Push for Arab cooperation in health sector

TDT | Geneva Joint action among Arab states is important to address shared health priorities, particularly given the ongoing global and regional challenges. This was emphasised by Her Excellency Dr. Jalila bint Al Sayed Jawad Hassan, Minister of Health, as she participated in the 62nd session of the Council of Arab Health Ministers and its Executive Bureau, held in Geneva alongside Arab health ministers. She highlighted the need to invest in capacity building, boost local production of medicines and medical supplies, and reduce reliance on imports. Dr. Jalila also reviewed the regional health initiative launched through the 'Bahrain Declaration,' endorsed by Arab leaders during the 33rd Arab Summit hosted by Bahrain in May. The initiative aims to strengthen healthcare quality and resilience across Arab health systems through partnerships and sustainable strategies.

Qatar's delegation to the meetings was led by Minister of Public Health His Excellency Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud. The meetings of the Council of Arab Health Ministers reviewed several important topics, most notably the state of healthcare in the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan, as well as the Arab Committee for Health Emergency Preparedness and Response, and the Arab Health Economics Strategy (2025-2030), which aims to promote the use of health economics approaches to address key health priorities.

Minister of Health Affirms Iraq's Commitment to the "Help Gaza" Campaign Launched by the Prime Minister

Health Minister Saleh al-Hasnawi affirmed Iraq's commitment to the "Help Gaza" campaign launched by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on Monday, and the readiness of Iraqi health institutions to provide the necessary support. The ministry said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "Health Minister Saleh al-Hasnawi chaired the 62nd session of the Council of Arab Health Ministers, held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, on the sidelines of the 78th World Health Assembly, in the presence of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Abdul Karim Hashim Mustafa." The statement added, "The Minister began his speech by thanking the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Chairman of the Executive Office of the Council of Arab Health Ministers, for his efforts during the previous session. He praised the role of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, represented by Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, in the success of this session. He also called for strengthening Arab coordination to advance health systems and confront common challenges." "Al-Hasnawi highlighted the humanitarian situation in Gaza Strip, noting the recent martyrdom of more than 1,900 people, bringing the total number to more than 51,000, most of whom are women and children, and the near-total collapse of the health system." According to the statement, the Minister of Health called for "intensifying urgent medical support to the Strip," stressing "Iraq's commitment to the "Help Gaza" campaign launched by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, and the readiness of Iraqi health institutions to provide the necessary support." "Al-Hasnawi appreciated the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan's hosting of the meeting of the Technical Committee on Medical Tourism, the State of Qatar's hosting of the meeting of the Arab Authority for Blood Transfusion Services and the 14th Conference on Blood Transfusion Medicine, and the State of Kuwait's readiness to host the 15th Arab Blood Transfusion Conference in 2026." He added that "the Council discussed support for the Arab Committee for Emergency Preparedness and Response, praising the role of the Arab Council for Health Specializations in preparing specialized courses. They also discussed the issue of combating narcotics and psychotropic substances, developing awareness programs, and emphasizing the activation of the visiting physician system to exchange expertise between Arab countries." "The Council commended the efforts of the Minister of Health in managing the current session, which was characterized by high professionalism and effective presentation of priority health issues. The Council also thanked Iraq for the excellent organization and management of the Council of Arab Ministers of Health, held in Baghdad, and for the diligent and serious follow-up on the implementation of its decisions. Minister Al-Hasnawi expressed Iraq's support for the draft agreement for the Arab Drug Agency, appreciating the efforts of the Arab Republic of Egypt in its preparation."

Arab League organises 16th Meeting of Technical Advisory Committee of Council of Arab Health Ministers

Mohamed Mandour The General Secretariat is convening the 16th Meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee of the Council of Arab Health Ministers on 28–29 April at the headquarters of the League of Arab States. The meeting was held in preparation for the 62nd Ordinary Session of the Council of Arab Health Ministers and its Executive Office, scheduled to take place in Geneva on 18–19 May in conjunction with the 78th Session of the World Health Assembly. Ambassador Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Social Affairs Sector, affirmed that the Health and Humanitarian Aid Department of the Technical Secretariat would review several critical health issues. Foremost among these are the health conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan, particularly in light of the unprecedented humanitarian and health crisis affecting the Gaza Strip and its healthcare services. The agenda further includes deliberations on sustaining health and humanitarian support for the Palestinian people in Gaza, as well as examining the health and humanitarian situation in the Union of the Comoros. Additionally, the Committee will address and follow up on a number of priority health topics, including: the development of medical and hospital tourism within the Arab region; the oversight of activities and programmes of the Arab Authority for Blood Transfusion Services and the Arab Drug Agency (WAAD); the recommendations of the Arab Health Committee for Emergency Preparedness and Response; the Arab guiding strategy to promote the application of health economics approaches to address major health priorities for the period 2025–2030; collective Arab efforts to combat drug abuse; as well as the proposed frameworks for physician visitation exchanges and training programmes among Arab countries. He further noted that the draft unified statement of the Council of Arab Health Ministers, intended for presentation at the 78th Session of the World Health Assembly, will be reviewed. The statement is scheduled to be delivered by the Minister of Health and Community Protection of the United Arab Emirates. Moreover, the meeting will ratify the winners of the 2025 Arab Doctor Award and consider financial matters related to the Arab Fund for Health Development.
