh stage and he had wanted to keep the car moving to avoid overheating. Tanak is one point clear of Toyota's Elfyn Evans in the championship.
