Close racing thrills crowd at PE Oval Track
There was high drama in the 1660 modified class that started off with 14 competitors, with only seven surviving to get through to the final.
Championship leader Marthinus Muller and second-placed Jason Drake were both eliminated in the second heat when Muller was deemed to be the cause of an accident that sent Drake careening into the wall, severely damaging his car.
This incident opened the door for Francois Engelbrecht to step up and take overall victory, followed by an impressive drive from Kenzo Barnard, who opted to start each heat at the back of the grid and stormed his way through the field to take second place with Jaco Pitout grabbing third.
The entertaining V8 American Saloon class was a thrilling affair with Schoemanspark brothers Pieter and Flip van der Merwe coming from Bloemfontein to join in on the action, along with Jaco Aylward in Alan Booysen's car.
Unfortunately, champion leader Rohan van Vuuren was an early casualty, resulting in Juan Roesstorff capitalising by taking the overall win on the night, as well as the lead in the regional championship.
Pieta de Lange continued his dominance of the 1600 Stock Saloon class with a full house of wins, as did his son Quade in the Development class, with both now enjoying huge leads in their respective championships.
Johnathan van Vuuren continued his fine run of form to take his second overall victory in a row in the Classic 6 class, with his car not missing a beat, and Kiaan Aylward, in the absence of Piet Scheepers, stormed to a full house of wins in the Hot Rod class, while the ever consistent Malcolm Els continued to stamp his authority on the 2.1 Modified class.
In the Heavy Metal class, SA champion Pierre van der Berg suffered clutch failure in the first heat and took no further part in the night's racing that saw Joshua Sletcher triumph over an impressive David Victor with Bonita Kotze in third.

Early B on song at Aldo Scribante Raceway
Hoping to at least finish on the podium at his first home race at Aldo Scribante Raceway, rap-singer Earl Swartz (Early B) went one better with two second places and a maiden win to end the day on the top step of the podium after three exhilarating heats during round five of the Algoa Motorsport Club Regional Championship on Saturday. It was a busy day for Swartz, who spent many hours engaging with the huge legion of fans who had come out to support him. 'The first thing I need to say is thank you to Liqui Moly and the team,' he said. 'The help from everyone and the camaraderie in Super Vee's are the best thing you can experience, where everyone helps everyone. 'I was lucky enough to bring my dad and a few kids from the neighbourhood to watch today, which was super special, and it was a great experience for them.' Another local hero who enjoyed a great day on his home circuit was Joshua Moore, who took his first overall win in the VW Rookie Cup Interprovincial Championship after a hard-fought battle in all three heats. With two second-place finishes and a win in the last heat, Moore now moves into the lead of the championship with two rounds to go. With the cars all identically matched, Moore knew he had to do something special in the third heat if he was to get the win. Starting from the second row of the grid, he pulled off a spectacular overtaking move in the first corner, outbraking the rest of the field. He hugged the apex to get his nose in front and somehow managed to hold it steady to emerge as the leader as they exited turn two and then fought off the pressure from the rest of the pack as they chased him to the line with the top six cars all finishing within seconds of each other. To round off the day of maiden wins, Tiann Coetzer put in a stunning performance in his Opel Tigra to win the odified saloon class to upstage the ever-consistent Deon Slabbert in his immaculately prepared VW Polo. Slabbert did, however, come back strongly to win the Bronscor Ingco 45-minute endurance race by 17 seconds, with Timothy Ball second. Rane Berry was back to his best in his Nissan Skyline and though pushed hard by Angelique Griffin in race one, cruised to overall victory in the Wide Horizon Advance Training Coastal Challenge for historic, classic and retro cars. Five things we learnt from opening round of the Betway Premiership
If the excitement of the opening round of Betway Premiership action at the weekend is anything to go by, then we are in for an interesting season. Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC, who finished in the top three last season, got off to stuttering starts with the Buccaneers and Stellies losing and the Brazilians drawing. Below are five the things we learnt from the opening round of fixtures that provided some edge-of-seat thrills and spills. Chiefs are up and running Kaizer Chiefs started their league campaign with a 2-0 win over Stellenbosch FC in Cape Town despite playing the match without coach Nasreddine Nabi, who is on compassionate leave after his wife was involved in a car accident in Tunisia. Amakhosi did not dominate the determined Stellies, who played for more than 70 minutes with 10 men after defender Siviwe Nkwali was shown red, but there were positive signs of good things to come.
