R.G. Kar protest rally: two Kolkata doctors appear before police
Senior doctors Dr. Punya Brata Gun and Dr. Tamonas Chaudhuri, who were issued summons over a bicycle protest rally demanding justice for the R.G. Kar victim, appeared at the Thakurpukur police station in Kolkata on Monday. Multiple protest rallies were organised on August 8 and 9 by activists and civil society groups to mark one year of the rape and murder of the doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr. Gun and Dr. Chaudhuri are associated with Abhaya Mancha, a civil society group formed to seek justice for the victim. On August 8, Abhaya Mancha had called for a bicycle rally from Thakurpukur to College Street. 'The summons were issued on August 9 regarding restrictions on cycle movement on the National Highway at a particular time. Today [Monday], my clients appeared before the investigating officers and were asked questions such as their place of residence. My clients said they have been on the streets for a year demanding justice for the R.G. Kar victim. Instead of nabbing the real culprits, the police are sending summons to protesters,' advocate Shamim Ahmed, who is representing the two doctors, told The Hindu. In the summons sent by the police, it was mentioned that it pertains to an investigation of a case lodged against them on August 8 under multiple sections of the BNS, including 285 (danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation), 235 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), and 3(5) (committing a crime together with a shared intention). Section 8B of the National Highway Act (punishment for mischief by injury to NH) was also mentioned. 'Intimidation bid' 'We do not know why we have been summoned, but it is likely because we are at the forefront of the protests. This is probably an attempt to intimidate other protesters,' Dr. Gun told mediapersons before entering the police station. Dr. Chaudhuri said during the bicycle rally, protesters and the police 'exercised mutual cooperation and it concluded smoothly and successfully'.

On secure RG Kar campus, doctors and nurses rue what they lacked a year ago
1 2 Kolkata: The deployment of CISF personnel and police force was conspicuously beefed up on the campus of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital when the clock struck 3 am on Saturday — around the time when a horrific crime had occurred in the emergency building's third-floor seminar room a year ago. The female doctors and nurses, while passing by the locked seminar room — where the body of the trainee doctor was found on the morning of Aug 9 last year — still felt haunted as they recounted the crime at the emergency building. Their only regret was that if the same vigilance had been there a year ago, the postgraduate trainee doctor would not have suffered such a "painful death" on duty. While on night shift around the same time on the same day in 2025, we have a sense of safety with the deployment of CISF and cops outside the ward and on the campus," said Anisha Basu, a house staff member of the emergency ward. "If the same vigilance was there, Abhaya could have been saved," Basu rued. There was rush of patients inside the trauma care unit and the emergency building, guarded by CISF and cops, including women personnel, in the dead of night when protesting doctors, flanked by members of 'Abhaya Mancha' and some locals, reclaimed the night till 4 am at Shyambazar 5-Point Crossing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? Five cops and three CISF men were spotted at the entrance gate, while two other CISF personnel were found checking the cards of patients' kin before allowing them entry to the emergency and trauma care unit. Around 3 am, the number of CISF and cops guarding the main gate swelled to 10, keeping a strict watch on the movement of people. Ankita Haldar, a Haltu resident, was was found standing in front of the 'Cry of the Hour', a symbolic statue for Abhaya on the RG Kar campus. The 'Abhaya Mancha' located near the hospital's entrance gate was empty throughout the night as protesters were at Shyambazar. A woman doctor walked out of the emergency ward and said: "We can now take a nap there without anxiety or feeling unsafe. The deployment has been increased further tonight. Why did we not have this security arrangement last year? This could have prevented the incident." The same question was raised by a nurse. "The CISF deployment is temporary, and we are worried about what would happen if they are withdrawn," she said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Protests outside Kolkata CBI office demanding justice for RG Kar victim
Kolkata Protesters held demonstrations outside the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Kolkata on Friday (August 1, 2025) demanding justice for RG Kar victim. Next month, August 9 will mark a year after the crime as parents of the victim and protestors keep seeking justice. The protest was organised by Abhaya Mancha (a protest forum formed to demand justice for the RG Kar victim) and Joint Platform of Doctors. The protestors questioned why almost a year later CBI has not been able to file a supplementary chargesheet and the arrest still stands at one. Protestors tied brooms outside the CBI's office gate and sang protest songs calling for justice for the victim (popularly known as Abhaya). The brooms were a symbol of the protestors demand to 'clean out the CBI office of corruption so that they can deliver due justice.' Abhaya's father said that the other two people arrested in relation to the crime, Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar and former officer-in-charge of Tala police station Abhijit Mondal got bail because the CBI failed to file a chargesheet within the 90-day statutory period. The two were arrested for 'misleading the investigation' of the case and delay in filing the FIR. 'We doubt if they will ever file a supplementary chargesheet. They claim they are investigating a bigger conspiracy, but I will not be alive to witness the results, they will continue the investigation for a lifetime,' Abhaya's father told The Hindu on Friday. Dr Subarna Goswami a part of Abhaya Mancha and one of the forerunners of the RG Kar protests said that the CBI's failure to investigate the rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar medical college is not an isolated incident. 'It is a reflection of the larger fascist structure where the ruling parties will continue to commit repeated violence against women's bodies and the state structure will use all its pillars to protect the criminals. This lack of justice, this impunity is actually planned - so that people forget, become discouraged, so that protests become silent,' Dr Goswami a senior doctor added. In an earlier conversation with The Hindu, the family had expressed their dissatisfaction with the CBI's ongoing probe into the case. In the rape and murder of the RG Kar victim, a civic volunteer Sanjay Roy has been arrested and sent to lifetime imprisonment. But both parents of the victim and protestors have claimed on multiple occasions that there was more than one perpetrator in the case. On August 9, 2024, a post-graduate female trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar hall of the chest medicine department on the fourth floor of the emergency building of the State-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The whole State erupted in protests as the details of the crime sent shockwaves across the country.

RG Kar rape case: Protesters demonstrate outside CBI office
Kolkata, Aug 1 (PTI) Representatives of the 'Abhaya Mancha', a doctors' forum formed after the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case last year, on Friday took out a rally in front of the CBI's office at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake near here. The protesters, holding broomsticks, alleged that the 'delay" in the CBI's probe into the case was because they were working in cahoots with the state government. 'The CBI is working on an understanding with the state government. Even after so many months since the crime took place in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, they are yet to come out with any conclusion of the matter," claimed Abhaya Mancha's joint convenor Tamonas Chaudhuri. An on-duty post-graduate trainee was raped and murdered inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital here on August 9 last year, triggering outrage across the country. The Kolkata Police arrested one person, and the CBI, which took over the investigation on a Calcutta High Court order, also made him the sole accused in the case. The trial court on January 20 sentenced the accused Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment till death. The central agency is continuing its investigation into the alleged conspiracy angle of the case. Incidentally, two programmes related to the crime are scheduled to take place in Kolkata on August 9 to mark one year since the incident. On that day, a procession is scheduled to march to Kalighat, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee resides. 'Abhaya Mancha' members would observe 'Raksha Bandhan' on August 9, and on August 14, the forum has called for a 'Reclaim the Night' march across Kolkata and the adjoining suburban areas from 9 pm to midnight. Twin rallies on Aug 9 to mark 1 year of RG Kar rape-murder
1 2 Kolkata: Two rallies will take to the streets of Bengal on Aug 9 to mark one year since the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital campus. Abhaya Mancha, a doctors' forum formed last year, has called for a protest march from Hazra Crossing to Kalighat, seeking faster justice for the victim. On the same day, BJP's Suvendu Adhikari called for a separate march to Nabanna. Abhaya Mancha members said on Monday that they will support BJP's march because it aligns with their demand for justice in the RG Kar case as well as other atrocities against women in the state. They added that parents of the victim of the rape and murder will join their "Kalighat Chalo" march. "On Aug 9, around 15,000 people from the city and four adjacent districts are slated to congregate at Hazra Crossing around 4pm and then march to Kalighat, where the CM lives," said Abhaya Mancha's joint convenor Tamonas Chaudhuri. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata "We have sought permission from Kolkata Police to set up a stage at Hazra. But we won't seek permission for the protest march, which is our democratic right. Even if cops hinder us, we will move forward. If needed, we will knock on the court's door," Chaudhuri added. On the morning of Aug 9, forum members will observe Raksha Bandhan. And on Aug 14, they called for a "Raat Dokhol" (Reclaim the Night) march across the city and the suburbs between 9pm and midnight.
