The world's first 500Hz OLED gaming monitor is here — and it ain't cheap

Samsung has officially launched the Odyssey OLED G6, the world's first OLED gaming monitor to feature an ultra-fast 500Hz refresh rate. First unveiled at CES 2025, the 27-inch display is now available for pre-order and targets competitive gamers looking for extreme responsiveness paired with premium OLED visuals.
Surpassing the likes of Asus' ROG Swift PG27AQDP, the new Odyssey OLED G6 (G60SF) makes use of a QD-OLED panel offering a native QHD (2560 × 1440) resolution and a 0.03ms (GtG) response time aimed at minimizing motion blur in fast-paced gameplay. The panel is certified for VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500, which should translate to deep contrast and rich colors. It also includes FreeSync Premium Pro and is also Nvidia G-Sync Compatible, reducing screen tearing and stuttering during gameplay.

The monitor offers a peak brightness of 1,000 nits and uses Samsung's Glare Free coating to cut down screen reflections. To help prevent OLED burn-in, the display uses Samsung's 'OLED Safeguard+' burn-in protection technology which includes a pulsating heat pipe system to manage panel temperatures and reduce heat buildup. It also includes a thermal modulation system that adjusts screen brightness automatically, along with detection features for static elements like logos and taskbars.
In terms of build, the Odyssey OLED G6 features a slim, flat-screen design with Samsung's Core Lighting+ on the back, adding subtle ambient RGB illumination. The ergonomic stand supports height, tilt, and swivel adjustments, and users can also opt for a VESA mount if needed.
Connectivity includes two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 input, and a USB hub. Like its predecessors, the G6 is built around Samsung's Gaming Hub, allowing quick access to game streaming platforms and console passthrough.
Samsung said in its official press release that the Odyssey OLED G6 will first be available in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia, with a phased rollout to additional global markets planned later this year. It is expected that the monitor will be listed in the U.S. at $1,300, although pre-orders are now open in Singapore, with a listed price of 1,488 SGD, which translates to approximately $1,100 USD.

Phynd partners with Samsung to provide free cloud gaming services

What's happened? Phynd, a free cloud-gaming platform, has announced a collaboration with Samsung that will bring its subscription-free service to Samsung Smart TVs. The service is free to use and supported through ads, offering a curated library of games directly on the TV — no console required. Users can control games through a smartphone, TV remote, or gamepad, making the platform more readily accessible to the average player. The service will see a beta launch in the United States this year, and a global rollout is expected in 2026. Why this is important: The launch of another cloud-based gaming service signals the continued, seemingly inevitable march of gaming towards a console-free experience, but it also makes gaming available to a wider audience. More than one billion smart TVs have been sold in the last five years, opening up a massive potential market. Phynd believes gaming companies can offer free entertainment by selling advertising spaces to companies, bridging divides between different industries. Phynd is offering interested parties the chance to join a limited beta round to try out the service. Recommended Videos Why should I care? Phynd has not yet announced what games might be part of the lineup, but Samsung already offers titles like Starfield, Fortnite, and Call of Duty through its Samsung Gaming Hub. If those games become available through Phynd for free, it would allow players without access to the requisite consoles or platforms to try them out. This service has the potential to provide access to brand-new games for free. Games featured as part of the service will likely see an influx of new players, potentially bringing new life to stagnant multiplayer servers. Phynd says it offers a range of different titles, 'From must-play indie hits to blockbuster AAA titles—puzzle, racing, adventure, and more—PHȲND is your gateway to the games you love and the ones you haven't met yet.'

Asus has the new world's fastest OLED monitor at 720Hz, and it's dripping with style

We might have a new king of esports gaming monitors — one with fewer compromises than ever before. Asus has just announced the ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W at Gamescom 2025. Not only does it offer a 26.5-inch 2560 x 1440 QHD OLED screen at a blazing-fast 540Hz, it's also a dual-mode panel that can switch to a practically unheard-of 720Hz refresh rate when you kick the graphics down to 1080p* resolution. Asus may not technically have the fastest monitor ever made, as both Koorui and HKC have announced 750Hz 1080p monitors, but both of those have TN panels that won't even begin to compete on color, brightness, and viewing angles. They're from brands we don't typically see in western countries, and neither lets you switch to higher resolution when you don't need all the speed. Meanwhile, the Asus isn't just OLED — it's a tandem OLED panel that should dramatically boost HDR brightness and allegedly improve lifespan. It's also got a glossy coating that could make its colors even more vibrant and its blacks even blacker than OLED tech can already afford, assuming you're not playing in a room with glare (though Asus claims the coating minimizes glare 'even in bright rooms.') Here's the part where I'd normally say 'who needs 540Hz let alone 720Hz? Have you done the math and seen the diminishing returns?' Instead, I'm too busy gaping at Asus' stunning new silver and translucent plastic design. Clear gadgets are near and dear to my heart, after all, and the skeletal silver really makes it stand out in a sea of black-framed panels. Unfortunately, we don't have pricing or a release date yet, and I suspect it'll cost a pretty penny because Asus chose that groundbreaking panel and did all that work to set it apart. Seeing more OLED monitor prices come down to earth would excite me even more than a new flagship like this. Also, I would prefer a smaller stand to the huge three-blade propeller, but unfortunately, Asus does make you compromise to get that. The company's also introducing a new ROG Strix OLED XG27AQWMG today with the same tandem OLED tech, but as you can see in the one-pager below, it's a 280Hz panel that still relies on either HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 1.4's DSC compression, rather than the flagship's new DisplayPort 2.1a which boasts 80Gbps of bandwidth. Both have Asus' 'Neo Proximity Sensor,' a relatively new feature it's been adding to OLED panels, 'to accurately measure the user's distance to the monitor and automatically switch to a black screen when the user is away,' as an extra protection against burn-in. Asus also tends to offer a three-year warranty against OLED burn-in these days, and both LG Display and Samsung Display's newer panels have many protections against it; as long as those protections aren't over-aggressive, burn-in is no longer a reason I'd personally steer away. Just know that other monitor makers will probably use the same 4th-gen WOLED tandem panel from LG Display, too. SDC has already announced one, and other brands might follow suit. *If you've heard of 720Hz before, it's probably because LG Display already announced the dual-mode 720Hz panel that appears in this monitor. And if you're wondering why we say 1080p rather than 720p as others are reporting, it's because we fact-checked with both Asus and LG Display that the panel is 1080p at 720Hz. We'll let you know if we hear different. Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.
