Newcastle preview: Coyle optimistic about Lady Talea's prospects

Jason Coyle walked away more than happy with Lady Talea's second place at Newcastle last start and expects her to be more than competitive again when she returns this weekend.
The three-year-old tracked the leader from her inside gate before peeling out on the turn and while she couldn't hold out the fast finishing Southern Heiress, she did put nearly three lengths on the rest of the field.
It was a big improvement from Lady Talea who had finished down the order in the her first two starts in the Listed Lonhro Plate at Randwick in February and Two-Year-Old Handicap on the Kensington.
'I think we can put a line through her first two runs,' said Coyle.
'She probably shouldn't have gone to the Stakes on debut but she was in (work) at the right time and she was healthy so we gave her a go.

'It was a learning experience for her then she went out.
'On the Kenso first-up this time, she had trialled so well and I think Andrew (Adkins) may have got trigger happy and set her alight from the start.
'She had nothing in the tank when asked to quicken and just got lost.
'I thought it was a positive step forward from her last start. From a good draw it all worked out well.
'She found one much better on the day but she had the rest of the field well and truly covered.
The daughter of Anders returns to the Steel City in the Maiden Plate (900m) with Jess Taylor aboard.
'She has always shown that little bit of ability and I feel the family handle a wet surface,' Coyle said.
'I think the more times we can get her to the races and things go right, the better she will be.'
Coyle was also thrilled by the debut run of Smart Cry at Hawkesbury on June 26 despite beating just one home behind Efharisto.
After settling last, the daughter of Vino Rossa made up ground late in the 1000m event.
'She was super impressive. I really thought she was outstanding,' he said.
'I genuinely feel she is a seven furlong (1400m) to mile horse and her pedigree says even further.
'At this stage she is racing like a sprinter. I think 1200m would have been perfect the way she closed off.'
The four-year-old gets her chance over the 1200m where she contests the Midway 4YO&Up Maiden Handicap where she has drawn out in gate 11.
'Being a heavy track, it may be okay sitting a touch wide at Newcastle and sliding home,' he said.
'If we go ahead, she is definitely going to improve of her first run.'
Coyle expects stable stalwart Chateaux Park to run a much improved race second-up in the Benchmark 68 Handicap (1600m).
The nine-year-old dwelt at the start and came out two lengths behind the field when last to Hooligan Tommy at Gosford two weeks ago.
'Mitchell (Bell) got off and said they couldn't have run the race any worse for him with a horse taking off mid-race,' said Coyle.
'Being first-up, trying to sustain a four furlong gallop had his cooked. He was done.
'It was a shame because he had trialled nicely leading into it.
'He probably would have finished closer if it was just a normal run mile.
'It will be a heavy track which he handles and he should improve out of sight second-up.'
Coyle also expects Bluff 'N' Bluster and Catch The Glory to run well at Rosehill.
'I'm not going to the races bullish but I'm confident they are all in suitable races and will run well,' he said.

Chris Waller mare Autumn Glow sparks interest for The Everest as stars trial for spring campaign at Randwick and Gosford

Epsom Handicap favourite Autumn Glow has vaulted into The Everest conversation after another impressive barrier trial effort at Randwick on Thursday. Chris Waller's unbeaten mare Autumn Glow was eased back to last early in her 850m heat before being taken wide on the turn by jockey James McDonald where she ran on strongly without being put under any pressure for a close third to Just Feelin' Lucky. Autumn Glow, winner of her four starts, is at the top of early TAB betting at $3.20 for the Group 1 $1.5m TAB Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick on October 4. But part-owner John Messara revealed he has had interest from slot-holders to set his brilliant mare for the $20m The TAB Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on October 18. She is currently rated at $15 in early Everest betting behind Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising at $1.80. 'It's an open question which races Autumn Glow will be aimed at this spring carnival,'' Messara said. 'We have had approaches from some Everest slot-holders but it's all conjecture at the moment. 'She will resume racing at Randwick on August 23 in either the Show County Quality (1200m) or the Toy Show Quality (1100m) and we want to see how she goes that day before deciding on her program. 'Chris's preference is the Epsom Handicap but it will depend on what she does first-up. If she shows us she is sprinting really well then obviously we will have a look at the Everest.'' JUST FEELIN' LUCKY prevails in Trial 3 at Randwick, another with some serious star power this morning. 🥈 - BELLAZAINE 🥉 - AUTUMN GLOW LINEBACKER also doing his best work late ðŸ'€ — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 7, 2025 Autumn Glow was just one of a galaxy of equine stars competing in barrier trials at Randwick and Gosford on Thursday morning. It was a case of where to look as some of the best horses in training contested crucial trials within minutes of each other. Waller's champion mare Via Sistina and her outstanding stablemate Fangirl were the headline acts in the opening Randwick heat over 1000m, finishing second and fourth respectively behind Vauban. The first on a stacked morning of Trials at Randwick goes the way of VAUBAN, with VIA SISTINA finishing off her work nicely down the outside. FANGIRL also doing her best work late ðŸ'€ — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 7, 2025 • Pride keen on keeping Plan A with Private Eye Vauban, the former Irish stayer who seems reinvigorated since joining the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable, got his Melbourne Cup campaign off to an impressive start winning the heat by a short neck from Via Sistina with another Waller runner, New Zealand Derby placegetter Golden Century looking sharp finishing a half length away third. Horse of the Year-elect Via Sistina was kept deliberately wide in her trial before moving into the contest under a hold from McDonald to finish an eye-catching second. MANAAL looking super impressive taking out Trial 4 at Randwick this morning. WODETON, CLEAN ENERGY & STEFI MAGNETICA all finishing together behind the winner ðŸ'€ — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 7, 2025 Fangirl, Waller's $10m earner, was in Via Sistina's slipstream for most of the trial and also closed nicely late to finish fourth, beaten just over two lengths. Via Sistina and Fangirl are set to resume in the first Group 1 race of the new season, the $1m Winx Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on August 23. In early TAB betting, Via Sistina is the $2.80 favourite to go back-to-back in the Winx Stakes while Fangirl, the 2023 winner, is at $4. PALMETTO with a strong showing in Trial 2 at Randwick this morning with some eye catchers behind 🥈 - PERICLES 🥉 - LADY SHENANDOAH AELIANA and ZARDOZI behind the placings ðŸ'€ — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 7, 2025 • Bulked-up Private Harry to unveil new look in Everest In the next 1000m course proper heat, the Waller-trained duo of Lady Shenandoah (third) and Aeliana (fourth) continued their build-up to the Winx Stakes with pleasing trials behind Palmetto. Linebacker was desperate to go faster when fourth in Just Feelin' Lucky's trial while heat 4 over 850m was a competitive trial won by Manaal from Wodeton, Clean Energy and Stefi Magnetica in a tight finish where less than a length separated the first four placegetters. Trainer Ciaron Maher scratched his four Group 1 winners, Jimmysstar, Gringotts, Another Wil and Light Infantry Man from the Randwick trials and ran them at Gosford instead. Plenty of interest in Trial 6 at Gosford this morning! âï¸JIMMYSSTAR âï¸ @tabcomau 's slot runner for this year's TAB Everest, has kicked off his campaign with a strong showing, hitting the line well out wide to finish 3rd ðŸ'€ @cmaherracing — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 7, 2025 The Everest hopeful Jimmysstar, ridden by Louise Day, looked in cruise control finishing two lengths away in third place behind King's Duty over 800m. Leading Melbourne jockey Jamie Melham made the trip to Gosford to partner Gringotts to an impressive 1000m heat win, and she was also in the saddle when Another Wil ran a close second to Mogul Monarch, and for Light Infantry Man's third to promising three-year-old Hidden Motive.

Brad Waters' The Valley Saturday tips, race-by-race analysis

Form expert Brad Waters analyses Saturday's nine-race card at The Valley, presenting his best bets, value selection, quaddie picks and race-by-race commentary. BEST BET MORNINGTON GLORY (Race 4, No. 1) Classy sprinter that trialled impressively leading up to this. He'll track the speed and should be too strong late. BEST VALUE Loves The Valley and not disgraced in much harder company when resuming at Caulfield. She has a good second-up record so should improve. EARLY QUADDIE 2, 3, 6, 7, 11/1, 6, 8/1, 3/2, 3, 5, 6 $100 flexi for 83 per cent QUADDIE Race 6: 1, 4, 11 Race 7: 2, 5, 9 Race 8: 2, 5, 6, 7, 19 Race 9: 1, 2, 4, 10 $100 flexi for 55.5 per cent MULTI Race 4 No. 1 Mornington Glory (win) Race 6 No. 11 Esha (win) Race 8 No. 2 Reset The Jazz (place) Current odds $35.87 Expecting a track just into the soft range on Saturday with no rain forecast. NAVY KING (6) has been sound at his last two runs and impressed over this trip as a three-year-old. CATANI GARDENS (1) gave too much start at Flemington and could improve with blinkers on. RISE TO IT (2) drops a couple of grades for this assignment while FOIRE DE TRONE (11) steps up in class but looks a promising stayer. SUGGESTED BET: Navy King each-way. KARBURAN (7) raced on the pace and gave a good sight at Sandown and will be fitter for three runs this time in. I AM THE EMPIRE (3) fought on well to score at Sandown and should be hard to get past again. FLAMIN' ROMANS (2) is on the fresh side for this but could be ready for this trip now. JENNIVAMOOSE (11) chased well at Sandown and has won at The Valley. SUGGESTED BET: Karburan each-way. TAKEKO (6) led and was only grabbed late when resuming but looks to have the perfect run at The Valley and 1200m is her best distance. JENNI THE FOX (1) is a talented mare that should be strong late. ENNA'S DREAM (8) won well at Geelong second-up and could measure up to this. VAIN CHAMPAGNE (10) finished strongly from the rear at Caulfield and could is worth including again. SUGGESTED BET: Takeko to win with a saver on Jenni The Fox. MARKET MOVER: Enna's Dream $4.20 – $3.80. MORNINGTON GLORY (1) is the class horse of the field as a Group 1 winner and his jump out showed he's going well. OAK HILL (3) is a smart sprinter that will be running on well late. BEAST MODE (6) is honest and will be fitter for two runs this time in. MIDWEST (2) is speedy and should be in this for a long way. SUGGESTED BET: Mornington Glory to win. Tricky race but MARTIAL MUSIC (6) could represent a bit of value, stepping up in class after a strong second-up win at Cranbourne. DREAMZEL (5) led and boxed on well to salute at Sandown and has drawn well here. BIG ME (2) is down in grade and is yet to miss a place at The Valley. RATTLE AND BANG (3) did a good job at Sandown and races best at this trip. SUGGESTED BET: Martial Music each-way. Plenty of talent engaged here but ESHA (11) looked a smart filly in the making on debut in SA and has trialled well leading up to this. OYSTER LANE (4) has gone well behind smart types at both runs to date and should be prominent. ANGEL LADDER (12) improved significantly to score second-up and will again be better for that outing. HELLO ROMEO (1) was sound in Sydney and should again have every chance. SUGGESTED BET: Box trifecta 1, 4, 11, 12. MARKET MOVER: Esha $2.25 – $2.10. Getting to The Valley could suit NELLIE LEYLAX (9), which went well from a tough draw at Flemington and meets his rivals on much better weight terms. SAYEDATY SADATY (5) is going well and will again be the hardest to beat. SMOKIN' ROMANS (2) is fresh for this and has the quality to be thereabouts. BERKELEY SQUARE (1) will give a start but will be fitter for two runs in. SUGGESTED BET: Back both Nellie Laylax & Sayedaty Sadaty. RESET THE JAZZ (2) has shown plenty of heart to get home at his last two starts and should again have every chance from barrier three. PRIVATE JUMBO (10) led and wasn't far away at Sandown and has raced well at The Valley. PRINCEOFNOTTINGHAM (6) has steadily improved at his last couple of runs and is unbeaten at The Valley. NANA'S WISH (5) is consistent and drops in grade for this. SUGGESTED BET: Reset The Jazz each-way. Tricky finish to the meeting but APACHE SONG (1) will find this easier than her first-up outing at Group 3 level and she loves The Valley. GREAT MAXIMUS (4) ran on well at Flemington and could settle closer. ELOUYOU (2) has struggled in harder races at his last two but could improve back to The Valley. LUNA CAT (10) was sound at Caulfield and should go well again.
