Kolkata set to witness 'Reclaim the Night' protest again on August 14
Various platforms, including doctors' forums and social groups have given a call for candlelight vigils and meetings under the 'Raat Dokhol' (Reclaim the Night) protest.
Last year, thousands of people took to the streets of Kolkata on August 14 midnight and held a candlelight vigil to condemn the ghastly rape and murder incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
On the anniversary of the incident, similar programmes have been planned in Kolkata and the outskirts.
Raat Dokhol Oikko Mancha (Reclaim the Night United) has called for a gathering outside the Academy of Fine Arts in South Kolkata from 9 p.m. on August 14 to 5 a.m. on August 15.
"We have called for a gathering like last year. We will once again raise our voice to uphold the rights of women. We will demand justice for our beloved daughter who was killed last year. Through songs, plays and movies, we will organise a peaceful gathering in the city and send out our message to the people," said Shatabdi Das, convener of the platform.
Besides, these rallies and protests will be organised by doctors and common people. At midnight, 'Reclaim the Night' processions have been planned across Kolkata.
Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD), West Bengal, convenor Punyabrata Goon said, "Several rallies and candlelight vigils will be taken out in Kolkata and North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and South 24 Parganas districts. The people will once again reclaim the night and fill the streets with their demand."
Members of various Left organisations, too, will assemble at the crucial intersection of Kolkata and take out a protest march.
On August 9 last year, the body of a post-graduate trainee was recovered from the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

RG Kar rape-murder victim's father moves HC seeking nod for lawyers to visit crime scene
NEW DELHI: The father of the R G Kar hospital rape-murder victim has moved the Calcutta High Court praying for setting aside a lower court order that refused permission to his lawyers to visit the crime scene at the state-run medical institution. He claims that apart from Sanjay Roy — who has been convicted and sentenced to remain in prison for the rest of his life — other people were also present when the crime happened on August 9 last year. According to his lawyer, the petition is likely to be heard by a single bench of the high court early next week. The petitioner said that an independent inspection of the crime scene is necessary to help the court identify any gaps in the investigation. The body of the on-duty doctor was found in the seminar room of the hospital in north Kolkata on August 9, 2024, sparking nationwide protests. Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the city police, was found guilty and sentenced by the Sealdah sessions court to remain in prison until the end of his natural life. CPI(M) urges people to ‘Reclaim the Night' again, a year since R.G. Kar rape and murder
The West Bengal unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) on Thursday (August 14, 2025) put its weight behind fresh 'Reclaim the Night' protests to be held across the State tonight (August 14, 2025) to mark one year since the R.G. Kar rape and murder. 'In this State, culprits behind most crimes, especially against women, are in cahoots with the government tasked with punishing them. Women's rights, survival, safety, and employment are in question... So tonight, women across the State will take to the streets again to 'Reclaim The Night',' CPI(M)'s central committee member Minakshi Mukherjee said on Thursday. Exactly a year back, thousands of people across the State took to the streets on the eve of Independence Day to take part in 'Reclaim The Night' protests, called by civil society groups for women to 'reclaim' public spaces after dark. This had followed the heinous rape and murder of a female on-duty doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) in the wee hours of August 9 last year. 'On August 14 last year, when thousands were protesting outside RGKMCH at night, I saw from our protest site that police personnel were fleeing from the hospital right when a mob entered the campus. The police returned after an hour, after the mob carefully destroyed, especially CCTV cameras and their digital storage,' Ms. Mukherjee alleged. For context, during Reclaim The Night protests last year, violence had erupted at RGKMCH premises late in the night, when a large unidentified mob vandalised the emergency building of the hospital, damaging property, medical equipment, and furniture. The CPI(M) leader claimed that despite their party providing visual evidence of the local miscreants who vandalised the hospital to aid their arrest, the police instead allegedly summoned and interrogated innocent protestors who were demonstrating peacefully. 'Everyone was summoned, except the mob that vandalised the hospital, the culprits associated with the rape and murder, and those who engaged in evidence tampering, corruption and syndicates. They were spared,' Ms. Mukherjee said. Citing the various recent crimes against women in the State, she added that the party will continue its movement against injustice, torture, and the government's alleged cover-ups of injustice through its law enforcement. CPI(M) announces women's welfare programmes On Thursday, when the Mamata Banerjee government celebrated Kanyashree Day to promote the welfare scheme for school-going girls, Ms. Mukherjee also announced that CPI(M) will be introducing a slew of women and girl child empowerment programmes across districts to promote education, financial literacy, physical fitness and skill development among women. 'We will unite the women residents of every panchayat and ward and build Women's Councils across the State. The work has already taken off. We aim to bridge economic and social gaps, spread health-related awareness, empower them mentally, provide legal aid, tutor school dropouts, and conduct self-defence and sports classes,' she said.

The rallies and gathering, though much fewer in number than last year's, reverberated with slogans such as "the night is ours" and "meye ra raat dokhol koro". They protested against victim-blaming, ingrained misogyny and patriarchal mindset of the society through art, street plays and songs. Over 350 were present at Garia at 10 pm. The crowd increased as night approached. At Ruby More, there were over 500. Netaji Nagar, too, saw participation of around 350 in a torch rally. Over 350 hit the streets at Sinthi More. Not too many people were seen at Shyambazar either. All Bengal Alumni Association and 'Abhaya Mancha' organised a gathering at Rashbehari. A torch rally was held from Kasba Rathtala to Dhakuria Banerjee para. Advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya was one of the speakers at Rashbehari.
