‘Cosby Show' star Malcolm-Jamal Warner dead at 54 after drowning

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor most famous for playing Theo Huxtable on 'The Cosby Show,' has died. He was 54.
Warner died by drowning on a family trip to Costa Rica, People magazine reported Monday.
Though he compiled a long and varied acting resume, Warner remained best-known for his first big role, as the only son of Bill Cosby's character Cliff Huxtable on 'The Cosby Show.' Warner was only a teenager when he was first cast in the show, and Cosby picked him personally.
'My biggest concern is when it comes to images of people of color on television and film, no matter what … negative stereotypes of people of color, we've always had 'The Cosby Show' to hold up against that,' Warner said in a 2015 interview, after the show's biggest star was accused of rape and sexual assault by several women. 'And the fact that we no longer have that, that's the thing that saddens me.'
As an adult, Warner starred on 'Sons of Anarchy' and 'The People v. O.J. Simpson,' among several other shows and movies.
Most recently, Warner started a podcast called 'Not All Hood' with Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley about the various identities and perceptions of Black people throughout the U.S.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner Was Trying to Save His Daughter From Riptide Before Drowning, Police Say

Malcolm-Jamal Warner tried to save his daughter in the ocean before he drowned, an official confirms exclusively to Us Weekly. According to Elberth León, head of the Tourist Police for Costa Rica's Atlantic region, both Warner and his daughter found themselves dragged by an ocean current when the accident occurred on Sunday, July 20. 'Both were dragged by the current,' León shared with Us on Thursday, July 24. 'They were bathing together and were caught by a rip current. Obviously, as a father, he fought for his daughter, but the current in that area is very strong, and they couldn't accomplish the objective.' León said authorities received an incident call through the 911 emergency system on Sunday near Playa Grande, Cahuita, Limón. When tourist police arrived at the beach, Red Cross personnel were already there. Malcolm-Jamal Warner's Most Memorable Roles: From 'The Cosby Show' to 'The Resident' 'They indicated that Mr. Malcolm was in the water enjoying himself with his daughter. At that moment, they were dragged by a rip current,' León shared. 'Two people who were there at the location went in with a surfboard and a boogie board to help rescue the people who were caught in the current.' One of the helpers managed to get Warner's daughter back to land safely. Soon after, the unidentified individual had to help another adult male patient. 'They managed to stay with the girl, managed to get her onto the board, but due to the strength of the current, one of them, from Nicaragua, had to let go of the board and push it toward the shore so the girl could make it to land or the coast,' León explained. 'The person who pushed the board was also dragged by the current, so it forced the person with the board to go back into the sea to pull him out. They managed to get him out in critical condition. He was very exhausted.' Warner was later pulled out by the Red Cross lifeguards and one of the rescuers from Caribbean Guards without vital signs, León said. The Costa Rica Red Cross confirmed to Us on Monday, July 21, that emergency personnel attended to two adult male patients at the scene. One man was transported in critical condition to the local clinic while CPR was performed on Warner. The Cosby Show alum was later pronounced dead at the scene. He was 54. The other individual has been discharged, according to León. 'The Cosby Show' Cast: Where Are They Now? The Costa Rican Judicial Investigation Agency confirmed to Us that Warner's autopsy was completed on Tuesday, July 22, with 'asphyxia due to submersion' found as the cause. His death was ruled accidental by officials. León said the beach where Warner and his daughter visited is normally under a red flag due to the very frequent rip currents in the area. 'We believe it was one of the days with the highest waves and the strongest currents,' León shared. 'He was at the shore rinsing off sand with the girl. They took a quick dip and that's when it happened.'

Malcolm-Jamal Warner Death: Police Clarify Daughter Wasn't in Water During Drowning, Timeline of Events

Warner died after drowning in Costa Rica on a family vacation Costa Rican officials are providing new details that clarify the timeline of events that lead to Malcolm-Jamal Warner's death on Monday, July 21. He was 54. In a new statement obtained by PEOPLE on Thursday, July 24, Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) told PEOPLE that Warner's daughter was not in the water with him when he drowned. "Mr. Warner was playing with his daughter at the seashore at one point. He then left her out of the water, and he and a friend of his entered the sea," the statement, translated from Spanish to English, read. "It was at that moment that they were swept away by the current, and the friend managed to get out," the statement continued. "However, Mr. Warner was unable to get out and was pulled out by several people on the beach. He received care from Red Cross officials, but was pronounced dead at the scene." The OIJ previously confirmed to PEOPLE that Warner's cause of death was ruled "asphyxiation by submersion." Warner's body was formally identified by the Costa Rican National Police and will be "removed from the Judicial Morgue by a funeral service company hired and authorized by Mr. Warner's family," the office said. Dr. Mauricio Solano Corella, Medical Director for the Talamanca Health Area, previously confirmed that a 29-year-old man from Nicaragua was at the scene attempting to rescue Warner. The man was "treated, found to be stable and was discharged without complications," Dr. Corella told PEOPLE in a statement. The investigation remains ongoing. Warner is survived by his wife and his daughter. Warner was best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show. His other credits include The Resident, Community, Malcolm & Eddie, Major Cimes and 9-1-1. He also co-hosted the podcast Not All Hood with his friend, Candace Kelley. "His other biggest mission, besides his family, was just being a good person," Kelley told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview published on July 24. "He wanted to be remembered like that; he has said that, he just wants to be remembered as a good person, and by all accounts, he's got that down. He really did. That was really sincere." Kyra Sedgwick's Signature Dish Is So Relatable (and Approved By Kevin Bacon)

Kyra Sedgwick's Signature Dish Is So Relatable (and Approved By Kevin Bacon) originally appeared on Parade. Over the years, Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, who fell in love on set while filming the 1988 movie Lemon Sky, have made it clear that food is one of their love languages. If you actively follow Bacon on social media, you'll know that the Footloose actor is an avid home cook and you've probably seen him cooking for Sedgwick. When she was coming home from being on the road, Bacon shot a video of himself prepping her a mostly vegetarian bolognese pasta. Bacon told PEOPLE Magazine that on Sunday mornings, he makes his signature 3-ingredient banana pancakes while Sedgwick is still sleeping. Related: And now, just in time for Bacon's birthday (June 8th), the Hollywood couple has shared a closer look into what Sedgwick likes to make when it's her night to cook. And judging by Bacon's bold proclamation, the dish very much has his stamp of approval. "My wife is making her signature dish, pantry pasta, and you better tell her it looks good," Bacon says as he stares directly into the camera in a recent TikTok video. (This intensely supportive partner bit is a new-ish TikTok trend.) The camera moves over to Sedgwick, who explains the main components of her pasta. "It's got olives and capers and tomatoes and tuna," she says. That combination of ingredients is guaranteed to be something good, so if you're looking for a nice and easy dinner for you and your honey, you might want to try Sedgwick's pantry pasta. She doesn't call it out as such, but based on Sedgwick's description, her pantry pasta is most likely a variation on pasta alla puttanesca, a classic Neopolitan pasta dish flavored with garlic, anchovies, capers, olives and tomatoes. Classic puttanesca pasta is savory and tangy, hearty but still light. The best part? It can be prepared completely without any ingredients from the fridge. According to New York Times food writer Mark Bittman, "There are almost as many explanations for the origins of pasta puttanesca as there are ways to make it." And in Segwick's case, it seems that she skips the anchovies and adds tuna. Related: When Bacon calls, the people answer, and boy did people flood the comments, per his request. "Hell, yeah there's nothing better than pantry pasta," wrote one commenter. "I don't like olives, but I'm kinda afraid of Kevin, so that looks delicious," said another. Finally, another fan posed the all-important question to the couple: "It looks great Kyra. When do we eat??!!" Related: It would be great if Bacon and Sedgwick opened up a pop-up, but don't worry if that doesn't happen. Pasta alla puttanesca is deceptively easy to make. All you have to do is cook garlic and anchovies (or tuna) in olive oil until the garlic turns golden. Add crushed canned tomatoes, season with salt and pepper and cook until you have a chunky sauce. Stir in olives and capers (plus some red chili flakes, if you'd like). Cook your favorite pasta according to package directions. Drain the pasta and transfer it to the pan with the sauce (don't do what Sedgwick did and spill half of the pasta on the stove). Toss to marry the noodles and sauce together, like a happy couple, then serve it Sedgwick's Signature Dish Is So Relatable (and Approved By Kevin Bacon) first appeared on Parade on Jul 8, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 8, 2025, where it first appeared.
