Cast unveiled for new comedy drama The Walsh Sisters, led by Louisa Harland, Caroline Menton and Aidan Quinn

BBC News14-02-2025

The BBC and RTÉ have announced the lead cast members for new comedy drama series, The Walsh Sisters, inspired by the novels of international bestselling Irish author Marian Keyes.
The Walsh Sisters, directed by Ian Fitzgibbon, (Hullraisers, Moone Boy), features a chaotic, dysfunctional but deeply loveable family of five sisters, their mother and bemused father. It is part based on two of Keyes' books, the blockbuster novels Rachel's Holiday and Anybody Out There. The comedy drama is produced by Cuba Pictures and Metropolitan Films International, with producer Patrick O'Donoghue (The Tourist, Brooklyn, The Wonder) for Irish public broadcaster RTÉ in association with the BBC and Screen Ireland. Cineflix Rights handle international distribution.
Headlining the cast are Louisa Harland (Derry Girls, Renegade Nell, Love/Hate) as the troubled Anna Walsh and rising talent Caroline Menton (Oddity), taking on the role of one of Marian's most-loved characters, sister Rachel. Danielle Galligan (Kin, Spilt Milk, Shadow and Bone) brings oldest sister Claire to life and BAFTA-nominated Máiréad Tyers (Extraordinary, My Lady Jane, Belfast) plays the fearless baby of the family, Helen. The final Walsh sister will be played by multi-hyphenate stage, screen and screenwriting talent Stefanie Preissner (Solpadeine is My Boyfriend, Can't Cope, Won't Cope, How to Adult), who plays Maggie, 'mammy's favourite'.
In addition to appearing on screen as Maggie, Dublin-based Preissner, who created RTÉ's ground-breaking comedy drama Can't Cope, Won't Cope, is entrusted with the adaptation of Keyes' much-loved books. As the creative lead and writer across the series, Preissner is joined by Kefi Chadwick (Rivals; Death in Paradise) writing two episodes.
Irish-American actor Aidan Quinn (This is my Father, Legends of the Fall, Song for a Raggy Boy) is playing put-upon Jack 'Daddy' Walsh alongside his screen wife Carrie Crowley (An Cailín Ciúin; Hope Street; Smother), who recreates eccentric Mammy Walsh. American actress Debi Mazar (Kaos, Younger) has signed up for the part of Chaquie.
Caroline Menton says: 'I'm absolutely thrilled to be a part of The Walsh Sisters. Rachel is such a beloved character that has resonated with me and countless others around the world for nearly two decades. Hers is a story of hope and I feel so privileged to get the opportunity to bring Rachel to life and be a part of bringing Marian Keyes' iconic Walsh family to the screen.'
Louisa Harland adds: 'Couldn't be happier to be part of the Walsh family. These books mean so much to so many.'
Other cast members include Gina Moxley who will play Josephine (The Patient Gloria, Here Before) and Jay Duffy (Wheel of Time, Northern Lights) who will play Rachel's complicated love interest Luke Costello. Samuel Anderson (Amandaland, Landscapers) has also been cast as Aidan - Anna's love interest.
Billed as 'a comedy about serious things — a pacey, brutally honest and uncompromisingly funny exposé of the realities of being an Irish sister', The Walsh Sisters (6x50') will begin filming soon.
Set in their Dublin hometown, The Walsh Sisters follows the lives of Anna, Rachel, Maggie, Claire and Helen as they navigate the peaks and troughs of their late 20s and 30s. This is a sisterhood full of in-jokes, hand-me-down resentments and more than a few old wounds. But their DNA, history and shared love of power ballads keep the Walsh sisters together in the face of heartbreak, grief, addiction and parenthood.
Marian Keyes is one of the most successful novelists of all time. Her many accolades include five Irish Book Awards and being named Author of the Year at the prestigious British Book Awards in 2022. Since her first novel was published in 1995, more than 39 million copies of Keyes' books have been sold around the world, translated into 36 languages.
The executive producers are RTÉ's head of drama David Crean and director of co-productions and acquisitions Dermot Horan; Cuba Pictures' joint CEOs Dixie Linder and Nick Marston; Metropolitan Films' producer and director David McLoughlin; Cineflix Rights' James Durie and Tom Misselbrook; Stefanie Preissner; and Marian Keyes and Tony Baines.

Stephen Mulhern makes major TV mistake for first time in 10 years

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Stephen Mulhern looked mortified as he had an absolute howler on Catchphrase. The 48-year-old TV veteran has been on screen for almost two decades, and took over as the new host of the classic ITV gameshow when the revival launched in 2013. Even after over 10 years and more than 150 episodes under his belt, no one's perfect – and Stephen has proven that anything can happen in television. Over the weekend, he was fronting a celebrity special of the hit show – which sees contestants try and figure out a well-known idiom or phrase from a short animated video – featuring Jeremy Vine, Charlie Hedges and comedian Luke Kempner. The clip in question showed pastries with rapidly escalating price tags, which then burst through the roof of the coffee house. 'Literally, the prices have gone through the roof,' Stephen said, before quickly realising he'd given away the actual answer instead of just offering a helpful hint. Jeremy buzzed in and asked: 'Sorry, what? Was that the answer?' 'I have never in my life done that, in 10 years,' Stephen admitted, putting his head in his hands as the contestants and audience laughed. 'I was just thinking, 'This is a very tricky one, if it's not that,'' quipped Luke, before joking Stephen's own prize money total was up to £200. Jeremy added that the awkward moment was 'a bit of Catchphrase history'. Not surprisingly, viewers had a field day with some very tongue-in-cheek calls for Stephen – who reported to be among TV's richest stars late last year – to be 'sacked'. 'He really has to go for this. I can't see how he stays on,' @HarvesterStallo sarcastically wrote, while @stokeyjoey24 quipped: 'Embarrassing. Ben Shepard would never do anything like this.' And @utahisethan joked: 'ITV can confirm that Stephen Mulhern has been dismissed from his duties on Catchphrase and that Gary Lineker will take over until the end of the season.' Another viewer, @GavMack23, teased: 'Roy walker would never.' Catchphrase first aired in 1986 with Irish comedian Roy Walker at the helm, followed by Nick Weir in 2000 and Mark Curry two years later, before the show was axed. More Trending It returned a decade later with regular contestants, but from 2018 onwards the show has featured celebrities competing against each other to win £50,000 for their chosen charity. The programme was recently commissioned for an 11th series, and ITV commissioner Gemma John-Lewis said: 'We're delighted to announce a further series of the much loved family favourite, Celebrity Catchphrase. 'The only show where you say what you see, the hugely popular series continues to win legions of fans and with Stephen's infectious and playful humour it's a firm favourite with our viewers.' 'I'm a fashion editor and found perfect festival outfits at unlikely retailer'

The brand may be known for its lingerie and adult toys, but it's really been killing the fashion game recently - and its latest drop is no different Festival season is officially here - and if you've bagged tickets to Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, Download, Isle of Wight, or one of the other popular weekend events, you'll know that sorting your outfit is just as crucial as the lineup. Fashion editor Rachel Pugh has been hunting for the perfect ensemble, and stumbled upon options in a rather unexpected place: Ann Summers. She said: 'The brand is smashing it with its glitzy, dancefloor-ready collection. From sequin-adorned bodysuits to faux leather shorts, it's got all the elements for a main-stage moment - and some of it is even on sale.' reports the Manchester Evening News. One of her top picks was the brand's Flashing Lights Sequin Body, now £27.20 (was £34). She commented: 'In an electric pink and dripping in sparkle, it's practically made for dancing under the stage lights. It's bold, fun and cheeky, with a plunging back and mesh thong bum. Pair it with denim cut-offs, or go full throttle and wear it solo with a pair of knee-high boots.' If you're feeling particularly daring, the Eternal Rainbow Suit is another option. Now reduced to £28.80 from £36, it's crafted from rainbow lace and mesh instead of a solid colour, giving it a dreamy vibe. It also has underwired cups for extra support and adjustable shoulder straps for comfort. 'With a piece this eye-catching, keep the rest of your outfit simple,' said Rachel. 'Think black shorts and chunky combat boots to let the bodysuit do all the talking.' 'I bagged myself a pair of beige parachute trousers to wear at the Lido Festival in London over the weekend,' Rachel commented. Otherwise, Motel Rocks is another option. Known for its bold prints, sheer layering and y2k party-girl energy, it's perfect for a muddy field. Back at Ann Summers, there are also some great short options available. Festival-goers can go full glam with a diamante-detailing pair or keep it classic with a plain black version - both £28. The brand's festival range has not yet received many reviews, although a couple of people have commented on the diamante shorts. One person said: "Really pretty. The material is thin, which is perfect for summer. I love the bling detail on the chains. "I recently went from 16 to 14, and I am choosing size medium more often. I went with a size large on this one so that my belly doesn't stick out. They are a bit large, but I love how they make me look as if I have room." When scouring Ann Summers site for criticism, results seem scarce, yet there's a grumble or two about their delivery service found on TrustPilot, with one customer posting: "I placed an order which was cancelled a week later. No reason was given; the email stated that if I still wanted the products, I should place a new order." Speaking on the festival edit, Rachel concluded: 'Ann Summer has officially entered its festival fashion era - and I want it all.' Shoppers can view the entire range here.

Love Island contestant who replaced axed star admits already breaking show rules

The latest series of Love Island is due to grace our screens on Monday night where a whole host of new contestants will try and find love A Love Island contestant who replaced axed Kyle Ashman has broken show rules after signing up. Conor Phillips is due to enter the villa on Monday night when the new series begins. The 25-year-old rugby player has been preparing for his island stint and even recruited a former islander for help. He has replaced Kyle Ashman who was originally meant to be going on the show but was sent home just days before the series launch after it came out that he'd been quizzed by police over an attack in February. ‌ Conor has now said that he spoke to former winner Greg O'Shea before flying out to Majorca to get some advice. However, islanders are not meant to reveal that they are going on the show beforehand. ‌ READ MORE: Zara McDermott shares 'unreal' £30 hair waver that's been creating her go-to summer hair Fellow Irish rugby player Greg won series five alongside Amber Gill. Conor said: "I know Greg through rugby circles so I spoke to him about going on Love Island. "He just said 'be yourself, it's a really really really cool experience that not many people get. So enjoy it and yeah take it day by day and if you can be yourself you can't really go too far wrong'. So that's my plan. He was like 'my advice might be a bit different from others because I won'." He added: "I'm 25 and I've only had one relationship and it wasn't very long. So I feel like I'm maybe doing something wrong or maybe I'm not in the right places. So, hopefully that this is the right place and it should be you know because you're in a lovely villa surrounded by beautiful people, so I'm hoping that this is the one." Kyle has since spoken out about why he was removed from the show. He said: "I fully co-operated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation." ‌ It was reported that two masked people stormed a wake in Stafford and hacked at a dad with a blade. Kyle was one of two quizzed but was then released with no further action. It has been said that ITV were unaware of the incident which took place and was not flagged up when contestant checks were carried out. The 38-year-old victim nearly lost his arm and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment and kept in for around two weeks. Another person who was at the wake was glassed while another was struck with a metal pole. Two more people were run over by a car during the 15 minute attack. Love Island returns Monday, June 9 at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
