Kolkata: A year after the unprecedented response from women and trans-queer people, who had hit the roads to reclaim the night in a show of anger over the rape-murder of a PGT doctor at RG Kar Hospital, women, girls and trans-queer persons were back on streets to rekindle the movement.
The rallies and gathering, though much fewer in number than last year's, reverberated with slogans such as "the night is ours" and "meye ra raat dokhol koro". They protested against victim-blaming, ingrained misogyny and patriarchal mindset of the society through art, street plays and songs.
Organisations such as 'Raat Dokhol Din Bodol', 'Abhaya Mancha', Reclaim the Night (Women-Trans-Queer) United, All Bengal Alumni Association, Behala Pratibadi Mancha, Jadavpur Puratani-o-Sanghati, Uttorer Kontho and others took part in 'Reclaim the Night' programme in several parts of the city, including Shyambazar, Kankurgachhi, Sinthi More, Lake Town, Nagerbazar, Baguiati, Academy of Fine Arts, Jadavpur, Garia, Rashbehari More, Dhakuria, Ruby More, Karunamoyee and New Town.
The protest took place in districts, too.

Rimjhim Sinha, the first voice to give a call for 'Reclaim the Night', said, "A year has gone by but none of the structural demands has been implemented. This year, too, we are on the streets to make our voices heard." Sinha gave a call of gathering at Jadavpur Coffee House.
Jadavpur Puratani-o-Sanghati marked the first anniversary of 'Reclaim the Night' at Jadavpur 8B Bus stand with theatre, speeches and songs that saw participation of over 350.

Reclaim the Night (Women-Trans-Queer) United screened two films along with cultural protest, which saw a turnout of more than 200. Over 350 were present at Garia at 10 pm. The crowd increased as night approached. At Ruby More, there were over 500. Netaji Nagar, too, saw participation of around 350 in a torch rally. Over 350 hit the streets at Sinthi More. Not too many people were seen at Shyambazar either.
All Bengal Alumni Association and 'Abhaya Mancha' organised a gathering at Rashbehari. A torch rally was held from Kasba Rathtala to Dhakuria Banerjee para. Advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya was one of the speakers at Rashbehari. Playwright and actor Chandan Sen, Badshah Moitra, junior doctor Debashis Halder were also present. Baguiati and Lake Town saw participation of over 150 people till 10 pm.

Kerala high court to examine ART practices
Kochi: The high court (HC) will examine the practice of bringing women from other states to Kerala for assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures. The court noted that such activities are classic cases of 'daunting and inter-state human trafficking', involving transactions worth several lakh rupees. The bench of Justices Devan Ramachandran and M B Snehalatha had recently interacted with the additional secretary of health services, who is the designated authority under the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, regarding malpractices in the field. The court was hearing a petition from a private ART bank in Ernakulam seeking release of seven women brought from other states to Kerala for surrogacy. Police had detained the women after a raid conducted with authorities under the ART Act. During the hearing, the petitioners said the women came to Kerala in response to a newspaper advertisement. HC called it a 'startling submission' and asked for a copy of the ad. Petitioners produced one that appeared on social media. The petitioners claimed seven women were detained. But state govt told the court there were only six women—five from WB and one from TN—and a child. One woman had already donated an oocyte (a cell in an ovary) in Hyderabad, though the Act allows such donation only once in a lifetime. While the petitioners named a seventh woman, the state denied this and said she was not present at the clinic during the raid. Govt also opposed the claim that the women responded to the petitioners' ad. It said the claim was implausible as the women spoke only their native languages and the ad was found on social media. The govt pleader said a probe is needed to find out how the women reached the clinic after seeing the ad. Police protection for 'detained women' Counsel for the shelter home where the women are housed told the court that many people were trying to gain access by claiming the women were detained illegally or needed to sign vakalaths or other contracts. She said this was causing a law-and-order issue. HC directed the SHO of Kalamassery station to maintain a beat around the shelter and respond quickly to any request for help. Hurdles faced by authorities Kerala has 110 ART clinics, 25 ART banks and 23 surrogacy clinics. Ernakulam alone has eight such clinics. ART clinics are classified into Level 1 (which perform intrauterine insemination) and Level 2 (which offer advanced treatments like IVF, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, surgical retrieval of gametes, embryo transfer and storage). The state has only one designated authority, headed by an additional secretary of the health and family welfare department. This authority issues licences, inspects clinics and acts against violations under ART and surrogacy laws. But limited staff and resources make it hard to ensure compliance. Forensic tests confirm peacock deaths in Karnataka caused by fungicide
Bengaluru: A week after the mysterious death of 20 peacocks near a farm in Tumakuru's Madhugiri taluk, forensic tests confirmed the national birds were poisoned. Toxicological analysis of visceral samples collected from the carcasses detected traces of a lethal fungicide, forest officials revealed. On Aug 3, three male and 17 female peacocks were found dead near the outlet of a lake abutting a farm at Hanumanthapura in Midigeshi hobli, around 120km from Bengaluru. This was the third incident of wildlife poisoning reported from Karnataka in less than a month, sparking widespread concern and criticism. "There were no external injuries or wounds on the carcasses. All internal organs were intact, but toxicological examination confirmed the presence of poison in their liver samples," said a senior forest official from Tumakuru division. According to officials, diphenyl metalaxyl, a fungicide commonly used in agriculture and horticulture, was found in the samples. The incident has rekindled debate over the rapidly increasing peafowl population in Karnataka. The State of India's Birds report released in 2023 highlighted a 491% increase in peafowl numbers across the state over the past 30 years. "Since peafowl are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, farmers have no option but to approach forest officials. Doc & staffer attacked by patient's attendants at Lady Hardinge hosp
New Delhi: A doctor and an X-ray technician were allegedly assaulted by the attendants of a patient inside the emergency ward of Lady Hardinge Medical College's Sucheta Kriplani Hospital in central Delhi on Wednesday. Nobody has been arrested yet. According to a complaint filed by the hospital's additional medical superintendent, around 1.10am on Aug 13, a 40-year-old woman was brought to the emergency ward with injuries from an alleged fall from a moving train. It added that she was first examined by emergency medical staff, underwent a CT scan and an ultrasound, and was referred to the surgery department. The FIR states that during the treatment, the woman's condition deteriorated and she collapsed. At this point, her attendants, which, according to the complaint, included transgender people, allegedly became aggressive, claiming that doctors were not attending to her properly. They then attacked hospital staff, injuring a 26-year-old postgraduate doctor from the surgery department and a 30-year-old X-ray technician. Both sustained facial and upper body injuries. The disturbance allegedly disrupted emergency services for nearly two hours. The complaint noted that security personnel tried to intervene, but were outnumbered. The cops were trying to trace and apprehend those involved in the assault. The resident doctors' association of LHMC stated that after the attack, it went on strike for increased security in emergency areas, restricted entry points and limits on patients' attendants.
