Farmer Creates 'Tinder' For Dairy Cows
, Senior Journalist, Rurals A Waikato farmer created what he says is essentially Tinder for cows, after a spreadsheet error caused him to lose the breeding data for his herd. Matthew Zonderop, a 50-50 sharemilker, previously used multiple spreadsheets and coding to track his herd, insemination, and make genetic improvements. But after an error in his coding saw his system no longer working, he turned to artificial intelligence and ChatGPT, which he had previously played around with but not in a work capacity. After the AI powered tool fixed the code he uploaded the entire spreadsheet and realised it could do it all for him. He said he hadn't looked back, launching his business Perfect Cow Breeding Solutions at Fieldays earlier this year to help other farmers. It removed the hassle of spreadsheets and helped farmers breed better cows by choosing the right bull. "Basically, it's a matchmaking service for dairy farmers and their cows. "Most cows throughout New Zealand are DNA profiled, and they give specific trait data on cows, so her protein levels, her fat levels, gestation length, live weight, and they are given to us into our herd records. "So each cow has got its own head record and we can extract that data and then analyse it. "It was always available to us, but we really, I suppose, didn't have the tools available to analyse it the way we are now with using AI."

First ‘Climate Citizens' Approved By Nauru In World-First Program
The Republic of Nauru has welcomed its first new citizens under the government's Economic and Climate Resilience Citizenship Program, announced at COP29 late last year. Nauru, ranked the world's fifth most vulnerable nation under the United Nations' Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) for its heightened exposure to economic and environmental shocks, launched the program as a way for conscientious investors to acquire an additional citizenship while contributing to climate adaptation and sustainable development projects in the South Pacific. Program CEO Edward Clark revealed the first approved applicant is a German family of four who recently sold their long-standing family business – a well-known, reputable German company - and are currently living in Dubai. 'They were looking for a second citizenship to provide them with a Plan B given the current global political volatility and chose the Nauru Economic & Climate Resilience Citizenship Program because the contribution was going towards tackling the impacts of climate change on the island,' he explained. Mr Clark, who has an extensive background in international banking, financial crime and compliance, said it took under four months from receiving the application to the granting of citizenship, and that strict due diligence processes were followed. 'This is a fundamental pillar of our program and a safeguard for Nauru's reputation and security,' he said. 'All applicants undergo checks with international law enforcement agencies and are subject to in-depth background verification. Our entire application process is consistent with international best practices. He said only individuals of the highest calibre who can participate in shaping Nauru's future will be granted citizenship. 'The granting of Nauruan citizenship to this family marks a major milestone for the program and provides even more confidence to those who are currently exploring Nauru citizenship by investment.' Nauru is embarking on a long-term project that will reform the nation in the face of economic challenges and climate change, which as well as dealing with issues like food and water security, includes the 'Higher Ground Initiative' - relocating almost the entire population from the coast to higher ground. The new citizens from Germany applied through international migration agents Henley & Partners, who in a statement said the company is, 'incredibly proud to represent the first applicant to be successfully granted citizenship under the Republic of Nauru's Economic and Climate Resilience Citizenship Program. 'For our firm, this goes beyond mobility; this is about directing capital into a Small Island Developing State, which is facing real climate risk. 'This is a clear example of how investment migration, when properly designed and governed, can channel capital toward economic and climate resilience measures and create a more sustainable future,' the statement concluded.

Waikato tourism sector shows growth and resilience, celebrates events funding
At least 22 events in Waikato have also received Government support as part of the recent round of the Regional Events Promotion Fund. 'Events remain a cornerstone of our visitor strategy, a key reason for manuhiri [visitors] to head to the mighty Waikato,' Greenwell said. After Waikato was initially excluded from the first round of the Regional Events Promotion Fund, Hamilton and Waikato Tourism successfully lobbied to be included in round two. 'For Waipa and Waikato district events to secure over $250,000 in funding was a definite win for the individual events, the district and the wider region.' Among the events receiving funding were Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, Fieldays, Equifest, Whangamatā Half Marathon, National Waka Ama Sprint Championships 2026 and Motofest. Upston said last week the controversial Everyone Must Go campaign had been a success, exceeding its target of bringing 6750 additional Australians to New Zealand over autumn. 'With Waikato featuring as part of wider regional storytelling, this campaign supports international recovery by reigniting interest in our unique offerings – particularly our natural landscapes, cultural experiences, and growing food and wine scene.' Greenwell said reintroducing international direct flights from Sydney and Coolangatta to Hamilton had also added 'hype'. 'Hotel developments under way and announced couldn't come soon enough. The final 48 events supported by the fund were completed in April this year. The 'economic impact assessment' revealed the $3.75m fund had generated $220m for communities in the Thermal Explorer regions of Waikato, Rotorua, Taupō and Ruapehu. The events it supported catered for a total audience of 532,468 people, including 249,909 visitors from outside the regions the events were hosted in. 'One of the purposes of the fund was to stimulate domestic visitation so it's a real testament to its success that around half of the people who attended the events it funded came from out of the region,' Greenwell said. Popular funded events included the Middle-earth Half Marathon in Hobbiton, the inaugural ITM Taupō Super400 motorsport event, the New Zealand Blues and BBQ Festival in Rotorua and the Ohakune Blues and Roots Festival. 'Not only has the funding brought some entirely new events to our communities ... but it has also helped build local capability, creating a legacy that will last for decades.'
