One of the best pitchers in baseball will be joining New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
Pittsburgh Pirates star Paul Skenes announced his intention to play for Team USA in next year's tournament live on MLB Network on Tuesday.
"This is one thing, as a fan of the game, watching the previous World Baseball Classics, I was like, 'If I ever get the chance to do this, I'm never saying no,' " Skenes said.

After Team USA lost in the championship game to Team Japan in 2023, though, perhaps there is some growing urgency from American players to participate. Notably, Team Japan enjoyed stellar pitching performances from the likes of Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto without incident that year.
So, after Skenes grabbed headlines by agreeing to participate, who might be next?
If Team USA is looking for the best American-born pitchers in the game, then Yankees ace Max Fried should be a standout candidate. Since joining the Yankees this season, the California native leads all of Major League Baseball with a 1.05 ERA across eight starts and he remains undefeated. He's also represented the U.S. before, winning a gold medal for the Team USA Juniors in the 2009 Maccabiah Games.
But there are some factors that may play against Fried joining Skenes next year. For one, he has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career, making just 14 starts in 2023. In the early part of an eight-year, $218 million contract with the Yankees, he might feel some pressure to do everything he can to stay healthy.
There also seems to be a chance Fried could opt to play for Team Israel, with The Jerusalem Post reporting that the team hoped to recruit him for the 2023 tournament.

Nina Kuscsik, pioneer in long-distance running and first woman to win the Boston Marathon, has died
BOSTON (AP) — Nina Kuscsik, who campaigned for women's inclusion in long-distance running and then won the Boston Marathon the first year that they were officially allowed to enter into the race, has died. She was 86. An obituary for the A.L. Jacobsen Funeral Home in Huntington Station, New York, said Kuscsik died June 8 of respiratory failure after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. 'Nina was more than a pioneer, determined women's running advocate, and celebrated icon within the sport. To us, she was a friend who will always be remembered for her kindness, joyful laugh and smile,' the Boston Athletic Association said on Instagram. 'Nina held the distinct honor of winning the 1972 Boston Marathon , and recognized the platform that came with that triumphant moment, inspiring thousands of women to reach their own goals and finish lines in the decades since. The BAA extends heartfelt condolences to Nina's family, friends, and all in the running community who were touched by her grace.' According to the obituary, Kuscsik graduated from high school at 16, studied nursing for two years and received her license at 18 after petitioning to change a New York law that required nurses to be 21. She won state championships in speed skating, roller skating and cycling – all in the same year — before turning to running when her bicycle broke. She ran the Boston Marathon four times from 1968-71 — before women were officially welcomed, a period retroactively recognized as the Pioneer Era — and then won the first official women's race in 1972. She was also the first woman to enter the New York race, in 1970, and was one of the 'Six who Sat' – six women who refused to start the '72 New York City Marathon for 10 minutes to protest an Amateur Athletic Union rule that the women's race had to be separate from the men's. She won that year and the next year as well. She later served on AAU and USA Track and Field committees drafting rules for women's running. Kathrine Switzer, who entered the 1971 Boston Marathon using her initials and became the first woman to official compete, called Kuscsik 'one of our greatest leaders.' 'Nina was not only a champion runner, but was instrumental in the official acceptance of women and distance running because she did years of tough work of changing rules, regulations and submitting medical evidence to prove women's capability,' said Switzer, who started alongside Kuscsik and six other women who met the qualifying time for the the 1972 Boston race. 'Eight of us registered, eight of us showed up, and all eight of us finished,' she said. 'It was a stunning moment — and a blistering hot day — but appropriately enough, Nina won.' In addition to the more than 80 marathons she ran over her lifetime, Kuscsik set the American record for the 50-mile run in 1977 and won the Empire State Building Run-Up three straight years from 1979–81. Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton grounded out in his season debut for the Yankees against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night after missing New York's first 70 games because of inflammation in the tendons of both elbows. Stanton received a standing ovation when he came to the plate with two on and two outs in the first inning. Batting fifth, the designated hitter hit a 101.5 mph grounder to third on the first pitch. He went 3 for 11 with four RBIs in three rehab games last week with Double-A Somerset, an assignment cut short by rainy weather. 'He feels good to go,' manager Aaron Boone said before the game. 'Excited to get the big boy back.' Stanton has not played a full season since 2018, the first year after the Yankees acquired him from the Miami Marlins. Entering Monday, he had missed 364 of 940 games (39%) since the beginning of the 2019 season. The 35-year-old appeared in 114 games last season, hitting .233 with 27 homers and 72 RBIs, then had seven homers in 14 postseason games and was voted the MVP of the AL Championship Series. Stanton said in February that when he played 'the pain was very high in general.' Boone said right-hander Jake Cousins will have Tommy John surgery on Wednesday with Texas Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister, and right-hander JT Brubaker likely will be activated in the next few days after recovering from three broken left ribs sustained when trying to avoid a comebacker off the bat of Tampa Bay's Kameron Misner during an exhibition on Feb. 21. Cousins, a right-hander who turns 31 next month, has been sidelined all season. Boone said ahead of the first workout at spring training that Cousins had a strained right forearm and then the pitcher felt a pec issue after a pair of batting practice sessions last month. Cousins made minor league rehab appearances on June 3 and June 7 for High-A Hudson Valley and felt discomfort. He had a 2.37 ERA in 37 relief appearances last year, striking out 53 and walking 20 in 38 innings. Brubaker was acquired from Pittsburgh in March 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery on April 12, 2023. The 31-year-old right-hander made six minor league appearances from May 18 through Saturday, then got a call on Sunday from his rehab coordinator telling him to report to Yankee Stadium. He'll likely be used at first in long relief. 'Just to be able to step in this clubhouse is amazing. I mean, the history, just everything,' Brubaker said. 'It's an unbelievable experience.
