Oscar Piastri edges out Lando Norris in final practice in Hungary

Independenta day ago
Lando Norris trailed Oscar Piastri by just 0.032 seconds in final practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Norris headed both sessions at the Hungaroring on Friday but played second fiddle to his championship rival and McLaren team-mate in the concluding running before qualifying.
McLaren have been dominant all weekend at the last round before the summer break with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc third, albeit four tenths back.
Lewis Hamilton was next up, 0.768 seconds off Piastri's pace, with Kimi Antonelli fifth for Mercedes and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso sixth.
George Russell took eighth place but Max Verstappen's troubled weekend continued after he finished way down in 12th.
The four-time world champion took aim at the handling of his Red Bull as he ended the session 1.2 sec slower than Piastri. Yuki Tsunoda was 19th of 20 in the other Red Bull.
Qualifying for the 14th round of 24 takes place at 16:00 local time (15:00 BST). Piastri holds a 16-point lead over team-mate Norris in the world championship.

His answer, however, was an unyielding message to his beleaguered Ferrari team. Asked whether he'd been at the Maranello factory in the last few weeks, Hamilton replied that he had. A 'couple of days each week', he detailed. Then, untriggered, the British driver, often so reluctant to reveal the inner workings of his mind, went into full disclosure mode. Secret documents and a rallying cry: How Lewis Hamilton is trying to revive Ferrari Hamilton endured a 'weekend to forget' in Spa but the seven-time world champion remains determined to end his F1 career on a high – and is already eyeing change for 2026 Kieran Jackson3 August 2025 13:40 HUNGARORING FACTFILE The Hungaroring is a 4.381 km circuit that lies around 45 minutes away from Budapest, the capital of Hungary. The track has hosted the Hungarian Grand Prix since 1986, and has proved popular among fans. It is known for its tight, winding nature and is both the second shortest and second slowest circuit in F1, having been compared to Monaco in the past. Turn 1 is the main overtaking spot – although Turn 2 and the hill towards Turn 4 often throw together overtaking battles – while the middle sector focuses on grip and keeping the tyres alive. While overtaking is notoriously difficult, there have been notable highlights over the years including Jenson Button's maiden victory in 2006, a superb strategic win from Michael Schumacher in 1998 and Esteban Ocon's victory for Alpine in 2021. Antonelli is certainly very fast, but also a very young driver,' Helmut Marko said. 'Strangely enough, we spoke briefly in the hotel at Spa, and he said that he has no confidence in the car. As soon as he pushes, he no longer has control. 'It's more of a mental thing, and it seems that [with] his car, like ours, it's very critical to be in the working window. When it does work, it's much more potent, and of course a driver like Russell does it much more easily. Mercedes, thank goodness, don't have the luxury of a second team.' Ruben Amorim has 'no doubts' that Man United can win Premier League and Champions League again

Ruben Amorim has said he has 'no doubts' that Manchester United can reach the highs of Premier League and Champions League glory again, echoing bullish comments made by his player Luke Shaw on the club's pre-season tour. United finished 15th last term in a dismal season, their lowest league finish since 1989-90, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham to finish without silverware. But Amorim, who said the 'hardest part' of his job was going to games 'know[ing] that we are not going to be competitive', felt confident that things could be turned around in his first full season as manager. Speaking to various publications on Sunday ahead of their friendly against Everton in Chicago, Amorim said: 'I know it's a massive gap from where we finished - but it's Manchester United. We need to return to Europe.' Asked whether United can win the Premier League and Champions League again, he said, 'I have no doubts. 'There are some things you cannot buy that this club has: pedigree, history, fans. With all these things, if we have a different culture, we can return to our place.' His comments echoed Shaw's, who said earlier in this tour that, 'The aim has to be to win the Premier League,' he said. 'I know people will be questioning me after last season, but it has to be that.' Shaw also made a comment that there were 'no stragglers' in the United team, with a major clearout of players taking place and several expensive signings heading for the exit door or out of favour. The exiles Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrrell Malacia were not included in the pre-season squad and have been given the opportunity to explore the possibility of moves away, while Marcus Rashford has been offloaded to Barcelona on loan. Amorim gave a matter-of-fact explanation of the state of affairs at Old Trafford. 'There are players that clearly show they don't want to be here and that is normal. They are not bad and I'm good. I'm not bad and they are good,' he said. 'If the market closes and then they are Manchester United players, we as a club have to treat them in the same conditions. But in this moment I'm just working with the players that I think are going to stay and the other guys are trying to find a solution for their careers.' Of Garnacho, who abruptly fell out of favour at the end of last season, Amorim said, 'He's a really talented boy and sometimes things don't work out. You cannot explain specifically what it is. 'But I have the feeling, I think it's clear that Garnacho wants a different thing with a different leadership and I can understand that. So I think it's not a problem.' The 40-year-old evidently sees his tenure as a long-term project. He said, 'I want to be manager of Manchester United for a while,' later asserting he wanted to be at the club for '20 years'. 'And I took five years to choose this club so I don't want to fail,' he added.

Benjamin Sesko's preferred club ‘revealed' as Newcastle prepare new £70m-plus transfer offer in bid to beat Man Utd

NEWCASTLE are set to fail in their club-record £70million bid for Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko - but will return with an improved offer. Toon are offering £65.5m up front plus £4.3m in add-ons but the German club are expected to turn down the offer. 3 Leipzig are hoping for a bidding war between Manchester United and Newcastle, who are set to lose Alexander Isak to Liverpool. Even if both clubs offer the same amount, Leipzig will look to increase the size of add-ons and the sell-on percentage. Sesko, 22, is certain to leave Leipzig and he was left out of the club's 2-1 friendly against Atalanta on Saturday. The forward is understood to be happy to join EITHER club. Leipzig sporting director Marcel Shafer said: 'Due to the very concrete interest from several clubs, we have decided that he will not play today. 'When I say that strong interest has been registered and approaches have been made, it's obvious what has happened. 'I would like to make it clear that this does not mean that he is on his way to another club. "And it also does not mean that Benji will not be playing next week.' 3 CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Yet Sesko is still unlikely to play again for the club particularly as Leipzig are also keen to sell the player. Leipzig are also set to sell Dutch forward Xavi Simons to Chelsea. Simons missed the Atalanta game with a neck issue although he could cost Chelsea up to £60m. 3
