Qatar participates in Council of Arab Health Ministers meetings

Qatar participated in the 62nd session of the Council of Arab Health Ministers, held in Geneva, Switzerland, in parallel with the meetings of the World Health
Assembly.
Qatar's delegation to the meetings was led by Minister of Public Health His Excellency Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud.
The meetings of the Council of Arab Health Ministers reviewed several important topics, most notably the state of healthcare in the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan, as well as the Arab Committee for Health Emergency Preparedness and Response, and the Arab Health Economics Strategy (2025-2030), which aims to promote the use of health economics approaches to address key health priorities.

QU celebrates first PhD graduates of its Health Sciences programme
Tribune News Network Doha Qatar University (QU) has announced the graduation of the first two students from its PhD in Health Sciences programme, marking a significant milestone for QU Health and its commitment to advancing research aligned with Qatar's national health priorities. The PhD in Health Sciences, governed by the 'Health Sector Graduate Studies Office', offers two specialised tracks: Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research and Clinical and Population Health Research. This year's achievement highlights the graduation of one student from each track, signaling the program's growing impact on national and global health research. Dr. Jazeel Abdulmajeed is the first graduate of the Clinical and Population Health Research track. His research addressed the appropriate use of effect measures in clinical research, proposing improvements that enhance the interpretation and reliability of healthcare evidence, particularly in observational studies and meta-analyses. Dr. Abdulmajeed said, 'My PhD aimed to improve the methodological foundations of clinical research to ensure that health decisions are based on accurate and meaningful evidence. I am honoured to be the first graduate of this track and proud to contribute to the advancement of research excellence at QU.' Dr. Abdulmajeed was supervised by Prof. Suhail Doi, head of the Department of Population Medicine at the College of Medicine. Prof. Doi said, 'Dr. Abdulmajeed's research offers important methodological solutions that improve how we assess and apply healthcare data in real-world settings.' In parallel with his academic work, Dr. Abdulmajeed also contributes to the Business and Health Intelligence Department at the Primary Health Care Corporation and has served in various roles at the Ministry of Public Health. On her part, Nadin Younes, the first graduate of the Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research track, focused her doctoral work on improving disease diagnostics. Her research led to the development of rapid, cost-effective tools to detect Norovirus and Hepatitis E Virus — pathogens that pose a high risk in densely populated and resource-limited environments. 'I aimed to design accessible and affordable diagnostic tools that could support early detection and better outbreak control,' Younes explained. 'I'm thankful to my supervisor and the supportive research environment at QU Health that made this possible.' Supervised by Prof. Gheyath Nasrallah, professor of Immunology and Microbiology at the College of Health Sciences, her work resulted in the creation of a novel lateral flow assay for Norovirus, which is now undergoing regulatory review with support for potential commercialisation. A complementary test for Hepatitis E Virus is also nearing completion. 'Nadin's research addresses a pressing public health need and demonstrates the potential of applied biomedical innovation in Qatar,' said Prof. Nasrallah. Dr. Muhammad Abdul Hadi, coordinator of the Clinical and Population Health Research track, emphasised the broader importance of this achievement, 'This graduation signifies more than academic success — it reflects our programme's vision of developing researchers who are equipped to address complex health challenges. We are proud of our graduates for setting a strong precedent for future cohorts,' Abdul Hadi said. Dr. Asad Javaid, coordinator of the Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Research track, also praised the significance of this achievement, saying, 'The success of our first graduate is a powerful testament to the relevance and innovation embedded in our curriculum. This programme is designed to empower researchers to translate scientific discovery into practical solutions that address real-world health challenges. Nadin's achievement is just the beginning of the impact we aim to deliver—both in Qatar and beyond.' With this milestone, QU continues to expand its role as a leader in health research and innovation, contributing to the nation's long-term goals under Qatar National Vision 2030.

Israeli strikes kill at least 52 across Gaza
Agencies Gaza At least 52 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes across Gaza on Thursday, medical sources told Al Jazeera, as a US-backed group said it would reopen two aid distribution centres in the war-torn Strip. At least seven people, including four journalists, were killed in an Israeli drone attack on Al Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City, medical sources said. Palestinian health authorities confirmed the deaths of four journalists. Gaza's Government Media Office said the deaths raised the total number of journalists killed in Israel's war on Gaza since October 2023 to 224. The attack comes as the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) – a shadowy organisation backed by the United States and Israel – said it would open two aid distribution centres in the war-torn territory on Thursday after a full-day closure on Wednesday. It said in a post on Facebook that it would reopen two centres in the Rafah area of southern Gaza. It did not say when aid distribution would resume. The GHF earlier said its sites in Gaza would not open at their usual time due to maintenance and repair work and strongly urged aid seekers travelling to its locations to 'follow the routes' set by the Israeli military to 'ensure safe passage'. The Israeli military warned Palestinians on Wednesday not to approach GHF aid distribution sites while 'reorganisation work' was under way, saying that access roads to those locations would be 'considered combat zones'. The suspension of GHF's distribution of food supplies in Gaza comes after Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians seeking aid for a fourth time near a GHF distribution site in Rafah, southern Gaza, early on Tuesday. The Israeli attack killed at least 27 people and injured about 90 more, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has confirmed that it received a 'mass casualty influx of 179 cases' after Sunday's attack, including 21 patients who were 'declared dead upon arrival'. Women and children were among the casualties, the group said.

Pakistan Healthcare Solutions Conference in Doha fosters bilateral collaboration
Tribune News Network Doha The Embassy of Pakistan in Qatar, in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation's (HMC) ITQAN Clinical Simulation and Innovation Centre, successfully hosted the Pakistan Healthcare Solutions Conference on June 2, at the ITQAN Clinical Simulation and Innovation Centre in Doha. The event, organised with the Atlantic International Business Network (AIBN) as the executive partner, aimed to advance a shared vision for healthcare innovation and strengthen Pakistan-Qatar collaboration. The conference was honoured by the presence of Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination of Pakistan, Syed Mustafa Kamal, as the chief guest from Pakistan, and Assistant Minister for Health Affairs, Ministry of Public Health, Qatar, HE Dr. Salih Al Marri, as the chief guest from Qatar. Ali Al Janahi, HMC acting assistant managing director, Dr. Abdulla Ali Al-Ansari, medical advisor to the managing director of HMC, also attended, highlighting the high-level commitment to bilateral healthcare ties. The event brought together key stakeholders from the medical, pharmaceutical, telehealth, academic, and regulatory sectors of both nations. It provided a platform for government officials, healthcare leaders, innovators, and investors to explore opportunities for cross-border partnerships and advancements in healthcare development. The program commenced with inaugural addresses by Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, Javaid I. Sheikh, M.D., M.B.A., and the Executive Director of the ITQAN Clinical Simulation and Innovation Centre, Dr. Abdulla Ahmad. Their remarks underscored the transformative potential of collaborative efforts in strengthening healthcare systems between Pakistan and Qatar. Keynote presentations were delivered by Lt. Gen. Arshad Naseem HI (M), surgeon general of Pakistan, and Prof. Dr. Ambreen Afzal Ehsan, vice president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. These sessions highlighted Pakistan's advancements in healthcare and set the stage for discussions on bilateral cooperation. Two high-level panel discussions enriched the conference. The conference concluded with remarks by Hafiz Muhammad Talha, CEO of AIBN and managing director of Metas Qatar, followed by a closing address by Ambassador of Pakistan to Qatar HE Muhammad Aamer. The ambassador reaffirmed the Embassy's commitment to fostering enduring healthcare partnerships between Pakistan and Qatar.
