I-T busts 100cr refund scam, govt staffers involved
Chennai: The
Income Tax Department
has uncovered a bogus refund scam worth around 100 crore involving income tax practitioners (ITPs), chartered accountants, and intermediaries in Chennai, Madurai, Trichy and Jharkhand.
A series of survey operations were launched based on intelligence from Directorate General of Income Tax (Investigation), Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, targeting individuals involved in filing fraudulent income tax refund claims on behalf of nearly 4,000 taxpayers nationwide.
Operations were conducted at multiple locations, including Krishnagiri, Salem and Coimbatore, besides Dhanbad, and Deoghar.
Officials said these intermediaries submitted fake claims under various sections of the Income Tax Act, generating large sums.
The fraudulent activities primarily targeted govt employees including defence personnel across the country.
Officials said agents used advertising and outreach campaigns promoting "maximum tax refunds" to lure people.
In many cases, investigators found common email IDs created in bulk to file claims on behalf of individuals without their knowledge.
In one case, a Dhanbad-based agent submitted fraudulent refund claims for more than 1,000 taxpayers.

"Some taxpayers appear to have intentionally collaborated with these agents. We are identifying these people," an I-T department official said. "Dozens of agents have already been tracked based on mobile numbers used to reach potential clients."
This incident follows a larger I-T refund fraud uncovered in Mumbai in July 2024, where businessman Anirudh Gandhi was arrested by Enforcement Directorate (ED) sleuths for orchestrating a 263.95 crore scam involving fraudulent TDS refunds.
A Chennai-based tax consultant said, "Those involved should correct their filings promptly to avoid penalties and possible prosecution."
Investigations are on to determine the scale of the fraud, officials said.

Robots could soon replace humans to deliver your Amazon orders
Amazon is developing humanoid robots that could soon replace human delivery workers, with plans to have the machines "spring out" of Rivian electric vans to deliver packages directly to customers' doors. The e-commerce giant has constructed a "humanoid park" testing facility at its San Francisco office, according to a report by The Information. The indoor obstacle course, roughly the size of a coffee shop, features a Rivian delivery van where Amazon will test various humanoid robots in simulated delivery scenarios. The company is developing artificial intelligence software to power these robots while using hardware from external manufacturers. One robot being tested is a $16,000 unit from China-based Unitree, though Amazon plans to evaluate multiple humanoid models during the trials. Once testing concludes at the facility, Amazon intends to conduct real-world "field trips" where robots will attempt actual package deliveries to homes. The robots would travel in the back of Amazon's fleet of over 20,000 Rivian electric vans, potentially speeding up delivery times by allowing simultaneous drops at multiple addresses. This initiative represents a significant expansion of Amazon's existing robotics program. The company already uses autonomous robots extensively in its warehouses and has previously trialed Agility Robotics' humanoid "Digit" robot for logistics tasks. However, deploying humanoid robots for last-mile delivery in uncontrolled outdoor environments presents new technical challenges. The development coincides with Amazon's broader AI push announced Wednesday, which includes agentic AI systems for warehouse operations and generative AI for enhanced delivery mapping. The company is also working on smart eyeglasses for drivers that would provide hands-free navigation and delivery instructions. Amazon's humanoid delivery robot project could eventually impact hundreds of thousands of delivery jobs globally, as the company seeks to fully automate package delivery from warehouse to doorstep. The timeline for real-world deployment remains unclear, with testing still in early phases. AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now

L&T launches Green hydrogen portal to aware people of clean energy transition
New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): On the occasion of World Environment Day, a website, 'Discover Green Hydrogen,' was launched by L&T GreenTech. The website focuses on the global clean energy revolution, providing insights, expert analysis, and real-time updates on the rapidly evolving Green Hydrogen industry. Powered by L&T GreenTech, a key division of L&T Energy's Green & Clean Energy Business, the newly launched website reflects L&T's unwavering commitment to sustainability. This website is designed as a collaborative hub where industry experts, practitioners, analysts, and media professionals can converge, contribute, and stay informed. It offers rich, in-depth content on every aspect of green hydrogen and the broader energy transition, empowering stakeholders with the knowledge needed to drive innovation and investment. Green hydrogen is produced through water electrolysis powered exclusively by renewable energy sources like solar and wind. It offers a truly carbon-free fuel alternative. Unlike traditional hydrogen derived from fossil fuels, it emits no greenhouse gases, making it a powerful tool to tackle climate change and a critical driver of the global energy transition. Earlier, the government of India launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission, a move aimed at accelerating commercial-scale production for domestic consumption and positioning India as a leading exporter of green hydrogen. The mission aims to develop 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen production capacity annually by 2030--a transformational step towards a sustainable energy future. However, despite its immense potential, the green hydrogen industry remains nascent, with limited in-depth understanding, even among insiders. This knowledge gap highlights the urgent need for a centralised, authoritative platform that provides comprehensive insights, expert analysis, and real-time updates on this rapidly evolving sector. The ' has been created to fill this critical void. As a global energy leader, L&T has set formidable ESG targets: achieving water neutrality by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2040. Through its climate leadership initiatives, L&T aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 300 tonnes annually, impacting both its own operations and those of its clients. Green hydrogen is at the heart of L&T's clean fuel strategy and is indispensable to fulfilling these ambitious carbon and water neutrality goals. embodies this vision, uniting knowledge, innovation, and action to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen and secure a sustainable energy future for India and the world. This website will empower the entire industry by serving as a centralised, trusted platform--providing critical insights, fostering collaboration, and accelerating informed decision-making. It will help stakeholders navigate the complexities of technology, policy, and market dynamics, ultimately driving faster innovation, investment, and large-scale deployment of green hydrogen solutions across sectors. In doing so, will play a vital role in shaping a cleaner, more sustainable energy landscape for the industry and society at large. (ANI)
