Scientific workshop for conservation area in Sabah
Held at the Rainforest Discovery Centre in Sandakan, the gathering perused findings from the expedition to Sungai Pin in September last year. The workshop was also a pioneering public-private initiative to elevate conservation standards in oil palm-managed landscapes.
Over 100 stakeholders, including community representatives, NGOs and government agencies, collaboratively addressed key environmental challenges.
One of the objectives was to formulate a roadmap for Green List certification under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) by 2028, a first for oil palm-associated conservation areas.
The workshop also undertook a comparative analysis of the 2024 scientific findings against baseline data from 2019, revealing measurable ecological trends.
It also integrated community perspectives from local stakeholders and conservation-linked NGOs, while developing a unified framework for biodiversity conservation and landscape management.
The event was graced by Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests (Planning and Management) Indra Sunjoto, representing the department's Chief Conservator Datuk Frederick Kugan, alongside Sawit Kinabalu Group chief sustainability officer Nazlan Mohamad.
The day's agenda included nine cutting-edge research presentations across three thematic sessions and interactive workshops generating actionable conservation strategies.
Plenary discussions were also held, focusing on biodiversity monitoring protocols, threat reduction measures and multi-stakeholder collaboration models
'This workshop marks a transformative approach to conservation in agricultural landscapes,' said Indra Sunjoto. 'By aligning scientific rigour with community engagement, we're setting new benchmarks for sustainable land management.'
The outcomes will support SPnCA's application for IUCN Green List status, making Malaysia's first oil palm company-led conservation area while meeting global standards for a protected area.

Penang To Host Major ASEAN Naval Events With 10 Warships Docking
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Penang will take centre stage in regional maritime defence as the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) hosts three key ASEAN naval events from Aug 15 to 22 under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship 2025. The week-long programme includes the 19th ASEAN Navy Chiefs' Meeting (ANCM), the Third ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise (AMNEX) and the ASEAN Fleet Review (AFR), with activities across George Town and Batu Ferringhi. The ANCM Working Committee deputy chairman Rear Admiral Datuk Mohd Fadzli Kamal Mohd Mohaldin told Bernama that the events will feature ten warships, seven from ASEAN countries and three from RMN, bringing about 1,600 naval personnel to Penang's Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal. He said the programme begins with the arrival of the vessels on Aug 15. It will be followed by the AMNEX Opening Ceremony and its 'Port Phase' on Aug 16, which allows naval officers to finalise plans for the joint sea exercises. The RMN will also host the Naval Engineering Conference (NEC), a scientific forum uniting regional naval engineers to discuss innovations under the theme 'Innovation and Technology Towards Improving Ship Survivability at Sea'. A highlight open to the public is the ASEAN Navies' City Parade (ANCP) on Aug 17 at the Esplanade in Padang Kota Lama, held alongside Penang's Hari Buletin 4.0 event. The parade commemorates the historic 1990 International Royal Fleet Review, which saw 59 warships and over 11,000 naval personnel visit Penang. Visitors will also have the rare opportunity to tour the docked warships at Swettenham Pier, gaining insights into the latest naval technologies. The programme includes the various contingents' parade, local agency display, cultural performances, maritime asset salutes and RMN helicopter flypasts. The 19th ANCM, a high-level meeting of ASEAN naval commanders to strengthen maritime cooperation and trust, will convene on Aug 19 at Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort in Batu Ferringhi. Delegates will then attend the ASEAN Chief Navy (CN) Interaction Programme at Penang Hill on Aug 20. The grand finale, the ASEAN Fleet Review on Aug 21, will see all participating warships sail in formation through the northern strait, a spectacle visible from Butterworth and George Town.

Govt agencies, Madani communities must play active role in flying Jalur Gemilang, says Japen
KOTA BARU: All federal and state government agencies as well as Madani communities across the nation have been urged to take a more proactive role in fostering patriotism by flying the Jalur Gemilang at their premises in conjunction with National Month. Kelantan Information Department (Japen) director Muhd Aswadi Md Nor stated that active involvement is essential to ensuring the message of patriotism reaches the wider public. "As institutions closely connected to the community, government agencies and neighbourhood associations must set an example for residents by decorating their buildings or homes with the Jalur Gemilang to manifest unity and love for the country. "The responsibility of flying the Jalur Gemilang must be shared and embraced by all levels of society," he told Bernama after the flagging off of the 2025 Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) convoy at Politeknik Kota Baru on Monday (Aug 11), officiated by National Kenaf and Tobacco Board chairman Datuk Seri Md Alwi Che Ahmad. The convoy began its journey on Sunday (Aug 10) from Kolej Komuniti Jeli. It then proceeded to Tanah Merah, Pasir Mas, Kota Baru, concluding the ride in Machang before handing over the Jalur Gemilang to the Terengganu KMJG convoy. Plastic pollution awareness in Kinabatangan

KINABATANGAN: Sawit Kinabalu Group (SKG), through its Conservation and Biodiversity Unit (CBU) and in collaboration with the Sabah Forestry Department (SFD), hosted the 2025 World Environment Day (WED) celebration at the Sungai Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA) here. Now in its third local edition, this year's celebration carried the theme 'Ending Plastic Pollution', aiming to enhance environmental awareness and promote biodiversity conservation among SKG staff, local communities, and youth, particularly within the Kinabatangan region. Advertisement The programme included an Environmental Education (EE) session involving 30 schoolchildren from across the district. Facilitated by SKG's CBU and conservation partners, the session provided practical activities to help participants understand ecological issues and the importance of conservation. Aligned with the national Greening Malaysia Campaign under the 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign, the event also featured a tree planting exercise led by the Sabah Forestry Department. This supported reforestation efforts and habitat restoration within the conservation area. Participants included representatives from the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), Danau Girang Field Centre (DGFC), WWF-Malaysia, KOPEL BHD, Sabah Wildlife Department (Kinabatangan), Orang JUGA, and local schools SK Paris 1, SK Batu Puteh, and SK Sentosa Jaya.
