Kolkata: A court in Bengal's West Burdwan district sentenced a 42-year-old man to death on Wednesday for raping and murdering his 14-year-old daughter in May last year, lawyers who attended the hearing said. 'The accused was sentenced by judge Suparna Bandopadhyay under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso),' Somnath Chattoraj, the public prosecutor, said.
The girl was strangled to death at her home on May 13 last year. Her mother, who discovered the body the next morning, lodged a police complaint.

The postmortem confirmed that she was raped before being murdered, the lawyer said. 'Police found the rope with which he strangulated his daughter after raping her. The pattern of strands in the rope matched with the deep marks found on the victim's neck,' Chattoraj added.

The accused, who were aged between 20 and 27 during the crime, used to work at an automobile garage. The victim knew all of them.
The same Jalpaiguri court on June 11 sentenced a 31-year-old man to death for raping and murdering an 11-year-old girl in the Dhupguri area in 2023. The victim went missing in September 2023. Days later, her body was found floating in the Dudwa river. In this case, too, the convict knew the victim and her parents.

ED Seeks 7-year Imprisonment For Robert Vadra In Gurugram Land Deal Case

The Enforcement Directorate has asked a special PMLA court in Delhi to award the highest punishment — seven years in prison — to Robert Vadra and others accused in the 2008 Gurugram land deal case. According to the agency's prosecution complaint, the ED has also urged the court to permit the government to seize 43 immovable properties that it claims were bought by Vadra and his associates using using proceeds of crime (PoC) generated through money laundering. The Special PMLA court in Delhi has fixed August 28 to take cognisance of the ED complaint and issued a notice to Vadra. While elaborating on the mode of generation of PoC of money laundering by Robert Vadra in the land deal, the ED alleged in the complaint that the husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other accused also committed a penal offence of dishonest or fraudulent execution of a deed of transfer containing false statements (Section 423 of Indian Penal Code). In its prosecution complaint filed in a Special PMLA court in Delhi, the ED sought a maximum of seven years imprisonment for Vadra and other accused under Section 4 (Punishment for money laundering) and suggested penal or criminal action for the fraudulent execution of the deed. 'The transfer deed was executed containing a false statement of consideration with regards to receipt of sale consideration by the seller from the buyer and with regards to the total amount of consideration as well, thereby violating the provisions of section 423 of IPC. The buyer had never issued the cheque to the seller and the cheque mentioned in the sale deed did not pertain to the buyer,' said the chargesheet. Alleging a loss of Rs 44 lakh caused to Haryana government in stamp duty, the ED said: 'The sale deed refers the valuation of the said land at Rs 7.50 crore, on the contrary the seller got the payment of Rs 7.95 crore on August 9, 2008 (against sale consideration and stamp duty); and Rs 7.43 crore on August 16, 2008 (additional sale consideration). The undervaluation of the land directly leads to evasion of stamp duty.' Earlier, the ED justified its decision to file the PMLA case in the Special Court in Delhi by claiming that all the accused, except one, reside in Delhi and all the entities associated with the accused, which are involved in the process of money laundering, are registered in the Delhi jurisdiction. It is submitted that the FIR in this case was filed by the Gurugram Police. However, the offence of money laundering was committed by the accused at various places/states including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan. 'Further, most of the bank accounts of the entities associated with Vadra, identified as accused number 1, are also situated in Delhi and used by the accused in Delhi to acquire assets or to satisfy the liabilities of companies registered in Delhi,' it said. The ED said that Vadra received Rs 58 crore as proceeds of crime (PoC) of the involved money laundering and claimed that its investigation led to the provisional attachment of 43 immovable properties, totalling Rs 38.69 crore, identified as direct or value equivalent to Proceeds of Crime. Seeking confiscation of the 43 immovable properties, the ED said: 'The complaint is filed with the prayer to punish the accused persons under Section 4 (Punishment for money laundering,) which is a rigorous imprisonment for three to seven years and confiscation by the government of the properties earned by the accused as proceeds of crime.' Vandalism and cop injuries to be police evidence in high court

1 2 3 4 5 6 Kolkata: Cops in Kolkata and Howrah have registered nine FIRs across three police stations against those who attended the 'Nabanna Abhijan' on Saturday. They are accused of attacking cops, damaging public and private property, and indulging in violence and arson. Also, the organisers have been accused of violating the court order. Most cases have been drawn up under sections 189(2) (unlawful assembly), 191(3) (force or violence used by an unlawful assembly), 121(1) (voluntarily causing hurt), 132 (criminal force to any person being a public servant in the execution of his duty), 109 (attempt to murder), 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the BNS Act, 3 PDPP Act, and 9 WB MPPO Act. Those involved in the assault near J L Nehru Road might soon face organised crime charges, sources said. In Kolkata, six FIRs were lodged at New Market police station and one at Hare Street police station. While cops didn't specify if any names were mentioned in the FIRs, BJP claimed names of their functionaries like Ashok Dinda, Agnimitra Paul and Kaustuv Bagchi — who were seen at the J L Nehru Road flashpoint — were named in the suo motu complaints by police. Varma was at the hospital to check on police constable Prasanta Poddar (36) — the security guard of DC SSD Bidhisha Kalita. Poddar was among the three policemen admitted to the hospital after they sustained injuries at the hands of the vandals on Saturday. "He sustained head injuries but is otherwise stable," said Varma. Earlier on Friday, Lalbazar issued a photograph of Poddar being pinned to the ground by a protester while another protester was seen stomping his head. Sometime later, he was seen being rescued and escorted away by policemen while he was bleeding from his head. In total, five policemen were injured. Apart from Poddar, two others — ASI Jagabandhu Saha (58) and home guard Chaitanya Mahanta (30) — were also admitted to the trauma care centre of the hospital. Two other policemen — constable Nimai Mondal (44) of Tollygunge traffic guard and constable Mithun Ghosh (38) of Shakespeare Sarani police station — were discharged after preliminary treatment from the hospital. Ahead of the 'Nabanna Abhijan', police warned of strict action if Calcutta High Court's orders were disobeyed. Saturday saw a day-long chaos. City cops have filed seven FIRs but are yet to make any arrest. On Friday, Calcutta High Court reiterated that the protesters will ensure a peaceful protest and that the police will maintain the law-and-order situation. Various trader groups of Howrah Maidan, MG Road, Brabourne Road, and CR Avenue moved the HC, anticipating disruptions due to the march, considering last year's experience when the protest took an ugly turn and about 47 police personnel were injured and one lost his eyes. When asked about leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari abusing Varma publicly, the police commissioner avoided the issue, saying, "The matter is under investigation, and at this moment, it would be inappropriate to comment." Complaint alleges BJP MP Suresh Gopi is 'missing', student leader seeks probe

A Kerala Students' Union (KSU) leader on Sunday accused senior Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union minister Suresh Gopi of being 'inaccessible' to the people of his constituency and district for an extended period, and filed a 'missing' complaint with the police. Kerala Students' Union leader Gokul Guruvayoor files 'missing' complaint against BJP minister Suresh Gopi, alleging he is "inaccessible" to his constituency.(X-@TheSureshGopi) KSU is the student wing of the Congress party. The leader, Gokul Guruvayoor, raised concerns over Gopi's alleged absence from Thrissur, where he serves as the Lok Sabha MP, PTI reported. He alleged that Gopi has not visited the constituency in the last three months and has remained silent on the recent arrest of two Catholic nuns from Kerala in Chhattisgarh. 'Even if Gopi was a leader who had completely concentrated on the Christian vote bank during the last Lok Sabha polls and gifted a golden crown to a church to woo the community votes, he kept mum when the nuns suffered humiliation and arrest in the BJP-ruled state,' Guruvayoor told PTI. The two nuns and a co-accused were arrested for alleged human trafficking and forced conversion and were released from Durg Central Jail in Chhattisgarh on August 1 after a court granted them bail, saying the case was based on 'mere suspicion.' The Catholic nuns, Preethy Mary and Vandana Francis, were welcomed outside the jail by several leaders from Kerala, including LDF MPs. The KSU leader further charged that Gopi was unreachable even when authorities sought his presence for inaugurating a major central government project implemented under the Thrissur Corporation. 'The union minister was inaccessible not just to ordinary people of the constituency, even those in responsible positions in the state could not reach him,' the KSU leader alleged. Gokul said he sent the missing complaint to the East Police via email on Sunday morning and plans to submit a hard copy at the police station on Monday. He added that the KSU would launch a poster campaign across the district starting Monday, demanding action to locate the 'missing union minister.' With PTI inputs
