All Countries Need Not Play Tests, Scarcity Is Test Cricket's Friend: Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg

NDTV4 days ago
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg feels not all nations need to aspire to play Tests, given the financial burden it places on some of the weaker boards and said while there is no definitive number of Test-playing countries, "scarcity in Test cricket is our friend, not our foe." Australia, which hosted a record-breaking Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the 2024-25 season, is set to welcome England for the Ashes later this year. Earlier this month, India and England concluded a highly competitive five-Test series, while Australia and New Zealand recorded lopsided victories against the West Indies and Zimbabwe respectively - outcomes that have reignited debate about the global structure of red-ball cricket.
"I don't think there is a right number (of Test playing nations) ... but I think in the future scarcity in Test cricket is our friend, not our foe," Greenberg told reporters.
"What I mean by that is, I don't think everyone in world cricket needs to aspire to play Test cricket and that might be OK.
"A lot of traditionalists might not like that (and) I'm not suggesting I know the number that will play, but literally we're trying to send countries bankrupt if we force them to play Test cricket." Emphasising the need for meaningful competition, he said: "We need to make sure we invest in the right spaces, play Test cricket where it means something and has jeopardy.
"That's why the Ashes will be as enormous and as profitable as it is because it means something ... it means something to every player.
"We've got to make sure when we play Test cricket that's at the top of our mind." The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently formed a working group to examine the Test format, and Greenberg expressed his willingness to consider new models, including a two-tier system.
"I've got an open mind to that question because I don't know the details to what a two-tiered structure would look like," he said.
"Test cricket needs an injection of capital and an injection of resources because it can't just be about Australia, India and England - it needs to be bigger than that.
"Red-ball cricket in this country, and in England and in India, is unbelievably successful but it's not like that in all parts of the world.
"It's incumbent on us to make sure we play our part to help, so the concept of tiers I think needs to be explored. I'm not prepared to say we're against something until we see all the details," he noted.

"Can't Pick And Choose": Irfan Pathan Slams Rohit Sharma For Missing Sydney Test vs Australia

Former Test skipper Rohit Sharma grabbed everyone's attention after he pulled out of the fifth and final Test against Australia is Sydney, earlier this year. In January, India lost the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia 1-3, ending their hopes of reaching the World Test Championship Final. Rohit, who also missed the first game due to personal reasons, had a lukewarm outing in the three games and eventually pulled out of the final match as well and gave the captaincy to Jasprit Bumrah. Recently, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan was asked whether Rohit's move was a tactical one for the team's benefit or just a PR stunt to protect from the criticism after the poor show with the bat. Replying to the query, Irfan stated that Rohit should have fought for his place in the team and fulfilled the role of a captain. 'Personally, I feel he should have fought for it, which I had said even back then, not just now. I think he should have played. When you're there, mate, if you're in the team, part of the team, the captain — even if you're just a player in the middle of a tournament — you can't pick and choose. You simply can't,' Irfan said on Lallantop. 'That's the responsibility of the team management, the captain, and the coach. But you can't pick and choose; you have to fight it out,' Irfan added. Irfan, who had interviewed Rohit in Sydney, also revealed that the broadcasters were compelled to support the then India captain, despite his evident struggles in the format. Irfan admitted had Rohit not been the captain, he would've been dropped by the management. "Rohit Sharma is an amazing player in white-ball cricket, but his average in Test cricket that year was 6, so we said that if he was not the captain, he would not have had a place in the team, and this is true," Pathan said in a snippet shared by Lallantop. "People say that we supported Rohit Sharma more than necessary. Of course, when someone comes to interview on your broadcasting channel, you will not misbehave with them, right? You have invited him, so you will behave politely. When Rohit came to interview, we were, of course, polite, and we had to show that, because he was our guest. So that was connected and said we were supporting him, but it was we who had said that he should keep fighting, but that said, he should not have had a place in the playing XI. If he was not the captain of the team, he would have been dropped," he added.

‘Smells like Indian curry': Irfan Pathan opens up on racist taunts from Aussie fans during 2008 Perth Test

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has shared the story behind his famous 'tongue out' celebration during the Perth Test match in 2008. Pathan noted how his celebration came in response to some racial gestures made by the Australian crowd. In an interaction with The Lallantop, Pathan said, "When I was fielding at the boundary line, they targeted me by saying things like, 'You have eaten Indian curry, you're smelling like Indian curry.' The Australian crowd try to get under your skin. I didn't change my field position and instead gave them replies," Irfan said during an interview with The Lallantop. "When I took a wicket, I took my tongue out to indicate that my tongue is very clean and there's no smell. So, that celebration was for the crowd," the former India cricketer added. Notably, Australia and India have had a tough rivalry in Test cricket, which has only peaked in recent years as India won two back-to-back Border-Gavaskar Trophies, followed by a win by the Aussies in the 2025 edition of the series. India eventually won the Perth Test match by 72 runs, and Pathan was named the player of the match with scores of 28 and 46 with the bat, along with 2 wickets in the first innings and 3 wickets in the second innings. Pathan also went on to narrate the story of how MS Dhoni did not want him in the side despite him being in form and performing for the team. "It was back in 2009, when we were in New Zealand. Before that, my brother (Yusuf Pathan) and I had won matches in Sri Lanka. The situation in which we had pulled a win—if it had been anyone else in our place, they wouldn't have been dropped for a year. In that match against Sri Lanka, we needed 60 runs from just 27-28 balls, and we won it from there," Irfan told the publication. "In New Zealand, I was benched for the first match, the second match, and the third match as well. The fourth match was a draw because of rain. I wasn't in the final match either. Then I asked Gary sir why I had been dropped. If there was something I needed to improve, he could tell me, but I wanted to know the reason I was left out," he added. When prompted why he was left out of the playing XI, Pathan said that these decisions are the call of the captain.

Who Did RCB Star Jacob Bethell Name as His Captaincy Inspiration? Says, Leads With Actions

Jacob Bethell is set to become England's youngest international captain as he leads the team in the upcoming three-match T20I series against Ireland starting September 17. At just 21 years old, Bethell will surpass the record previously held by former England cricketer Monty Bowden, who captained the side at 23. The all-rounder has played 13 T20Is for England so far. Taking over the captaincy from Harry Brook, Bethell expressed how honored he feels about this opportunity. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said, 'Yeah, quite a day. Obviously, finding out is kind of the first emotion that comes is pride. Um, yeah, captain in England is obviously going to be an honour, and I can't wait to do it. Yeah, definitely. Um, obviously getting picked for England's always an honour. But yeah, we had a great series against West Indies at the start of this summer.' He aims to emulate Stokes' style of leading by example, saying, 'I think a big thing I've noticed with Stokesy is that he leads with actions. He's always kind of the guy that takes the precedence and takes the situation on himself. So I'll be looking to do that as much as possible.' Adding to that, Bethell noted, 'Obviously, he does it in a bit of a different way with bowling, bowling fast and stuff like that, but I'll try and be doing that with a bat and ball and in the field as much as possible. But yeah, I think the biggest thing is trying to lead by example.' Bethell's Young Career To date, Bethell has made 29 international appearances for England, with the majority in T20Is and the fewest in Tests. In the shortest format, he has scored 281 runs and taken four wickets. His leadership skills and performance will be closely watched as he takes charge against Ireland. England's squad for the T20I series against Ireland includes Jacob Bethell (Captain), Rehan Ahmed, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, Jos Buttler, Liam Dawson, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, and Luke Wood. Youngest Skipper For England Jacob Bethell has become the youngest captain England has ever had across all formats, breaking a record that stood for nearly 136 years. At just 21 years old, this achievement underscores his swift rise in international cricket, especially considering he made his debuts in all three formats only last year. Bethell's appointment as captain for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland is due to regular skipper Harry Brook's unavailability. Brook will be leading England in the ODIs and T20Is against South Africa scheduled earlier in the month. With this appointment, Bethell surpasses Monty Bowden, who previously held the record as England's youngest captain at age 23, having led the team in a Test in South Africa in 1889 after skipper Aubrey Smith fell ill. Bethell will captain a strong England squad in Ireland that includes experienced players like former captain Jos Buttler. The T20I series against Ireland is set to take place at Malahide in Dublin on September 17, 19, and 21. Before that, South Africa will tour England for a three-match ODI series from September 2 to 7, followed by a three-match T20I series from September 10 to 14.
