Samsung just launched the first-ever 500Hz OLED gaming monitor – but I think it's overkill

Samsung has launched a new gaming monitor, the Odyssey OLED G6 The monitor is the first ever 500Hz OLED option on the market It will be available in other regions later this year Samsung's Odyssey lineup includes some of the best gaming monitors available on the market, many of which are OLEDs for immersive experiences – and it's just added another to the list. As reported by VideoCardz, Samsung has launched the world's first 500Hz OLED gaming monitor; the Odyssey OLED G60SF, which boasts an incredibly high 500Hz refresh rate and a 27-inch display at the 2,560 x 1,440 resolution. VideoCardz states that it will be priced at $1,488 (around £1,120 / AU$2,320). It's currently only available in some countries in Asia but is expected to roll out to other regions later this year. The Odyssey OLED G60SD is the current model available but instead utilizes a 360Hz refresh rate. The new OLED G60SF pushes this up to 500Hz, while also offering a VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 display with peak of 1000 nits – a step up from the G60SD's 250 nits of brightness. It's worth noting that Samsung recently announced that it plans to introduce cheaper OLED monitors, but that isn't the case with the new OLED G6. This is a monitor that should appeal to first-person shooter gamers, notably games like Counter-Strike – but aside from using tools like Nvidia's Frame Generation, there are very few games that can reach frame rates up to 500fps (or frankly, games that don't need to) even with the best PC hardware available. While there's no harm in providing a high 500Hz refresh rate, especially for browsing and games that are capable of reaching super high frame rates, the $1,488 price says otherwise. Having used a handful of monitors with different refresh rates over the years, I can assure you, you don't need a 500Hz monitor. With my Alienware AW3423DWF OLED monitor, 165Hz is perfectly fine and is the sweet spot for high-end gaming; some might even argue that 144Hz or 120Hz is more than enough. That's because the difference between them isn't significant enough for you to notice – unless you jump to one of those directly from a 60Hz display. The most impressive feature with the new Odyssey OLED G6 is in fact the VESA certification, as DisplayHDR True Black 500 and 1,000 nits of peak brightness will revitalize your gaming experience if you're upgrading from an LED display. However, there are many cheaper options for OLEDs on the market that can do the same, but just without the absurdly high refresh rates. Call me crazy, but I don't see the value of a 500Hz refresh rate monitor for gaming... Acer Releases New 500Hz Monitor For Gamers
The Predator screen is as fast as they come for gamers Acer has released a new 500Hz monitor for high-performance gaming, as part of a wider refresh of its screen line-up. The Acer Predator X27U F5 is a 27in OLED screen, with a 2,560 x 1,400 resolution and that super-fast refresh rate. It joins a growing number of gaming screens that are hitting the 500Hz barrier, with previous models from Dell Alienware and Samsung also hitting that speed, although some of those earlier models have been restricted to 24in panels with only Full HD resolution. Screen technology is beginning to outpace the PC hardware it's connected to, with even the latest graphics chips struggling to hit the 500 frames per second needed to fully utilize the 500Hz refresh rate. While older, less demanding games such as Counter-Strike 2 or Valorant might be able to push past 500fps on high-end gaming rigs, you'd struggle to get anywhere near that level of performance in more demanding games such as Cyberpunk 2077. That's not to say the 500Hz refresh rate is without merit. It should offer the smoothest possible visuals, no matter what game you're playing. And it means the screen is somewhat future proofed as graphics hardware continues to improve. The Predator X27U ticks a lot of other boxes for gamers. It is calibrated with True 10Bit color and supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, which synchronizes the screen's refresh rate with that of the GPU, helping to eliminate stuttering and screen tearing. The display also boasts VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 500 certification and covers 99% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. The screen will go on sale in Q3, priced at 899 Euros (just over $1,000). This one has its speed capped at 240Hz, but otherwise shares many of the same features as its faster rival. These include the True 10Bit color, support for AMD Freesync Premium Pro, and the same coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut. This one is DisplayHDR TrueBlack 400-certified. Like its faster sibling, it also has a 0.03ms (GTG) response time. This model is more expensive, priced at 1,099 Euros (around $1,230) and will also be released in the fall. Acer has been approached for full U.S. release dates and pricing. For those less concerned with the absolute breakneck gaming performance and more focused on entertainment, Acer has also revamped its Nitro range. The Acer Nitro GA321QK P is a 31.5in 4K display, with a refresh rate of 165Hz and 0.05ms response time. There's also a new ultrawide 34in sibling, the GA341CUR W0, which has a faster refresh rate of 240Hz, which is plenty enough for most gaming rigs. Both of the Nitro screens support Google TV, making them a more versatile device for watching content than the pure performance Predator displays. They also have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and support for Google Cast, so you can mirror content from nearby phones or laptops without needing a wired connection. Acer hasn't released price or availability details for these screens at the time of writing.

The world's first 500Hz OLED gaming monitor is here — and it ain't cheap
Samsung has officially launched the Odyssey OLED G6, the world's first OLED gaming monitor to feature an ultra-fast 500Hz refresh rate. First unveiled at CES 2025, the 27-inch display is now available for pre-order and targets competitive gamers looking for extreme responsiveness paired with premium OLED visuals. Surpassing the likes of Asus' ROG Swift PG27AQDP, the new Odyssey OLED G6 (G60SF) makes use of a QD-OLED panel offering a native QHD (2560 × 1440) resolution and a 0.03ms (GtG) response time aimed at minimizing motion blur in fast-paced gameplay. The panel is certified for VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500, which should translate to deep contrast and rich colors. It also includes FreeSync Premium Pro and is also Nvidia G-Sync Compatible, reducing screen tearing and stuttering during gameplay. Recommended Videos The monitor offers a peak brightness of 1,000 nits and uses Samsung's Glare Free coating to cut down screen reflections. To help prevent OLED burn-in, the display uses Samsung's 'OLED Safeguard+' burn-in protection technology which includes a pulsating heat pipe system to manage panel temperatures and reduce heat buildup. It also includes a thermal modulation system that adjusts screen brightness automatically, along with detection features for static elements like logos and taskbars. In terms of build, the Odyssey OLED G6 features a slim, flat-screen design with Samsung's Core Lighting+ on the back, adding subtle ambient RGB illumination. The ergonomic stand supports height, tilt, and swivel adjustments, and users can also opt for a VESA mount if needed. Connectivity includes two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 input, and a USB hub. Like its predecessors, the G6 is built around Samsung's Gaming Hub, allowing quick access to game streaming platforms and console passthrough. Samsung said in its official press release that the Odyssey OLED G6 will first be available in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia, with a phased rollout to additional global markets planned later this year. It is expected that the monitor will be listed in the U.S. at $1,300, although pre-orders are now open in Singapore, with a listed price of 1,488 SGD, which translates to approximately $1,100 USD.

Samsung Odyssey OLED G6 gaming monitor with 500Hz refresh rate goes global
Samsung has just announced the global rollout of its Odyssey OLED G6 gaming monitor - the world's first 500Hz OLED monitor. The monitor features a 27-inch QD-OLED panel with a 500Hz refresh rate, 0.03ms GtG (gray-to-gray) response time and 2560 x 1440px resolution. The panel is also VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certified, meaning the panel can reach 500 nits, covers 95% of the DCI-P3 color space and that the black is truly black. It's an OLED screen after all. Samsung says the monitor can go up to 1000 nits, although this refers only to a small patch, just 3% to be exact. In any case, 500 nits should be more than enough, especially paired with Samsung's Glare Free layer on top. The Odyssey OLED G6 also features OLED Safeguard+ technology that prevents burn-ins even during extended use. Last but not least, the device supports Nvidia's G-Sync and AMD's FreeSync Premium Pro adaptive refresh rate technologies. For now, the monitor will be available in Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, but the rest of the world should expect the Odyssey OLED G6 by the end of this year.
