IPOH: More than 4,000 personnel from the Malaysian Army, United States Army Pacific Command (USARPAC) and the Australian Army are participating in the Keris Strike Exercise Series 30/2025, a trilateral military cooperation exercise commencing on Thursday (July 17).
In a statement on Thursday, the Malaysian Army Public Relations Cell announced that the contingent includes 415 officers and 3,322 other ranks from Malaysia, 50 officers and 183 other ranks from USARPAC, as well as seven officers and 129 other ranks from Australia.
The annual exercise, now in its 30th iteration, aims to strengthen strategic cooperation, enhance joint operational capabilities and deepen military ties among the participating countries.
"Since its inception, Keris Strike has served as a key platform for combined training, featuring components such as Staff Exercise (STAFFEX), Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE), Cross Training Exercise (CTX) and Field Training Exercise (FTX)," the statement said.
In 2024, the exercise marked a milestone with the inaugural participation of the Australian Army's Rifle Company Butterworth (RCB), based in Butterworth, Penang.
The exercise was officially launched at the parade ground of the Second Battalion, Royal Ranger Regiment (2 RRD) here by Army deputy chief Lieutenant General Datuk Tengku Muhammad Fauzi Tengku Ibrahim, Australian Assistant Defence Advisor Wing Commander Mike Edwards and United States 25th Infantry Division Deputy Commanding General Colonel Jim D. Kiersey.
Keris Strike 2025 features the Malaysian Second Infantry Brigade as the lead formation, supported by the US 1-27 Infantry Regiment from Hawaii's 25th Infantry Division and the Rifle Company Butterworth.
Running from July 17 to 29, the exercise covers strategic locations from Sungai Siput to Lenggong in Perak.
The FTX phase, set for July 24 to 29, will be the exercise's main event, demonstrating the readiness and joint coordination of the participating forces.
Beyond strengthening military camaraderie, the exercise symbolises Malaysia's and its partners' commitment to regional security and stability, the statement said. – Bernama

State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan said the initiatives involve participation from all levels of society, including school students and state constituencies. 'In Melaka, we have members of 84 Komuniti MADANI who have been actively organising various programmes and activities to enliven the National Day celebrations. These initiatives are supported through allocations channelled by the Information Department and the Ministry of Communications, ' he said. bootstrap slideshow He added that the programmes include a variety of activities such as debates, independence-themed storytelling sessions, and the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2025. 'The implementation of these programmes has also been extended to government departments and private agencies in the state to encourage broader community participation in the National Month celebrations,' he said during the flag-off ceremony of the 2025 KMJG, marking its journey from Melaka to Negeri Sembilan, held here today. Kenya plans talks with Tanzania over new trade restrictions
NAIROBI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Kenya announced on Wednesday that it will hold meetings with Tanzania in early August to address concerns over recently introduced "discriminatory" tax measures and trade restrictions, including a ban on non-citizens operating small-scale businesses in Tanzania. Lee Kinyanjui, cabinet secretary in Kenya's Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, said the measures introduced by Tanzania on Monday threaten the gains made in regional integration under the East African Community (EAC) framework. He raised concern over Tanzania's Finance Act 2025 and recent amendments to the Excise (Management and Tariff) Act 2019, which introduced new excise duties and an industrial development levy at rates of 10 percent and 15 percent, respectively. He also cited the Business Licensing (Prohibition of Business Activities for Non-Citizens) Order, 2025, which bars non-Tanzanians from engaging in 15 specific sectors, including micro and small enterprises. The order, which includes stiff penalties for violations, took immediate effect, except for current license holders. "These measures are substantive and undermine the core objectives of regional economic integration under the Common Market Protocol," Kinyanjui said, referring to the EAC's commitment to creating a single market that ensures the free movement of goods, services, capital, labor, and the rights of residence and establishment. "Kenya requests that these restrictions be removed and that Tanzania reverts to measures provided for in the EAC protocol," Kinyanjui said. Kinyanjui warned that the licensing order appears to criminalize otherwise lawful EAC investments and risks damaging both economies. "It is therefore critical, in the spirit of EAC, that bilateral engagements be held to resolve these issues," he said, adding that further bilateral discussions have been scheduled to address the recent measures and other ongoing trade concerns. According to the official, the EAC remains Kenya's largest export market, accounting for 28.1 percent of its total exports, valued at approximately 2.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2024. Tanzania is Kenya's second-largest EAC trading partner after Uganda, with bilateral trade valued at 487 million dollars this year.

FAA failed to act before fatal helicopter crash, US transport chief says
WASHINGTON: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) failed to take action despite dozens of near-miss incidents before a fatal January crash involving an American Airlines regional jet and an Army helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on Tuesday. 'The mistake was that this was not unforeseen. We had 84 near misses in the three years before in the D.C. air space, and no one did anything,' Duffy told reporters. 'Someone was asleep at the wheel. Someone should have seen that.' The January 29 crash, which killed 67 people, occurred just days after President Donald Trump took office. Duffy said it was unclear if the safety data had been elevated to then-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg or the FAA leadership under President Joe Biden. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) disclosed in March that since 2021, there were 15,200 air separation incidents near Reagan between commercial airplanes and helicopters, including 85 close-call events. Duffy added that the FAA was reviewing other recent near-miss incidents and potential hot spots. 'We've seen some near misses recently. We're not ignoring that,' Duffy said, noting that the FAA was considering 'what moves do we have to take to make sure it doesn't happen again.' Lawmakers from both parties have questioned why the FAA failed to act for years to address close calls involving helicopters near Reagan. 'Clearly, something was missed,' FAA Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau told senators in March. The FAA in early May barred the Army from helicopter flights around the Pentagon after a May 1 close call that forced two civilian planes to abort landings. The FAA said Tuesday the helicopter flights remained on hold even after the agency disclosed it had signed a new agreement with the Army on July 1. Separately, U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll met Tuesday with relatives of those killed in the crash. The NTSB is holding a three-day investigative hearing into the January crash starting on Wednesday, reviewing the Army helicopter's air data systems and altimeters, as well as FAA oversight of Washington airspace. On Tuesday, Senator Ted Cruz and several other Republican senators unveiled legislation to require the use of ADS-B, an advanced aircraft-tracking technology, by military helicopters near civilian planes. The accident helicopter was not using ADS-B at the time of the January collision. - Reuters
