Jaishankar calls for sustained dialogue to bring India-China relations back on track
On the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, Mr. Jaishankar said its resumption is 'widely appreciated in India'. Mr. Jaishankar china visit since the military conflict along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh began in 2020.
Last month, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra resumed after six years, the first such Kailash Mansarovar Yatra jaishankar china pilgrimage to be held since the last one. The move was announced after talks between External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart.
'It's a privilege to be here for the SCO Foreign Ministers' meeting. We are confident that the Chinese presidency will ensure a fruitful and successful tenure and India is ready to support you,' he added.
The external affairs minister hoped that this visit would further add to this positive momentum. 'I think India and China have an important role in the region and internationally, and it's only logical that we must keep an open and constructive dialogue. I'm very much looking forward to having that opportunity on this visit,' he added.
'The international situation, as we meet today, Excellency, is very complex.
The two foreign ministers last met on the sidelines of a G20 meeting last February in Johannesburg, South Africa and there too both sides had repeated calls for building mutual trust and support.
Tianjin will be the host city for the SCO foreign ministers' meeting on Tuesday.
Wang Yi will also be expected to travel to India next month to meet NSA Ajit Doval, part of the planned cycle of dialogue under the Special Representatives (SR) mechanism to resolve the decades-old boundary dispute.
China, the current SCO chair, is hosting the grouping's meetings.

Yashobhoomi convention centre in Delhi's Dwarka wins International Architecture Award 2024
New Delhi It was inaugurated in September 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (HT Archive) The Yashobhoomi Convention and Exhibition Centre in Dwarka, southwest Delhi, has won the International Architecture Award 2024 under the 'Civic Centre' category, which will be presented next month at the historic Acropolis in Athens, Greece, a globally recognised landmark in architecture. The prize is awarded by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, and The European Centre for Architecture Art, Design and Urban Studies. Dikshu C Kukreja, managing principal of CP Kukreja Architects, which designed the centre, said: 'Yashobhoomi embodies Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of positioning India as a leading global hub.' Designed in collaboration with IDOM (Spain), Yashobhoomi spans 225 acres and has a built-up area of 2.2 million square feet. It was inaugurated in September 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The venue, built at a cost of ₹5,400 crore, features multiple exhibition halls, auditoriums and conference rooms to host trade and diplomatic events. Kukreja said the Union ministry of commerce selected them for the global competition. The firm is renowned for designing the Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Ambadeep Towers in Delhi. It was recently internationally recognised for designing the Madhya Pradesh state secretariat and Gautam Buddha University. Recalling that the project's conceptualisation involved close collaboration with retired IAS officer Amitabh Kant, who was also the G20 Sherpa, to ensure the facility could host high-profile gatherings, such as the G20 Summit. After the award was announced, Kant thanked the Prime Minister on the social media platform X, 'for the vision and opportunity to conceptualise and drive it as Secretary DIPP (Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion)'. What sets Yashobhoomi apart, Kukreja said, is its fusion of modern technology with traditional Indian identity. 'It's easy to copy global examples from Germany, Korea, or the US; but for me, it was essential to root the design in India's ethos—through stepwell-inspired forms, jali screens, aangan-like light courts, and interiors steeped in Indian art and motifs.' He said the exhibition hall spans an area equivalent to four football fields. The venue features a 100-metre column-free span and the world's largest LED facade. 'The venue is also India's first to incorporate retractable seating that can transform a 6,000-seater hall into a flat-floored multi-purpose space at the touch of a button,' he said. Large venues like this often turn into 'white elephants' due to a lack of versatility. 'So, we ensured that the hall can have multiple uses,' he said. Kukreja said sustainability was a core design priority, and this secured the Indian Green Building Council's platinum rating. 'Steel was chosen to minimise localised pollution. This ensured durability and lower carbon impact, while featuring recycled materials, locally sourced granite and marble, and off-site fabricated glass-reinforced concrete,' he said. Kukreja said the award was more than personal recognition. 'This is about India creating architecture the world talks about and respects.'

US phone glass maker Corning expands tie-up with Optiemus
NEW DELHI: Top American specialty glass and technology company Corning is expanding its business in India as it ties up with local contract manufacturer Optiemus through a trademark and licensing agreement for screen protectors. The company is also close to starting production of finished cover glass for smartphones in India in a Rs 1,000-crore JV also with Optiemus. The factory is likely to begin production in Dec this year. This will be the first time it will directly supply finished cover glass from India rather than importing it. The customers for the cover glass are likely to include companies, such as Apple, Samsung, and the Chinese makers, who account for a majority of smartphone sales in the country. Ashok Gupta, chairman of Optiemus Infra, said the company will import glass sheets into India for tempered glass and these will be sold in the country under the Rhinotech brand after processing as per Corning's techniques and mandates. The domestic market for tempered glass screen protectors is expected to see annual sales of 400 million pieces this year with an estimated retail value of Rs 20,000 crore. Most of these are currently sold through the unorganised sector after imports from China and Vietnam. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mit Yazid: New Container Houses – Take A Look At The Prices! "We believe that this development will support India's growing need for providing screen protectors for the mobile consumer electronics industry." Sources said govt is concerned over import of "low quality but high revenue" tempered glass into India. "BIS standards for setting quality standards for screen protectors have been announced and will need to be implemented over next few months. This will lead to higher production of tempered glass in India, which is critical as its volumes and turnover have been going up each year," a senior official at IT ministry said.
