How travel turns strangers into friends

Hindustan Times6 hours ago
Friends just get you! Some grow up with you, others find their way to you on a road trip, a trek, or while waiting for hostel check-in. Think of Rani (played by Kangana Ranaut) in the movie Queen (2013), who stumbles into a friendship with Vijaylakshmi (Lisa Haydon) while wandering through Paris. Or the trio in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) (played by Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, and Farhan Akhtar), who set off for an adventurous escape and return with deeper bonds and lighter hearts. On Friendship Day today, we speak to people who made lifelong friends through travel — because nothing forges bonds like an adventure away from home. From trail mates to soul sisters
Sharanya Munsi met Dilshad during a snow trek to Brahmatal in 2019. Dilshad, a fashion designer from Goa, was travelling with friends, while Sharanya—a seasoned solo trekker—was used to going it alone.
Sharanya Munsi and Dilshad
'We instantly connected and stayed in touch through Instagram,' Sharanya recalls. A trail-side chat sparked a lasting friendship, deepened by shared pets, K-dramas, and long talks across cities. During COVID, Dilshad even designed Sharanya's bridal face masks. 'She's one of the first people I call when I need help with trip logistics,' Sharanya says. 'We may live far apart, but she's become a comfort and constant outside of my usual circles.'
Travel companions for life
In May 2019, Kanika Yadav from Faridabad travelled to Ladakh with childhood friend Shubham Dhupar, joined by his friend Rahul Grover and colleague Gagandeep Kaur, strangers to her then.
The group calls themselves 'travel companions for life.'
'We were all at crossroads in our lives, and I had never met the other two before,' she recalls. But the mountains had plans of their own. On the trip, Kanika and Rahul bonded and stayed in touch abroad, turning friendship into love; they married in 2023. Meanwhile, Gagandeep and Shubham also grew close and tied the knot this February. 'Despite all the distance and change, one trip gave me my husband, brought my best friend his partner, and made us all each other's chosen people,' says Kanika. Today, the group calls themselves 'travel companions for life.'
A birthday changed everything
Shivani Relia (28), from Delhi, never expected her solo birthday trip to Udaipur in 2021 to lead to a lifelong friendship.
Shivani Relia and Shruti Sharma
She had checked into Zostel early and was waiting in the café when she struck up a conversation with Shruti Sharma (34) from Bangalore, who was also travelling solo. 'We just started talking, and everything clicked,' says Shivani. Four years later, they're still in touch and now planning a trip to the Rann of Kutch. 'Some friendships just feel easy from the start,' Shivani adds.
Work trip turned to family
Pamela Gupta (25) and Tejashee Kashyap (27), both from Delhi, worked in the same industry, but their paths only crossed during a work trip to Egypt. 'It started as the usual work dynamic, but it felt like we had known each other for years. We clicked instantly and began travelling together soon after,' recalls Pamela. Four countries later, their bond has only grown stronger. They've found a rhythm despite their contrasting personalities. 'We may not agree on everything, but that's the beauty of this friendship; we hold space for each other,' Pamela reflects. Today, even their mothers are close friends. She adds, We can't go a day without checking in. We're practically family now.'

Passenger traffic at Coimbatore airport crosses 9.5 lakh in a quarter for first time

Coimbatore: The city airport has recorded a 21% increase in passenger traffic in the first quarter of the current financial year compared to the same period last fiscal. And in a milestone, passenger traffic crossed the 9.5 lakh mark for the first time in a quarter. As per the data released by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the city airport handled 9,51,249 passengers from April 1 to June 30, against 7,83,281 in the corresponding period last fiscal. The growth was primarily driven by a surge in international passenger traffic, which rose by 49% to 80,976 from 54,403 in the first quarter of 2024-25 financial year. Domestic passenger traffic also recorded a 19% increase to 8,70,273 from 7,28,378 during the period under discussion. The AAI noted that this was the highest growth recorded in a quarter for passenger traffic at Coimbatore airport. At 3,089 metric tonnes, freight movement too registered a 19% increase in the first quarter of this fiscal from 2,596 metric tonnes in the same period last financial year. This growth was driven by a 45% increase in international freight, which rose to 575 metric tonnes from 398 metric tonnes. Domestic freight also increased by 14% to 2,513 metric tonnes from 2,198 metric tonnes during the period under discussion. Airport officials attributed the growth in both passenger and freight traffic to increased connectivity. "The launch of international flights by IndiGo to Abu Dhabi and Singapore contributed to the growth in international passenger and freight traffic. On the domestic front, the addition of daily IndiGo flights to Mumbai, Bengaluru and Goa contributed to the rise in the passenger and freight movement," said an official at the city airport. J Sathish, director, Kongu Global Forum, said the first quarter performance of the city airport was impressive and demonstrated its true potential. "It recorded one of the highest growth percentages in the country." He, however, cautioned that the momentum might not continue into the second quarter, owing to curtailment of flight services. "From July 1, Air India flights to Mumbai and Chennai and IndiGo flights to Mumbai and Chennai were discontinued. As a result, passengers now have fewer options, and this situation has led to a drop in passenger numbers in July. Fares have also increased compared to the previous quarter," he said and urged authorities to reinstate these flight services immediately. "Air India Express has strong connectivity to Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad from several airports in South India. However, it is yet to commence operations from Coimbatore," Sathish said. Rang Ghar gets a luminous makeover as Sivasagar launches illumination project

1 2 3 4 Dibrugarh: Centuries-old Rang Ghar, often hailed as Asia's oldest amphitheatre, now stands bathed in luminous splendour as the Sivasagar district administration has successfully completed its ambitious monument illumination project. The initiative, which has transformed the visual landscape of the historic Ahom-era structure, represents a significant step toward preserving and promoting the state's rich cultural heritage. The illumination project has not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the iconic two-storied pavilion but has also sparked renewed public interest in the monument that once served as the royal sports pavilion of the Ahom kings. Built in 1746 during the reign of Swargadeo Pramatta Singha, Rang Ghar stands as a testament to the architectural brilliance and cultural sophistication of the Ahom dynasty. "This illumination project is part of our comprehensive effort to showcase the historical significance of our monuments to both domestic and international tourists. The response from visitors has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing amazement at how the lighting brings out the intricate architectural details of the structure," Sivasagar DC Ayush Garg said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2022 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo The district administration's vision extends beyond the Rang Ghar, with plans already underway to illuminate other significant Ahom-era monuments. The majestic Talatal Ghar, a seven-storied palace complex that served as the military base of the Ahom army, will soon get a similar facelift. The Kareng Ghar, another architectural marvel that functioned as the royal palace, is also slated for illumination, along with the serene Sivasagar Pukhuri (Lake) and the sacred Shiva Dol temple. "These monuments represent our glorious past and the advanced civilisation that flourished in Assam centuries ago. The illumination project will help younger generations connect with their heritage, while attracting tourists who appreciate the grandeur of Ahom architecture," Garg added. The district administration has also undertaken comprehensive programmes focusing on cleanliness and beautification of historical monuments, temples, tourist spots, parks, and other significant sites across the district. These initiatives aim to create a holistic tourism experience that honours the region's cultural legacy while meeting modern visitor expectations. "Our goal is to transform Sivasagar into a premier heritage destination. The illumination of these monuments is just the beginning of our larger vision to preserve and promote our historical treasures," Garg said.
