RG Kar rape case: Protesters demonstrate outside CBI office

News186 days ago
Kolkata, Aug 1 (PTI) Representatives of the 'Abhaya Mancha', a doctors' forum formed after the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case last year, on Friday took out a rally in front of the CBI's office at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake near here.
The protesters, holding broomsticks, alleged that the 'delay" in the CBI's probe into the case was because they were working in cahoots with the state government.
'The CBI is working on an understanding with the state government. Even after so many months since the crime took place in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, they are yet to come out with any conclusion of the matter," claimed Abhaya Mancha's joint convenor Tamonas Chaudhuri.
An on-duty post-graduate trainee was raped and murdered inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital here on August 9 last year, triggering outrage across the country.
The Kolkata Police arrested one person, and the CBI, which took over the investigation on a Calcutta High Court order, also made him the sole accused in the case. The trial court on January 20 sentenced the accused Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment till death. The central agency is continuing its investigation into the alleged conspiracy angle of the case.
Incidentally, two programmes related to the crime are scheduled to take place in Kolkata on August 9 to mark one year since the incident.
On that day, a procession is scheduled to march to Kalighat, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee resides.
'Abhaya Mancha' members would observe 'Raksha Bandhan' on August 9, and on August 14, the forum has called for a 'Reclaim the Night' march across Kolkata and the adjoining suburban areas from 9 pm to midnight. PTI SCH NN

Kolkata: A court in Bengal's West Burdwan district sentenced a 42-year-old man to death on Wednesday for raping and murdering his 14-year-old daughter in May last year, lawyers who attended the hearing said. The death sentence follows a series of similar verdicts passed by district judges in West Bengal in recent months. (Representative photo) 'The accused was sentenced by judge Suparna Bandopadhyay under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso),' Somnath Chattoraj, the public prosecutor, said. The girl was strangled to death at her home on May 13 last year. Her mother, who discovered the body the next morning, lodged a police complaint. AP HC declines plea for central probe into YSRCP-era scams; questions PIL's intent

VIJAYAWADA: The High Court on Wednesday refused to order a central agency investigation into the alleged irregularities during the previous YSRCP government, based on white papers released by the coalition government. The court questioned the intent behind the PIL, filed by Delhi-based lawyer Mehak Maheshwari. The matter was adjourned to February 11, 2026. Maheshwari had sought a probe into alleged scams and financial losses under former CM YS Jagan, as outlined in the white papers. He also requested the formation of a SIT headed by a retired judge to oversee the probe by the CBI, ED, and the Income Tax Department. The bench grilled the petitioner on the credibility of his claims, noting that the State had already constituted an SIT. 'What evidence do you have to say the SIT isn't investigating properly?' the court asked, adding that ordering a CBI probe based solely on white papers was unjustified and contrary to Supreme Court guidelines. Maheshwari argued that the SIT lacked central agency officials and had only investigated a liquor scam so far, without naming Jagan among the accused. However, he admitted uncertainty about the SIT's intent and the authenticity of the alleged corruption. Special Government Pleader Singamaneni Pranati informed the court that an SIT was in place and requested time to submit detailed reports.
