Penang CM instructs review of 5% housing discount
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has instructed state housing committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo to review the 5% housing discount for first-time homebuyers among the Indian Muslim community.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said he has instructed Sundarajoo to review the policy with developers to expand the discount to all buyers, making it more inclusive and beneficial to all segments of society in line with the principle of social justice.
"Some of the views received suggested that such a discount should also be offered to all buyers to revitalise the property sector, especially in relation to the sale of unsold property units," he said in a statement on Sunday (June 8).
Chow stated that the state executive council will also examine the matter and make an appropriate decision in the interest of all parties.
On Thursday (June 5), Sundarajoo announced that from June 1 this year until May 31 next year, developers would be encouraged to offer IndianMuslims who are first-time homebuyers a 5% discount under the Madani Home Ownership Campaign.
He added that the discount excludes bumiputra quota units and does not affect existing housing policies.
However, Penang DAP chairman Steven Sim, in a statement on Saturday (June 7), announced that Chow had agreed to suspend the discount offer pending a review by the state executive council, emphasising the importance of upholding social justice and ensuring every Malaysian's right to own a home.
The initial policy announced by the state government earlier had been critised by MCA who described the move as racially divisive.
State MCA secretary Yeoh Chin Kah questioned why the Penang government could not base its housing policy on economic status rather than race and religion, expressing confusion that DAP, a party advocating for a 'Malaysian Malaysia', would introduce such a racially framed initiative.
"The people of Penang cannot accept this policy and condemn it for dividing the races,' he said.
He also said by offering the privilege only to Indian Muslims, Yeoh questioned whether it amounted to a new form of racial quota.
'Don't low-income groups who are not Indian Muslims also need assistance? Shouldn't struggling families be treated equally and helped regardless of background?' he added.

Don't make accusations without basis, Dr Wee tells Armizan
KUALA LUMPUR: Amendments to the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Act 2021 (Act 122) was never about regulating the use of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. The MCA President, who referred to the 2021 parliamentary Hansards, said the amendments only gave wider enforcement powers to Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry officers. He said the amendments were debated by numerous MPs before it was passed in Parliament in 2021. "Not a single MP mentioned the permit for three subsidised LPG gas cylinders and the use of commercial LPG for restaurants," Dr Wee said in a video posted on social media on Sunday (June 8). He said when then-domestic trade and cost of living minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi gave a Parliament reply in March 2022, he never mentioned regulations about subsidised gas cylinders. "Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, you were not at the Dewan Rakyat then but you could have checked the Hansard – do your homework before accusing me," he said. Armizan, who is Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, had claimed that the law where eateries are required to use 14kg commercial LPG cylinders, was passed when Dr Wee was part of the Cabinet in 2021. "Maybe the regulations on the use of gas in subsidised gas cylinders not exceeding 42kg was an internal ministerial order, or it could be an instruction from the administration," he said. Dr Wee added that the law was never enforced until the first Pakatan Harapan government in 2019. "During early 2019, the domestic trade and consumer affairs minister issued orders making it compulsory for restaurants, coffee shops and hawkers to use commercial LPG. "But Chong Chieng Jen, who was the deputy minister then, announced a postponement of that policy following concerns food prices may go up. "And now, they are trying to enforce it again under the Madani government in 2025," he said. Dr Wee also demanded an apology from Armizan. "You should apologise to me for your carelessness," he said, adding he was acting as "the spokesman of the people". On Thursday (June 5), Armizan said small and micro-scale food and beverage operators would be exempt from enforcement under the Ops Gasak. Ops Gasak, which began on May 1 until Oct 31, is meant to curb illegal activities such as decanting (transferring gas from subsidised LPG cylinders to non-subsidised ones), smuggling and the misuse of subsidised LPG by medium and large-scale industrial sectors. Dr Wee said Ops Gasak should have focused on large-scale operations and at borders – not petty traders and hawkers. The Ayer Hitam MP also said consumers would ultimately bear the cost of eateries using LPG for commercial use, which costs 170% more than subsidised gas for domestic purposes.

DAP demands AG justify ‘no further action' ruling in Teoh Beng Hock case, backs judicial review
KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — DAP today called on Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar to explain in detail his decision to classify Teoh Beng Hock's death as requiring no further action (NFA). In a joint statement issued by DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo and secretary-general Loke Siew Fook, the party said the Attorney General must justify why he believes there is insufficient evidence to prosecute anyone for Teoh's death. 'The Attorney General and no one else has the discretion to prosecute under the Constitution. He must explain why he is unable to do so in this case particularly in light of the decisions of the Court of Appeal and civil proceedings in the High Court,' the statement said, as published on the DAP's official Facebook page. On May 21, the Attorney General classified the case as NFA after receiving investigation papers from the police, and on May 30, issued a letter to the family's lawyers stating that there was not enough evidence to support criminal prosecution. The party said it had consistently pushed for accountability since Teoh's death in 2009 and had formed a legal team that initiated an inquest to determine the cause of death. The inquest found bruises on Teoh's neck, but on January 5, 2011, the coroner returned an open verdict. DAP then challenged the finding in the High Court, which upheld the coroner's decision, prompting an appeal to the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal overturned the earlier findings, concluding that Teoh's death was caused by 'an unlawful act or acts of persons unknown, inclusive of MACC officers who were involved in the arrest and investigation of the deceased.' DAP also supported the family in a civil suit that led to a government admission of liability for negligence and a RM600,000 compensation award with RM60,000 in costs. The party argued that both the Court of Appeal and civil court decisions provided grounds for renewed police investigations to identify those responsible. DAP said it supports the family's intention to challenge the NFA decision through a judicial review. 'We support this action and also call upon the Attorney General to review his decision and push ahead with charges against those responsible for Teoh Beng Hock's death without further delay,' the party said.

NFA in Teoh Beng Hock case: DAP seeks clarification from A-G
KUALA LUMPUR: DAP has called on Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar to provide a detailed explanation for his decision not to pursue criminal charges in the case involving the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock. In a joint statement issued by DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo and secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook, the party expressed disappointment over the Attorney-General's decision to classify the case as "no further action" (NFA), despite previous court rulings that pointed to foul play. "The Attorney-General must explain why he believes there is insufficient evidence to prosecute anyone for Teoh Beng Hock's death, especially in light of the findings of the Court of Appeal and civil proceedings," the statement read. According to DAP, the case was referred to the Attorney-General by police on May 21 and was subsequently classified as NFA. A letter dated May 30 was later sent to the family's legal representatives, stating that the investigations did not uncover sufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution. Teoh, who was a political aide to a Selangor state executive councillor, died in 2009 while in the custody of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). "DAP has been consistently calling for accountability in the case. "The party previously assembled a legal team that initiated an inquest into Teoh's death, which revealed bruising on his neck. "However, the 2011 Coroner's Court returned an open verdict." Subsequent legal challenges saw the Court of Appeal overturn the Coroner's decision, concluding in 2014 that Teoh's death resulted from "an unlawful act or acts of persons unknown, inclusive of MACC officers who were involved in the arrest and investigation." In a related civil suit, the government and MACC admitted liability for negligence, resulting in a RM600,000 settlement to Teoh's family, along with RM60,000 in costs. "These court decisions form a solid basis for further investigation to identify those responsible for Teoh Beng Hock's death. "Whilst the duty to investigate the case and to identify those responsible lies with the police, it is for the Attorney-General to decide his next step based on that investigation," the statement added. The party also voiced its support for the family's reported move to challenge the NFA decision via a judicial review. "We call upon the Attorney-General to reconsider his decision and move forward with pressing charges against those responsible, without further delay."
