Plastic pollution awareness in Kinabatangan

KINABATANGAN: Sawit Kinabalu Group (SKG), through its Conservation and Biodiversity Unit (CBU) and in collaboration with the Sabah Forestry Department (SFD), hosted the 2025 World Environment Day (WED) celebration at the Sungai Pin Conservation Area (SPnCA) here. Now in its third local edition, this year's celebration carried the theme 'Ending Plastic Pollution', aiming to enhance environmental awareness and promote biodiversity conservation among SKG staff, local communities, and youth, particularly within the Kinabatangan region.
Advertisement The programme included an Environmental Education (EE) session involving 30 schoolchildren from across the district. Facilitated by SKG's CBU and conservation partners, the session provided practical activities to help participants understand ecological issues and the importance of conservation. Aligned with the national Greening Malaysia Campaign under the 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign, the event also featured a tree planting exercise led by the Sabah Forestry Department. This supported reforestation efforts and habitat restoration within the conservation area. Participants included representatives from the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), Danau Girang Field Centre (DGFC), WWF-Malaysia, KOPEL BHD, Sabah Wildlife Department (Kinabatangan), Orang JUGA, and local schools SK Paris 1, SK Batu Puteh, and SK Sentosa Jaya. Community members from Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (KRT) Kg Mengaris, Kg Batu Puteh, and Kg Paris 1, as well as neighbouring plantations and estates, also took part.

Weak sea turtle safely returned to sea in Papar

Three firefighters, assisted by members of the public, used a cloth to carefully lift the turtle before releasing it back into its natural habitat. South Korean tourists trapped in elevator during Kota Kinabalu condo fire

Kota Kinabalu: A group of South Korean tourists experienced a terrifying ordeal when two of them were trapped in an elevator for about an hour during a recent fire at The Shore condominium. One tourist, who was resting on the 19th floor with friends, said they noticed a burning smell and saw ashes floating outside the balcony. Despite these warning signs, the fire alarm did not go off initially. Advertisement Concerned, the group checked the hallway and saw smoke but still heard no emergency bell. Believing the situation was under control, they decided to take the elevator down to the first floor. 'If we had known the fire was serious, we wouldn't have used the elevator,' the tourist told Daily Express. As the elevator descended, the fire alarm finally activated. Moments later, the lift abruptly stopped on the fifth floor, trapping two tourists inside. They remained stuck for about an hour before being rescued by an elevator engineer.
